The right method depends on where you’re streaming, whether you need separate layouts, and whether your computer can handle the extra encoding work. Set up both versions before going live, then check each one on its intended device.
Choose a workflow for your platforms
First decide which destination needs which orientation. A single platform may offer a native dual-format option; if you’re sending different formats to multiple services or need custom scenes, an encoder plugin or hosted studio may be a better fit.
| Workflow | Best fit | Layout approach | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room dual stream | Creators focused on YouTube | Built-in vertical layout options, including crop, fit-to-phone-width, or stacked presentation | Configure before the stream starts. Encoder setups use a second stream key for the vertical output. |
| Twitch Dual Format with OBS and Aitum Vertical | Twitch creators already using OBS | Separate horizontal and vertical canvases | Enhanced Broadcasting is required; check current hardware requirements and encoder load. |
| TikTok LIVE Studio dual layout | Creators using TikTok LIVE Studio | Customizable portrait layout with sources synced between the two layouts | Layouts share sources; some widgets are unavailable in portrait. |
| OBS with Restream Vertical plugin | Creators routing different orientations to multiple services | Custom vertical scene in OBS alongside landscape delivery | Vertical output uses the main OBS audio mixer and inherits encoder parameters, though a separate vertical bitrate can be set. YouTube orientations are separate live events. |
| Restream Studio | Creators who prefer hosted production | Separate portrait and landscape previews with shared overlays and graphics | Restream’s guide lists the feature for Professional plans and above; orientation assignment is fixed for active channels during a stream. |
Platform features, plan access, dashboard labels, and software compatibility can change. Check the current official setup page and your account’s available settings before a broadcast.
Set up YouTube portrait and landscape streaming
YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. The default vertical view is a center crop, but the layout can be adjusted. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical stream. Dual stream cannot be added after the broadcast has started. See YouTube’s instructions for streaming in horizontal and vertical formats for the current interface details.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream and choose the dual-format option before starting it.
- Review the vertical presentation rather than assuming a center crop will retain the subject. Adjust the layout as needed, choosing among the available crop, fit-to-phone-width, or stacked options.
- If you are sending the stream from an encoder, configure the horizontal output and the separate vertical output using the RTMP(S) details and second stream key documented by YouTube.
- Check both feeds and their destinations before starting. Once the stream is live, YouTube does not let you add the vertical output.
Keep important gameplay, faces, captions, and alerts within the visible area of each layout. A composition that looks balanced in 16:9 may cut off essential action in a 9:16 center crop.
Set up Twitch Dual Format with OBS
Twitch announced Dual Format Streaming on June 17, 2026, saying it lets creators stream horizontal and vertical formats at once. Twitch’s announcement says 70% of new viewers were coming to Twitch on mobile; Twitch does not provide the underlying method or an independent source for that figure, so treat it as Twitch’s own statement rather than an independently verified measurement. The announcement says Dual Format is available to all streamers. Twitch’s documented OBS setup uses Aitum Vertical plus Enhanced Broadcasting. Read Twitch’s announcement and Twitch’s Dual Format setup help before configuring your system.

- Check Twitch’s current system requirements and your dashboard’s eligibility for server-side transcoding. Do not assume a particular hardware threshold based on another creator’s setup.
- In OBS, use the documented Aitum Vertical workflow to create a separate vertical canvas while keeping your landscape scene.
- Enable and configure Enhanced Broadcasting as Twitch’s setup requires. Because additional output can increase encoding work, monitor encoder performance and stream health during a test.
- Inspect the vertical presentation on a mobile device, as Twitch recommends, and confirm that overlays, text, and gameplay remain legible in both formats.
Use TikTok LIVE Studio’s dual layout
TikTok LIVE Studio’s dual layout sends portrait and landscape at the same time and syncs sources between layouts. The portrait composition is customizable; landscape can be adjusted using the shared sources. Some widgets, including chatbox and ranking widgets, are removed or unsupported in portrait. TikTok’s article was updated February 11, 2025; consult the TikTok LIVE Studio dual-layout instructions for the current controls.
- Open TikTok LIVE Studio and set up the dual layout before going live.
- Arrange and inspect the portrait composition, then adjust the landscape view using the synced sources.
- Check the portrait layout for unsupported widgets and remove or replace elements that do not appear there.
- Preview both presentations, paying particular attention to text size, important action, and any alerts that need to be visible in each orientation.
Use OBS and Restream for separate destinations or custom layouts
OBS with the Restream Vertical plugin
This workflow is useful when you want a custom vertical scene in OBS and need to route vertical delivery to selected destinations while keeping landscape delivery elsewhere. Restream says the vertical output uses OBS’s main audio mixer and inherits its encoding parameters, although a separate vertical bitrate can be set. For YouTube, Restream describes the two orientations as separate live events. Follow Restream’s OBS guide for its plugin configuration.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Build and inspect the landscape and vertical scenes in OBS, then install and configure the Restream Vertical plugin using Restream’s current instructions.
- Assign the desired destinations to the correct orientation. For YouTube, plan for separate live events rather than assuming one event will contain both versions.
- Check audio in both outputs. The vertical stream uses the main OBS audio mixer, so confirm that the intended sources and levels carry through.
- Set a vertical bitrate if needed, and check the encoding parameters the output inherits from OBS.
- Assign orientations before going live, then test the destination feeds. Restream says orientation must be assigned before the stream starts.
Restream Studio
Restream Studio provides a hosted workflow with separate 9:16 and 16:9 previews and orientation assignment. Its guide lists this feature for Professional plans and above; overlays and graphics are shared between the views, and orientation is fixed for active channels during a stream. See Restream’s Studio guide for the current plan and setup details.
- Confirm your plan includes the feature and choose the orientation for each active channel before starting.
- Review the portrait and landscape previews separately. Since graphics are shared, check how each overlay fits both canvases.
- Start only after confirming destinations, framing, and audio in both previews; active channel orientation cannot be changed mid-stream according to Restream’s guide.
Check both outputs before the broadcast
A dual-format stream is only useful if both versions show the intended action and reach the right viewers. Run a private or test broadcast where available, then inspect each output on the device it is designed for.

- Stream health: Watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, or other warnings, especially when enabling extra output or multitrack encoding.
- Viewer experience: Inspect the vertical stream on a phone and the landscape stream on its intended screen before relying on the setup live.
Troubleshoot common dual-format problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical output is missing on YouTube | Dual stream was not configured before the stream started, or the encoder’s vertical output/key is not set up | End the current setup and configure dual stream before the next start; verify YouTube’s RTMP(S) details and second stream key. |
| Important gameplay or a face is cut off in portrait | The default center crop does not match the source composition | Adjust the platform’s vertical layout or build a dedicated 9:16 scene; preview it on a phone. |
| Some TikTok widgets do not appear in portrait | The widget is unsupported or removed in the portrait layout | Check the portrait layout’s supported elements and use an alternative that is visible there. |
| OBS encoding becomes unstable after enabling dual output | The added output increases system or encoder load | Check OBS and platform stream-health indicators, review current requirements, and reduce workload or simplify scenes if needed. |
| Vertical output has unexpected audio | The workflow shares or inherits the main OBS audio mixer | Check the main mixer’s source routing and levels, then test the vertical feed independently. |
| A destination receives the wrong orientation | Orientation assignment or channel routing was incorrect | Verify the orientation for each destination before going live; some workflows lock the assignment once the stream starts. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a different use case from the dual-format workflows above: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel, but it does not create simultaneous portrait and landscape outputs, and it does not stream from a camera. If your goal is to keep prerecorded content playing on YouTube without leaving a computer running, the setup is upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. Start a free StreamNeo day.
