To rotate real-estate clips and stream them from a folder, first inspect the videos, decide their orientation and playback order, then create a consistent output with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live using an RTMP or RTMPS stream key. Rotation changes video pixels, so it requires video encoding; simply concatenating or copying the original streams will not rotate them.
The examples below assume a Unix-like shell, an installed FFmpeg build with the needed codecs, and a folder named clips. File formats, rotation direction, and desired frame shape vary, so inspect your own clips and adapt the commands rather than treating one filter as right for every file.
1. Inspect the clips and choose the right rotation
“Rotate” can mean correcting a clip recorded sideways, applying a consistent quarter-turn to every file, or fitting portrait footage into a landscape stream. These are different jobs. Some phone recordings also store orientation as metadata; others have already encoded the orientation into the pixels. Check before processing, and do not assume every file in a folder needs the same correction.
Use ffprobe, installed alongside FFmpeg, to inspect a file:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate:stream_tags=rotate -show_entries format=duration -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 "clips/01-living-room.mp4"
This reports useful stream properties, including dimensions, frame-rate fields, codec, duration, and a rotation tag when present. To check whether a clip has audio, inspect its streams:
ffprobe -v error -show_entries stream=index,codec_type,codec_name -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 "clips/01-living-room.mp4"
Preview the clip as well. A rotation tag may be honored automatically by some players, while a stream-processing chain may need the actual picture transformed. Confirm the result visually before batch processing.
Choose an output shape
- Keep portrait clips portrait: use a portrait stream canvas if the whole program is intended for vertical viewing.
- Keep landscape clips landscape: rotate only footage that is genuinely sideways, then output to a landscape canvas.
- Mix portrait and landscape in one landscape stream: pad the portrait image into the landscape canvas rather than stretching it. Cropping to fill can remove room details, windows, or property features.
For a quarter-turn on one file, FFmpeg’s transpose filter is the usual pixel-rotation operation. For example:
ffmpeg -i "clips/sideways.mp4" -vf "transpose=clock" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 128k "rotated/sideways.mp4"
transpose=clock rotates clockwise; use transpose=cclock for counterclockwise. A 180-degree correction can use hflip, vflip. These examples re-encode the video, which is necessary to transform its pixels. They encode audio as AAC when an audio stream is present; if the source has no audio, omit the audio options or use an explicit silent-audio workflow if your live setup requires audio.

2. Make the folder into an intentional playlist
A directory does not define a reliable editorial order. Rename files with zero-padded prefixes if alphabetical order is suitable, for example 01-entry.mp4, 02-kitchen.mp4, and 10-garden.mp4. Otherwise, create a hand-curated list in the exact order you want.
For compatible files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join a list without re-encoding. Create clips.txt like this:
file 'rotated/01-entry.mp4'
file 'rotated/02-kitchen.mp4'
file 'rotated/03-garden.mp4'
Then concatenate:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i clips.txt -c copy property-tour.mp4
Stream-copy concatenation is appropriate only when the files’ stream properties are compatible enough for a continuous output. Differences in codec, dimensions, time base, frame rate, or stream layout can cause errors or an unreliable result. For mixed sources, normalize clips through re-encoding before joining. FFmpeg documents the distinction between the concat demuxer and the concat filter in its documentation and FAQ; the filter-based approach is intended for cases where re-encoding is needed.
Normalize mixed clips before joining
When clips differ, choose a single output resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout. Apply rotation first, then scale and pad to the shared canvas. For example, this illustrates a landscape 1920×1080 canvas that preserves the entire picture and pads unused space:

Adjust the transpose direction—or remove it—based on the actual clip. The scale-and-pad part fits the whole image into the chosen frame instead of cropping it. Apply the same output dimensions, frame rate, codec, pixel format, and audio settings to every normalized clip before using the concat demuxer. If clips have no audio or incompatible audio layouts, handle that deliberately so the joined output has consistent streams.
Filter names and available encoders can vary with the FFmpeg version and build. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed build’s supported options.
3. Send the finished program to YouTube Live
In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public command history, or share a screenshot that reveals it. In the command below, replace YOUR_STREAM_KEY locally with the key shown in YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i property-tour.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-re reads the file at its normal playback rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. The example targets 1080p30 H.264 and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. It assumes the input has audio. If the source is already normalized to your intended live settings, you may be able to avoid another quality-lossy encode by passing through compatible streams, but confirm that the resulting output meets YouTube’s requirements and carries the intended keyframe cadence. A filter or required pixel transformation means the video cannot simply be stream-copied.
Match the encoder to the stream
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. It recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps. For H.264, its recommended bitrate examples include:
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not guarantees of quality on a particular connection. Choose the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source footage and available upload capacity; enlarging a low-resolution property clip does not add detail. The YouTube live encoder settings guide is the reference for current requirements and recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Test privately and check stream health
Before a public broadcast, start a controlled test—such as an unlisted stream—and confirm that YouTube receives moving video and audible sound. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test clip transitions too; a stream that starts correctly can still expose gaps, frozen frames, or audio changes at joins.

5. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The picture is still sideways or upside down | The filter direction does not match the clip, or orientation metadata was mistaken for a pixel transform. | Preview the source and output; choose clockwise, counterclockwise, or 180-degree correction based on the actual image. Check the metadata with ffprobe. |
| Concat fails, freezes, or transitions behave oddly | Input streams differ in codec, dimensions, timing, or stream layout. | Normalize all clips to shared video and audio properties, then concatenate; do not assume -c copy can join arbitrary files. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The ingest URL or key is wrong, the key is stale, or the encoder cannot connect. | Copy the current key from YouTube Studio, verify the RTMP/RTMPS destination, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. Keep the key private. |
| Video buffers or stream health degrades | The configured total bitrate is too high for stable upload capacity or the connection varies. | Measure upload speed, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate until the connection can sustain the stream. |
| There is no audio or audio changes at joins | Some clips lack audio, use incompatible audio layouts, or the command assumes an audio stream that is absent. | Inspect each clip’s streams with ffprobe. Normalize audio consistently, or deliberately add silence where a continuous audio stream is required. |
6. Check rights and YouTube policy before looping property footage
Only stream footage and audio you have permission to use. Real-estate clips can include music, artwork, private information, or people whose appearance or voices require attention; permission to show a property does not automatically establish rights to every element in the recording. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers transmission settings, not a blanket copyright clearance. Review the applicable YouTube rules for your content and resolve rights questions before making a loop public.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the prepared videos to keep looping without leaving a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo runs an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos. It does not rotate source footage for you, so finish and verify the FFmpeg processing first. Then upload the finished video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
