Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Either MP4 or MOV can work. OBS lists both as supported formats for its built-in Media Source on Windows, macOS and Linux. What matters is whether OBS can play the specific video and audio codecs inside your file—not just whether its name ends in .mp4 or .mov. Test the actual clip in your scene before going live.
MP4 vs. MOV: which should you choose?
If you already have a clip, try it in OBS before converting it. OBS describes MP4 as a de facto standard for internet video and MOV as its sister format; their codec compatibility can differ, and MOV has a historical preference on Mac platforms. The better choice depends on the codecs in the file and the software that exported it, not on a universal rule that one extension always works better.
Keep the local file format separate from the YouTube stream format. MP4 or MOV describes the container OBS reads for the clip. Your outgoing stream has its own encoder settings, including video and audio codecs, bitrate mode, frame rate and keyframe interval.
OBS Media Sources lists both formats for playback. Its Audio/Video Formats Guide explains that container and codec compatibility are different considerations.

Play a pre-recorded clip in OBS
- Add the file: In your scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the local video file.
- Set playback behavior: Enable Loop only if the clip should repeat. Use Restart playback when source becomes active if it should start from the beginning whenever the scene becomes active. Other available controls include hardware decoding when available and hiding the source after playback.
- Preview picture and sound: Play the clip in the scene and check that both video and audio behave as intended. Confirm framing, volume and scene timing as well as playback.
- Use a different source if needed: If the built-in Media Source cannot play the file, or you need playlist behavior, try VLC Video. Install VLC first; with 64-bit OBS, use the matching 64-bit VLC version.
Check the YouTube stream settings separately
A working local clip does not by itself confirm that your YouTube broadcast is configured correctly. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Select settings appropriate to your encoder and stream, and check YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send.
Before the event, test with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, then monitor stream health. This checks the full path: the file in OBS, the scene and audio mix, and the outgoing encoder settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- The source is blank or will not play: An MP4 or MOV extension alone does not guarantee that the codecs inside are supported by the playback path. Try VLC Video with VLC installed, or export a version using codecs compatible with your setup.
- The video plays but the audio does not: Check that the file contains an audio track and that the source and OBS audio mix are configured as intended. Test the clip in the scene before broadcasting.
- The clip starts at the wrong point: If the scene should start the clip from the beginning, enable Restart playback when source becomes active. If it should repeat, enable Loop.
- The clip works locally but the live stream has a problem: Review the outgoing encoder settings and stream health independently of the source file’s container. A local MP4 or MOV does not set YouTube’s codec, bitrate or keyframe interval.
Do not confuse playback with recording
OBS’s caution about MP4 and MOV finalization applies to recording directly to those containers: an interruption while writing can leave a conventional recording unfinalized and potentially unrecoverable. It does not mean OBS cannot play an existing MP4 or MOV file. OBS discusses fragmented and hybrid MP4/MOV recording options for resilience; its guide also recommends MKV for many local recording cases, with remuxing available when a more compatible output container is needed.
