To reduce latency on an encoder-based YouTube stream, open the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio and choose the lowest-latency mode your event can tolerate: Normal for one-way broadcasts, Low for limited interaction, or Ultra-low for real-time conversation. Lower latency leaves less buffer, so viewers are more likely to encounter buffering. Upload capacity, network stability, encoder health, and the ingestion protocol can also affect delay.
Choose a latency mode that fits the stream
Stream latency is the time between a camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. YouTube’s mode descriptions are approximate, not guarantees for every viewer or stream. The mode is available for encoder-based streams; webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not let you choose a latency mode. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
| Mode | Best fit | YouTube’s stated viewer experience | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | One-way events where immediate audience replies are not important | Highest quality in terms of the lowest amount of viewer buffering | Supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls that do not need an immediate response | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency | More buffering risk than Normal; does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Live conversation and real-time engagement | Most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency | Higher buffering risk; does not support 4K, and ingestion problems affect viewers more. |
In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s settings and select the latency option under the stream’s latency settings. Choose Normal if picture stability matters more than rapid replies, Low for occasional audience interaction, and Ultra-low only when a near-real-time exchange is worth the added buffering risk. Studio labels can change; use the current latency control for the scheduled stream.
Check upload capacity and network stability
Use upload speed, not download speed, to judge whether your connection can carry the stream. YouTube recommends enough upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate and about 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the connection can consume that margin, while congestion or brief disruptions can add delay or interrupt delivery even if the average upload speed looks adequate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a speed test and a stable connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Run an upload speed test from the location and network you will use for the event.
- Compare the available upload bandwidth with the total configured stream bitrate, leaving roughly 20% spare capacity.
- Reduce competing uploads or network use during the broadcast, especially on a shared connection.
- Test at the time and under the conditions you expect to stream; a speed result from a quiet network may not represent peak-use conditions.
A wired connection may be a practical option if available, but a cable alone cannot guarantee lower latency. The relevant goal is a stable connection with sufficient upload headroom.
Match encoder settings to resolution, frame rate, and codec
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually send. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Avoid treating one bitrate as suitable for every format.

Selected YouTube-recommended bitrate examples
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p at 60 fps or 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates for the listed combinations, not guarantees of a particular viewer’s latency. Check the linked table for other resolutions, frame rates, codecs, and any updated recommendations. Low and Ultra-low latency do not support 4K; YouTube’s encoder guidance says 4K streams use Normal latency.
Check the ingestion protocol
If your encoder sends HLS, account for its protocol-level delay. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because HLS delivers video in segments rather than continuously, and Ultra-low latency is disabled with HLS. YouTube supports HLS segment durations from one to four seconds; shorter segments result in lower latency within HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. Do not switch protocols without confirming that your encoder and stream configuration support the intended setup.

Test and monitor before and during the event
- Run a representative test stream. Include the kind of movement and audio your real event will have; a static test image may not reveal encoding or bandwidth problems.
- Preview before going live. Confirm that the image, sound, and selected latency mode behave as expected.
- Watch stream health and encoder messages. Address warnings about ingestion, dropped frames, or connection instability rather than assuming the latency setting alone is the cause.
- Check the viewer experience during the event. Latency can vary with network conditions, so do not interpret YouTube’s approximate mode descriptions as a fixed delay for everyone.
YouTube also provides a guide to creating a live stream with an encoder, including a list of verified encoders. Those encoder products are not made by YouTube.
Troubleshoot high delay or buffering
| Symptom | Likely factor to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers report buffering after you select Low or Ultra-low | The smaller playback buffer leaves less room to absorb network variation. | Try Low or Normal if the interaction does not require the shortest delay; retest with the intended audience experience. |
| Latency remains high despite selecting a low-latency mode | Network congestion, insufficient upload headroom, encoder health, or ingestion issues can add delay independently of the mode. | Measure upload capacity, reduce competing network use, inspect encoder and stream-health messages, and run another representative test. |
| The stream cannot use Ultra-low | The selected setup may use HLS, for which YouTube disables Ultra-low. | Check the ingestion protocol and confirm the encoder supports the alternative you intend to use before changing it. |
| You need 4K but cannot select Low or Ultra-low | YouTube does not support 4K in those modes; its encoder guidance specifies Normal latency for 4K. | Keep 4K with Normal, or decide whether lower resolution is an acceptable trade-off for a more interactive mode. |
| The stream becomes unstable when other devices are active | Shared use may consume upload headroom or cause disruptions. | Limit competing uploads and retest on the actual event network. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube channel rather than interacting with a live camera audience, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
