To stream a prerecorded product tutorial as a YouTube Live event, play the video through an encoder and send the encoder’s output to a scheduled YouTube Live stream. Uploading a video to YouTube does not, by itself, make it a live broadcast. You can use a computer-based encoder or, for unattended scheduled playback without a computer, the AJA HELO Plus’s PlayToStream feature, which YouTube documents as a supported option. Tell customers the footage is prerecorded, particularly if nobody will be answering chat in real time.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- The final tutorial file, including a reviewed soundtrack and any product imagery or third-party clips.
- An encoder that can play the video file as its video source, or a compatible hardware appliance that can schedule prerecorded playback.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus access to YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose how to play the prerecorded tutorial
Computer and encoder
For a straightforward broadcast, use a computer encoder that can play the tutorial as its video input. The computer runs the playback and encoding process, so it must remain powered on, connected, and supervised as needed throughout the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes using an encoder to send a video feed to YouTube Live; it does not document a native YouTube Studio control that turns an uploaded file into a live stream on its own. Dedicated hardware for scheduled playback
YouTube’s encoder documentation names the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is an optional appliance route, not a requirement for every business. Consider it when unattended playback or avoiding a dedicated computer is important; the documentation does not establish comparative cost or reliability against computer-based setups.
Set up and run the YouTube Live event
- Check channel eligibility. Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. Allow for YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before the event date.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio, go to the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and select the intended visibility. Use the event’s stream URL and stream key to connect the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in customer-facing materials, or share it with people who do not need access. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current setup flow.
- Configure playback and encoder output. Select the tutorial file as the video source and route its audio correctly. Check the opening frame, sound level, aspect ratio, and playback endpoint. YouTube’s cited setup material supports the encoder workflow but does not specify a universal bitrate or resolution for every tutorial; choose settings appropriate to the source video and connection, then verify the resulting preview and stream health.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. This is a platform recommendation in YouTube’s guidance; it is not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Check available upload capacity and avoid saturating the connection with other activity during the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. - Rehearse well before customers arrive. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview, the intended customer watch page, and playback on a mobile device. Use a test with audio and motion similar to the real tutorial, and monitor stream health. - Set viewer expectations. State that the tutorial is prerecorded. If staff will respond to questions, assign someone to monitor chat and tell viewers when they can expect answers. YouTube describes Live as enabling real-time interaction through video and chat, but it does not prescribe a staffing model for customer support.
- End the broadcast and verify the archive. End the event on YouTube, then stop the encoder after the YouTube stream has stopped. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the event archive and visibility after the broadcast.
Protect rights and customer trust
Before streaming, confirm that the business has permission to use every element in the exact recording for both a live broadcast and any resulting archive. That includes music, voiceover, product imagery, and third-party clips. Owning or selling the featured product does not automatically grant rights to a soundtrack or other material in the video. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to hold the necessary rights for live and archived content; review YouTube’s Terms of Service and the applicable Community Guidelines before scheduling the event.

Make the customer-facing presentation deliberate: avoid exposing desktop notifications, file paths, encoder controls, or unrelated windows; confirm the video begins at the intended point; and decide in advance how chat questions will be handled. These are practical safeguards for a polished support broadcast, not special YouTube labeling requirements.
Decide whether a computer or appliance fits
- Choose a computer encoder when an employee can supervise playback and the existing computer and network are dependable enough for the event.
- Consider the AJA HELO Plus when scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer is valuable. YouTube identifies its PlayToStream functionality for this use, but does not publish a comparative reliability or cost study.
- Plan for failure impact. Consider who can spot a frozen file, muted audio, network interruption, or power issue, and how customers will be notified if the event is disrupted. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring, but does not provide outcome rates for either setup.
