What Is a Video CDN and How Does It Work?

A video content delivery network (CDN) helps deliver video to viewers by caching copies of video files or segments at network locations closer to them. A video player requests a manifest and then the media segments it lists; the CDN serves fresh cached responses when available and fetches misses from the configured origin. A CDN distributes prepared video—it does not, by itself, encode or package it.

What a video CDN does—and what it does not

A video CDN is a delivery layer between a video origin and viewers. It routes HTTP requests and can keep cacheable responses at edge locations. When a viewer requests an object already cached and still fresh, the CDN can return it without fetching it from the origin. When the object is missing, expired, uncacheable, or addressed with a different cache key, the CDN may need to fetch it from the origin or an intermediate cache.

That distinction matters: a CDN can reduce repeated origin work and bring delivery closer to viewers, but it does not inherently create the video, compress it, choose its resolution, or guarantee a particular playback quality. Encoding, packaging, player behavior, network conditions, and CDN delivery are separate parts of the workflow.

How video delivery travels from origin to player

  1. Encode and package the video. An encoder compresses the source into one or more renditions. A packager creates a manifest and media segments in a format such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or CMAF. In video on demand (VOD), those prepared assets can remain stored for later playback. For live video, ingest, encoding, packaging, and manifest updates continue as the event proceeds.
  2. Make the assets available at an origin. The origin serves the manifests and segments. It might be object storage, a media packaging service, or another HTTP server. CDN configuration can route different hosts or paths to different origins and apply different policies.
  3. The player requests a manifest. The manifest describes available media and how the player can request it. Depending on the format, it can describe renditions and the sequence of segments. The player then requests the segments needed for playback.
  4. The CDN routes each request. An edge router applies configured routing and cache rules. The cache key—the values used to decide whether requests refer to the same cached object—and the response’s freshness determine whether a usable copy is available.
  5. A cache hit is served; a miss is filled. On a fresh cache hit, the CDN returns the object from cache. On a miss, it fetches from the origin, or an intermediate shield cache if configured, returns the result to the viewer, and may retain it under its cache rules. Layered caches, origin shielding, and request collapsing can reduce repeated origin work in some systems. Google Cloud documents these concepts for Media CDN; topology and behavior vary by provider (Google Cloud Media CDN overview; Media CDN origins).
  6. The player adapts playback. The player can select among available renditions and use segment information to respond to changing bandwidth or device conditions. The CDN delivers the requested assets; it does not itself make the player’s quality decision.

Why video uses manifests and segments

Many streaming workflows do not deliver one complete video file in a single transfer. The manifest tells the player what to request and in what order, while the segments carry media such as audio, video, and captions. Short, separately requested pieces make it possible for a player to begin playback before downloading the entire program and to request different renditions as conditions change.

HLS, MPEG-DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF are among the package formats identified in AWS CloudFront documentation. Which formats and combinations work depends on the packaging workflow, CDN, player, and target devices. AWS documents CloudFront delivery for VOD and live video from an HTTP origin, including workflows using AWS Media Services (AWS video streaming with CloudFront).

What changes between VOD and live delivery

Video on demand

VOD assets are generally prepared and stored before a viewer presses play. Popular segments may be requested repeatedly and can be useful candidates for caching, subject to freshness, authorization, and cache-key rules.

Live video

Live workflows continuously produce new media segments and update manifests. Cache policies must balance reuse with serving current information: a response that remains cached too long can be stale, while overly restrictive caching can increase origin requests. Low latency depends on the ingest, encoding, packaging, segment or chunk behavior, and player as well as the CDN’s network proximity.

Some low-latency HLS workflows use CMAF and open-ended byte-range requests while an object is still being written. Google Media CDN documents this pattern, but it requires an origin capable of returning data before the object is complete; some object stores only serve an object once writing finishes. Support is not universal across CDNs, origins, or workflows (Google Cloud Media CDN caching behavior).

What affects cache hits and origin load

  • Freshness rules: Cache-control behavior and CDN policy determine how long a response can be reused. Live manifests and newly generated segments need policies that preserve timeliness.
  • Cache keys: If requests that could share an object are treated as different keys—for example, because of configured query-string or header handling—the CDN may store or fetch separate copies. Key design must also preserve any distinctions needed for correct delivery or access control.
  • Origin response behavior: Headers, support for byte ranges, and the origin’s ability to serve partial or still-growing objects influence whether a workflow behaves as intended.
  • Audience geography and popularity: Viewer distribution and how often the same assets are requested affect where copies are useful and how much work remains at the origin.
  • Misses and uncacheable responses: A first request, an expired object, a unique key, or a response that cannot be cached still requires a fetch through the configured delivery path.

Google Cloud says that, based on observed real-world workloads at scale, more than 95% of Media CDN cache fill uses a dedicated long-tail cache node within the region. This is a Google-reported observation about Media CDN workloads, not an industry-wide cache-hit or origin-offload guarantee (Google Media CDN origins documentation).

How to choose a video CDN

There is no universally best CDN based on a provider label or a single performance claim. Start with the workload and the origin, packaging, players, and operations already in use. Google positions Media CDN for high-throughput uses such as streaming video and large downloads, while its product-selection guidance distinguishes Cloud CDN’s general web acceleration role from Media CDN’s large-scale video focus. AWS documents CloudFront for both VOD and live delivery from HTTP origins. These are documented use cases, not a comparative performance ranking (Google Cloud CDN product selection; AWS live streaming with CloudFront).

Where enterprise peer delivery fits

For a company streaming the same event to many employees over a constrained corporate network, peer-assisted delivery may reduce how much repeated media traffic crosses the wider network. Microsoft eCDN documents a hybrid approach that supports HLS and DASH and works with HTTP CDNs and existing players: peers exchange media while the service coordinates the mesh and the HTTP network remains part of delivery. It addresses a particular enterprise network pattern; it is not a universal replacement for a public video CDN (Microsoft eCDN technical overview).

Or let it run in the cloud

A video CDN is for delivering packaged video assets to viewers; it is not the same thing as keeping a YouTube channel continuously live from pre-recorded videos. If that is the job you need done, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded recordings or playlists. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
