If FFmpeg still appears to be running but YouTube has stopped receiving a usable stream, the process status alone cannot tell you where the connection failed. Compare FFmpeg’s error output with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then investigate the encoder, RTMPS connection, network route, and YouTube stream state in that order. An Indian server’s location is not, by itself, evidence that geography caused the disconnect.
What a running FFmpeg process does—and does not—tell you
FFmpeg can remain alive while its output connection to YouTube is no longer delivering a usable stream. A live process therefore does not prove that the publishing connection is healthy or that YouTube is receiving video. Check two views together: FFmpeg’s stderr output and the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
The title does not establish a root cause. Possible layers include the stream URL or key, RTMPS transport or TLS setup, outbound network connectivity, encoder settings, or YouTube’s stream state. The available evidence does not identify an India-specific outage or cloud-provider defect.
Diagnose the disconnect in order
-
Preserve the failure evidence
Save the complete FFmpeg command line and the stderr output from around the time of the disconnect. FFmpeg’s
-reportoption writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report file;-loglevelcan increase logging detail. Record the exact time and compare it with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Capture evidence before changing multiple settings, so you can tell which layer the change affected.Free tools Windows power users keep installed

-
Verify the destination URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and key for the intended live stream, then check that FFmpeg is using those exact values. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance uses the stream URL as the encoder’s server address and the stream key in its key field. Look for a stale key, a mistyped or malformed path, or a URL copied from a different stream configuration.
-
Check RTMPS details if that is your configured transport
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. For an RTMPS connection, the scheme, ingestion hostname and application path, port 443, SSL/TLS behavior, and hostname/SNI must all match the endpoint requirements. A timeout can occur if an encoder attempts cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Verify the configured URL, port, TLS support, and SNI rather than changing transport settings blindly.

Validate encoder settings and sustained capacity
Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Its published H.264 examples include:
Output YouTube recommended bitrate 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of your VM or its route. A cloud server’s advertised or nominal network speed does not establish that its connection to the configured YouTube ingest endpoint is stable at the bitrate you need.

Test the route from the VM and look for patterns
Check DNS resolution and outbound reachability from the VM to the actual configured ingest host and port. Note whether disconnects coincide with VM restarts, route changes, resource contention, or cloud-provider/network events. If useful, compare another network route as a diagnostic control; that comparison can help isolate the network path, but does not by itself prove that Indian hosting is generally responsible.
-
Keep managed-ingest diagnostics in their proper scope
Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation lists issues such as an invalid endpoint URI, an inactive channel, duplicate encoder connections, and disallowed source IP ranges for that API. Those are service-specific checks. They may suggest questions to ask when diagnosing another managed ingest service, but they do not establish why YouTube rejected a particular FFmpeg stream.

How to interpret the evidence
- FFmpeg reports a connection or transport error and YouTube reports no incoming stream: investigate the destination, protocol/TLS configuration, and outbound route using the exact timestamp and error.
- YouTube reports an incoming stream but stream health is poor: compare the encoder’s bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s recommendations, and check whether the VM can sustain the selected bitrate.
- The failure follows a VM restart, route change, or provider event: preserve those timestamps and compare repeated occurrences before concluding that the provider or region is the cause.
- The logs do not show the failure clearly: increase FFmpeg logging detail and capture another incident before changing several variables. A process remaining alive is not sufficient evidence of a successful publish.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Assuming that FFmpeg is healthy because its process exists: inspect the output connection and YouTube’s stream-health view as well.
- Changing bitrate, URL, protocol, and server at once: make one controlled change at a time after recording the baseline, or you may lose the clue that identifies the failing layer.
- Blaming the Indian region without a route test: location alone does not establish causation. Look for repeatable correlation and test the path to the actual ingest endpoint.
- Applying another service’s error checklist as if it were YouTube’s: provider-specific diagnostics are not proof of YouTube’s reason for a disconnect.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream rather than troubleshoot a custom FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
