To loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live from Windows, use FFmpeg to read the file at its intended playback rate, encode it to a YouTube-compatible format, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a first test, H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate that your sustained upload can maintain is a practical baseline. Test the complete loop before relying on it: a looping FFmpeg input does not guarantee gapless playback or an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
Before you start
You need a Windows computer that can run FFmpeg, a prerecorded video file you have the right to stream, a YouTube channel with live streaming available, and a stable upstream connection. Live-streaming eligibility and account setup can depend on YouTube account status; use YouTube’s current Live Control Room rather than assuming an old tutorial’s screen or ingest address still applies.
- Install or locate an FFmpeg build for Windows that includes the input and output protocols you need. Follow the FFmpeg project’s documentation for build and command details; builds can differ.
- Measure sustained upload capacity at the actual streaming location, preferably at the time you plan to broadcast. Do not choose an encoding rate based only on a brief speed-test peak.
- Keep your stream key private. Do not publish it in a command example, screenshot, support post, or shared command history.
- Use video and audio that you are authorized to broadcast. A successful live connection does not grant rights to music, gameplay, or other copyrighted material.
YouTube’s published encoder guidance is not India-specific. Choose settings based on the file and the connection you will use in India; the cited guidance does not identify a separate Indian bitrate preset or ingestion endpoint.
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate
Match the output to the source and the upload connection. Higher resolutions and frame rates generally require more bitrate. A stable lower setting is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate examples
The following values are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings table, accessed 2026-10-03. The page’s publication date is not stated. These are published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.
| Input resolution and frame rate | Minimum H.264 bitrate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, if the source is 1080p30 and the sustained upstream connection has room for the stream plus normal network variation, 14 Mbps is YouTube’s recommended H.264 value for that mode. If it cannot hold that rate reliably, lower the output resolution or frame rate, or select a lower bitrate within YouTube’s published range and test it. Leave headroom for connection fluctuations rather than planning to consume all measured upload capacity.

Codec and audio
YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options. H.264 is used in the illustrative command below because it is a straightforward baseline; it is not the only listed supported codec. YouTube recommends CBR, keyframes every 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds apart, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 kbps stereo audio. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance before publishing or changing a long-running setup, since recommendations may change.
Get the current RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings area, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the URL and the stream key for that stream.
- Use the address shown for the specific stream rather than one copied from an unrelated or older tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over a secure connection.
- Store the key securely and insert it locally when you run FFmpeg. Anyone with access to a usable key may be able to send video to your stream.
YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance explains where to find the URL and key. Its RTMPS ingestion guide describes valid ingestion endpoints and application paths, port 443, and the hostname needed for SNI-based authentication. Do not edit the supplied endpoint unless your network or YouTube’s instructions require it.

Run an illustrative FFmpeg loop command on Windows
This Command Prompt example shows where options and credentials go; it is illustrative and version-dependent, not a command validated against every Windows FFmpeg build or media file. Confirm the options in the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version. Replace the file path and destination locally. Never publish a working key.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -c:v libx264 -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "rtmps://ACTUAL_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM/STREAM_KEY"
- Replace
C:pathtovideo.mp4with the actual file path. Keep quotation marks around paths containing spaces. - Replace the entire destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, in the format required by that endpoint. Treat the example destination as a placeholder, not a literal YouTube URL.
-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1requests indefinite looping of the input in FFmpeg versions that support that option; verify its behavior in your installed version.-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateillustrate a CBR-style target of 8 Mbps. This is a sample value, not a universal recommendation. Set it for your resolution, frame rate, codec, and sustained upload capacity.-bufsizeis an encoder rate-control setting; the exact result depends on the build and encoder.-r 30sets a 30 fps output in this example. The-g 60and-keyint_min 60values illustrate a 60-frame keyframe interval at 30 fps, or 2 seconds. Check encoder behavior and YouTube’s current guidance for your selected frame rate.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder where that encoder is available in the build. If it is not, use a suitable supported encoder or build; do not assume all Windows binaries include identical components.- The audio options illustrate AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. If the source has no audio or uses a different layout, test the output and adjust appropriately.
-f flvspecifies the output container used for this RTMP-style delivery example. Keep input options before the relevant-i; output encoding and muxing options belong before the destination.
The command does not prove that arbitrary files will join seamlessly at the loop point. Some files have different opening and ending levels, timestamps, frame rates, or audio tails; test the exact file and watch the transition. FFmpeg documents protocol and muxer behavior, but its general documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted YouTube acceptance of a loop.

Test before a public or extended broadcast
- Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test stream in Live Control Room.
- Include movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube Help specifically recommends testing with comparable audio and motion.
- Watch the YouTube preview and stream health while FFmpeg runs. Check for audio clipping or silence, frozen or uneven motion, dropped frames, resolution or frame-rate mismatches, and problems at the loop boundary.
- Let the file complete a full loop, then confirm that the next pass behaves acceptably. A short preview that ends before the loop point cannot test the transition.
- Review YouTube’s health messages and FFmpeg output. Change one relevant setting at a time—such as bitrate, frame rate, or output resolution—and repeat the test.
- Stop the test and confirm the stream ends as expected. Only then decide whether the setup is suitable for a longer broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A successful test demonstrates behavior under those test conditions; it is not a guarantee of indefinite continuity.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| SSL error | Check that the destination uses the exact URL from Live Control Room and that both protocol and server are correct: use rtmps, not rtmp. YouTube says an incorrect URL can cause an SSL error. |
| Connection timed out | Recheck the URL and confirm that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say to specify port 443 when needed; follow the endpoint format shown by Live Control Room and verify that the network permits the secure connection. |
| Connection fails despite a seemingly correct address | Confirm the endpoint and application path are valid, and preserve the hostname. Google’s RTMPS guide describes port 443 and hostname requirements for SNI-based authentication. FFmpeg defines RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection; protocol availability depends on how the binary was built. |
| YouTube receives a stream, but reports unstable health or dropped frames | Lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate and test again. Check sustained upstream capacity at the streaming location and time; a speed-test peak is not proof that the connection can hold the stream continuously. |
| Video works but audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync | Check that the source contains the expected audio track, then inspect the AAC settings and listen through a full loop. Test with representative movement and sound before broadcasting publicly. |
| The loop has a pause, jump, or abrupt audio change | Inspect the source’s first and last frames and audio levels, and test a complete repeat. The loop option requests rereading the input; it does not guarantee a seamless transition. |
| The stream stops after a temporary failure | Check FFmpeg’s error output, network availability, YouTube stream health, and the current key and endpoint. Reconnect or recovery logic may help with some temporary output failures, but it cannot correct an invalid key, wrong endpoint, unavailable connection, or account-side issue. |
Copyright, reused material, and channel responsibility
Encoding settings do not determine whether a video is eligible to be streamed or monetized. Before sending a prerecorded loop, make sure you hold the necessary rights or permissions for the video, game footage, music, and any other included material, and review YouTube’s current policies for live content and monetization. Repeating material does not make it original or remove copyright obligations. Do not rely on a successful encoder connection as evidence that a stream complies with YouTube policy.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a Windows PC on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; this is recovery behavior, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime.
- The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
