For most people starting a live stream, OBS Studio is the best RTMP encoder software to evaluate first. It is free, open source, runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and gives you scenes, source mixing, audio filters, plugins, and scripts. That makes it a flexible starting point—not a promise that every computer can smoothly encode every resolution, frame rate, or scene.
For a more guided creator workflow, consider Streamlabs Desktop. For broadcast-style productions that need configurable RTMP outputs or multiple destinations, consider vMix. The right choice depends on your operating system, encoder hardware, production complexity, and the ingest service you plan to use.
What is the best RTMP encoder software for live streaming?
An RTMP encoder takes the audio and video you arrange in your streaming software, encodes it, and sends it to a streaming destination. That destination provides the server URL and a stream key or equivalent credential. There is no universal winner: a one-camera gaming stream and a multi-source production have different needs.
| Software | Best fit | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Broad-use starting point; flexible scenes and sources | Free and open source; available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with scene composition, source mixing, audio filters, plugins, and scripts. OBS Studio |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Creators who prefer a guided setup and creator-oriented features | Its setup guide covers importing OBS scenes and profiles, x264 and NVENC encoding options, and output-resolution trade-offs. Streamlabs setup guide |
| vMix | More configurable production workflows and multiple outputs | The version 29 guide documents custom RTMP server and key entry, quality settings, and up to three simultaneous destinations in relevant FFMPEG configurations. vMix version 29 user guide |
| Wirecast | Another documented RTMP/H.264-compatible option to evaluate | The source available here is Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows guide; do not assume its details describe every current version or platform. Wirecast guides |
OBS is a practical default, but its own system guidance warns that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help find starting settings suited to your hardware. OBS system requirements

How to choose an encoder for your setup
Match the workflow to the production
- Choose OBS if you want a flexible scene-and-source mixer and are comfortable configuring it.
- Consider Streamlabs Desktop if a guided creator workflow, overlays, and related creator features are important to you. Its guidance is vendor advice, not an independent performance benchmark.
- Consider vMix if your production needs custom RTMP details, provider presets, configurable quality, or multiple outputs. Its version 29 documentation describes up to three simultaneous destinations for relevant FFMPEG configurations; confirm that the specific workflow you need is supported.
- Consider Wirecast as another compatible option, while checking the current guide for your operating system and edition; the cited manual is specifically for Wirecast 16 on Windows.
Check your computer and encoder hardware
Software encoding with x264 uses the CPU. Hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox can shift encoding work away from the CPU, but performance and image quality depend on hardware generation and settings. OBS notes that earlier hardware encoder generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s veryfast preset. Hardware encoding is not automatically better-looking; test the available options on your own system. OBS hardware encoding
Streamlabs recommends NVENC New for users with an NVIDIA GPU and suggests starting with its Quality preset before adjusting. It also cautions that higher output resolution can substantially increase system resource use. These are Streamlabs recommendations, not a universal benchmark. Streamlabs encoding guidance

Compare cost and platform fit before committing
OBS is free and open source. Current pricing and licensing terms for commercial options are not established here, so check each vendor’s official pricing page before choosing. Also verify operating-system support, available encoder hardware and drivers, and whether your destination accepts RTMP or RTMPS. Mux notes that RTMPS offers a higher level of security but is compatible with fewer streaming applications; follow your destination’s current instructions rather than copying a generic endpoint. How to enter an RTMP URL and stream key
The exact menu names vary by encoder and destination. In general, you copy the ingest details from the destination’s live-stream setup and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow asks for its Live server URL and stream key, and also directs you to connect your audio and video equipment in the encoder. YouTube: Go live with an encoder

- Open the destination’s live setup. Find its current server URL and stream key or equivalent credential. Do not use an endpoint copied from an unrelated platform.
- Open your encoder’s streaming settings. Choose the service or provider preset if it matches your destination. Otherwise, choose the custom RTMP option where available and enter the server URL and stream key in their respective fields.
- Connect and check your production sources. Add the camera, game capture or other video source, and audio devices in your encoder. Check that the intended scene and audio routing are active before connecting.
- Set an output your machine and destination can sustain. Confirm resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings against the destination’s current requirements. The appropriate limits can vary by platform and stream type; do not treat a generic setting as universal.
- Test privately or unlisted before a public event. Confirm the destination receives both picture and sound, and that the stream remains stable for a meaningful test. Correct the server details, key, sources, or encoding settings if it does not.
A stream key is a secret credential used to authenticate a stream. Mux describes it as the secret used to authenticate an RTMP stream. Keep it out of screenshots, shared notes, and public examples; if it is exposed, replace or rotate it using the destination’s controls. Mux RTMP guide
Choose settings without overloading your computer or connection
Resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity
Higher output resolution can use substantially more system resources, and a complex scene with multiple sources can be harder to encode than a simple one. Start with settings appropriate to the destination and your hardware, then test with the actual scenes and sources you will use. If the encoder struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or test a different encoder option rather than assuming the software itself is incompatible.

Bitrate and upload headroom
Your upload connection must reliably carry the stream bitrate plus room for network variation and other traffic. Streamlabs’ requirements article, last updated in 2026, gives “3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms.” This is a Streamlabs guideline, not a universal minimum; the destination, bitrate, overhead, and reliability of your connection all matter. Ethernet can avoid some instability associated with wireless connections. Streamlabs system requirements
Encoder choice and drivers
Compare software encoding and any supported hardware encoder at the settings you intend to use. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but results depend on the particular encoder generation and configuration. Keep graphics drivers current where relevant, and use your encoder’s configuration guidance as a starting point, not as proof that your system will sustain the output.

Common RTMP streaming problems and fixes
- The destination does not connect: Recheck the exact server URL and stream key in the destination and encoder. Confirm that you selected the correct service or custom RTMP mode and that the application supports the required RTMP or RTMPS endpoint.
- The stream connects but shows no video or sound: Check the active scene, capture source, camera selection, microphone or desktop-audio source, and mute states. The encoder can only send the sources and routing configured in it.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and test another supported encoder. Consider a hardware encoder if available, while checking image quality as well as CPU load.
- The stream buffers or becomes unstable: Check upload reliability and competing network traffic, use a wired connection when practical, and choose a bitrate that leaves headroom. Verify the destination’s current limits rather than relying on a general rule of thumb.
- RTMPS is unavailable in the encoder: Some applications support fewer RTMPS endpoints than RTMP ones. Check for an updated application or use the destination’s documented compatible workflow; do not silently substitute a different service’s URL.
Keep a YouTube channel live around the clock
