Shutter Encoder Settings for Preparing Videos for a YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Shutter Encoder to prepare a clean video file; use a separate, verified playback or streaming setup to repeat it and send it to YouTube. For a compatibility-first SDR file, H.264, the source’s intended aspect ratio, and its native frame rate are sensible starting points. YouTube’s live bitrate and keyframe recommendations apply to the stream arriving at YouTube—not automatically to the offline file you export.

What Shutter Encoder does—and what it does not establish

Shutter Encoder documents H.264 conversion and an RTMP Stream output, including a YouTube RTMP URL example. Its documentation does not establish that a source can be repeated indefinitely. Treat file preparation, looping, and live ingest as separate jobs: encode and inspect the file, arrange playback or repetition in a setup with a verified loop function, then configure that setup to deliver a stream YouTube accepts. Shutter Encoder’s documentation, dated 27 January 2026, is available at Shutter Encoder documentation.

Choose settings for the prepared video file

Codec

For SDR when broad compatibility is the priority, choose H.264. Shutter Encoder documents H.264 output, and YouTube lists H.264 as a supported live codec. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for live ingest, but the right codec depends on whether the encoding and playback path you actually use supports it. Do not assume that selecting a live codec option in an offline export makes it suitable for every later streaming setup.

Resolution, scale, and aspect ratio

Preserve the source’s intended aspect ratio and resolution unless you have a specific reason to change them. Shutter Encoder offers Adapt, Stretch, and Crop scaling options. Adapt preserves proportions and adds bars when necessary; Stretch fills the chosen dimensions by distorting the image; Crop fills them by removing excess image area. Use Stretch or Crop only when that result is intentional. Check the exported frame for bars, distortion, or missing content.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Frame rate and scan

Retain the source frame rate where practical rather than converting without a reason. A frame-rate conversion may drop or synthesize frames depending on the selected method. YouTube’s live guidance supports up to 60 fps and recommends progressive scan in its advanced settings; those are requirements for live ingest, not a reason by themselves to alter a file. If you do convert, inspect motion for judder or artifacts.

Quality and bitrate for an offline export

Shutter Encoder exposes VBR, CBR, and CQ/CRF controls. Choose an offline quality or bitrate target according to the source, acceptable file size, and visual inspection. YouTube’s live bitrate table is for incoming live streams; it does not prescribe one universal bitrate for a prepared file. A larger file may preserve more detail but takes more storage and upload time, while a lower target can reduce size at the cost of visible quality. Review representative high-motion scenes rather than relying on a setting alone.

Audio, color, and fast start

  • Audio: Check that the chosen output includes the intended audio tracks and that sound remains clean at both the beginning and end of the clip. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for live ingest; its advanced guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo at a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
  • SDR color: YouTube’s guidance recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. Do not apply HDR settings to an SDR source. Its guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that specification.
  • Fast start: Shutter Encoder’s Enable fast start option moves video header information to the start of the file to improve playback startup. It does not make a video loop indefinitely or, by itself, satisfy YouTube’s live ingest requirements.

Set live-stream parameters separately

Once the file is ready and your chosen setup can repeat it, configure that setup’s live encoder for the YouTube destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit to Google’s servers. The bitrate examples below are YouTube’s H.264 live recommendations in its guidance accessed in 2026; they are not offline export targets or guarantees of a particular visual result.

Live output YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation
720p30 6 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps

For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube’s full live encoder settings guidance. Match the outgoing configuration to the actual video and encoder, and make sure the internet connection has enough stable upload capacity for the stream.

Keyframes and audio for ingest

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency for live ingest and says not to exceed four seconds. Shutter Encoder documents a GOP control, but its reviewed documentation does not provide a YouTube loop-stream preset that automatically sets the live keyframe interval. Confirm the setting in the encoder that sends the live stream, rather than assuming an offline file’s GOP control configures live output.

YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for live audio and recommends 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz in its advanced settings. Check for silence, clipping, unwanted track selection, and abrupt level changes in the file, then listen across the loop boundary in the actual playback setup.

Prepare, check, and start the loop stream

  1. Inspect the source. Identify its resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, audio tracks, and whether it is SDR or HDR. Decide what should remain unchanged and what, if anything, needs conversion.
  2. Set up the file conversion in Shutter Encoder. Choose H.264 for a compatibility-first SDR workflow, preserve the intended proportions, and retain the source frame rate unless conversion is needed. Select an offline quality or bitrate target based on desired file size and visual review—not by copying a live-ingest bitrate by default.
  3. Export and review the complete result. Check picture and audio from start to finish, including the ending and restart point. Verify the scale has not unintentionally stretched or cropped the image. Enable Fast start if earlier playback startup is useful.
  4. Set up looping separately. Use a playback or hosting method whose repeat behavior you have verified. Shutter Encoder documents RTMP output, but the reviewed documentation does not confirm indefinite source repetition. Do not go live until you know what will happen when playback reaches the end.
  5. Configure the live encoder and YouTube destination. Set the outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, audio, and two-second keyframe interval in the actual live-output path. Use RTMPS where available and enter the correct YouTube stream destination and key in that setup.
  6. Test before the event. YouTube’s live encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test representative motion and audio, observe YouTube’s stream health, and confirm that the stream reconnects or continues as expected when the loop restarts.

Common problems and what to check

  • The video ends instead of repeating: The encoding step does not prove the playback system loops. Check the repeat setting or choose a playback path with verified looping behavior; test through at least one full restart.
  • The image is stretched or important content is missing: Revisit the scale mode. Use Adapt to preserve proportions with bars if needed; Stretch distorts and Crop removes part of the image.
  • Motion looks uneven after export: Compare the output with the source frame rate. If you converted frame rate, test a different method or retain the original where practical.
  • YouTube reports stream-health problems: Check that the live encoder—not just the offline file—uses an appropriate codec, CBR, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration. Also check whether upload capacity is stable for the selected output.
  • Audio disappears or changes at the restart: Confirm track mapping and inspect the file’s end-to-start transition. Listen to a full loop in the playback setup before relying on it live.
  • Playback takes time to begin: Fast start can move file headers to the beginning and may improve startup. It does not repair a looping or live-ingest configuration.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Encoding does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other material in the video. Before streaming, verify that you have permission to use all included audio and visuals, and check YouTube’s rules for live content and monetization. A continuous stream also does not, on its own, establish that content qualifies for monetization; originality and channel eligibility are separate questions. Use YouTube’s current policies and review any claims or restrictions shown in YouTube Studio before going live.
