Set membership perks in YouTube Studio under Earn → Memberships. Choose perks that fit a 24/7 channel
YouTube lets creators offer badges, members-only posts, custom emoji, members-first videos, members-only live chat, members-only livestreams, Member Milestone Chats, a member recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Keep the main loop public; make participation exclusive
For a channel whose core value is a continuous public stream, members-only chat on a public livestream is often a practical starting point: everyone can watch, but only members can post. This offers a participation benefit without putting the loop itself behind a paywall. You can also use badges and emoji for recognition in chat and comments.
Use exclusive content only when you can sustain it
A members-only livestream restricts viewing to members at the eligible levels, so reserve it for a distinct event or stream you can actually provide. Posts, polls, schedule updates, behind-the-scenes material, or members-first videos can add value if you can publish them reliably. YouTube advises creators to consider the time or cost of delivering perks; avoid benefits that require a stream channel designed to run continuously to produce a steady schedule of new work.

Plan cumulative tiers before publishing
A channel can have up to six membership levels, with one to five perks in each. Higher-priced levels automatically include the perks from lower levels, so write down the full benefit list for every tier before setting them up. Give each higher level a meaningful additional benefit rather than charging more for an otherwise identical package. There is no universally optimal number of tiers or price: weigh audience value, creator time and cost, whether a perk changes access or mainly provides recognition, and whether you can deliver it on a predictable schedule.
Set up membership levels and perks in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility and availability. Memberships are subject to YouTube’s eligibility, location, and policy requirements. Confirm that the feature is available and enabled for your channel using YouTube’s channel memberships eligibility guidance.
- Open the membership editor. On a computer, go to YouTube Studio, select Earn → Memberships, then choose Edit in the levels-and-perks section. The Studio interface may change, so follow the current labels shown for your channel.
- Create levels and select prices. Add no more than six levels at the prices YouTube makes available to your channel. Add one to five perks to each level, bearing in mind that higher levels inherit lower-level perks.
- Choose perks you can fulfill. For a looping channel, consider badges or emoji, members-only chat during public streams, or a modest, clearly described cadence of posts or exclusive events. Check that every benefit is allowed by the current membership policies and feasible for the people who will operate the channel.
- Submit the levels for review. Publish the setup for YouTube to review. YouTube Help estimates that the membership-level and perk review takes about a day. Some channels may also have a separate membership activation review after YPP acceptance; YouTube says to allow up to two days for that review. These are estimates, not guaranteed completion times.
- Review performance and adjust carefully. In Studio, monitor membership levels, acquisition, and retention. Refine the offer based on what viewers choose, without adding promises the channel cannot keep.
Enable members-only chat while keeping a stream public
Members-only chat and members-only livestreams are different controls. Members-only chat limits who can send messages; it does not by itself make a public stream private. To offer chat access as a perk while leaving the loop visible:

- In YouTube Studio, create or open the livestream whose chat you want to restrict.
- Open that stream’s settings and enable members-only chat.
- Save the change, then verify the stream remains public if public viewing is part of your plan.
Non-members can still watch a public stream with members-only chat enabled, but they cannot post in its chat. If you instead select a members-only livestream, viewing is restricted to members at the relevant levels. Check the current stream controls in Studio before going live; controls and availability can vary by channel.
Keep the offer within YouTube’s rules
Membership perks are subject to YouTube’s membership policies, and the creator is responsible for delivering them. Do not offer downloads of content available on YouTube as a membership perk; YouTube lists these among prohibited perks. For unusual benefits, check the current membership perk rules before publishing.

Monetization also depends on the channel’s content, not just its membership setup. YouTube’s channel monetization policies, clarified July 15, 2025, discuss inauthentic content, including generic, repetitive, or mass-produced material, and apply their review to a channel as a whole. YouTube says the substance of each video should be materially varied and deliver creative, educational, or other value; its policy includes livestreams in its use of “video.”
That policy does not establish that looping alone automatically disqualifies a channel. It does mean creators should make the stream’s original value clear and avoid assuming that continuous playback by itself satisfies monetization standards. Review the current policy if the stream consists largely of unchanged material for long periods.
