Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You do not automatically need to convert H.265 (HEVC) videos to H.264 before streaming an FFmpeg playlist to YouTube Live. YouTube lists HEVC as supported for RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingest. First choose the ingest protocol, inspect the files, and test the actual output in YouTube Studio; transcode only if the files or your chosen output configuration require it.
What “playlist” means—and when conversion is needed
An FFmpeg input playlist is a way to sequence files. It is not the same thing as a YouTube HLS media playlist: using an FFmpeg playlist does not make your outgoing stream HLS. For a conventional live stream, RTMPS may be the simpler path if the input files and output are compatible. Choose HLS when you need that ingest protocol and can meet its segment and playlist requirements.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.265/HEVC, H.264, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, and HEVC for HLS. That means codec alone is not a reason to re-encode every source. Container, stream layout, audio tracks, and consistency across playlist items still matter. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its HLS ingestion setup describe the applicable requirements.
Inspect every input before building the stream
Check each file with FFmpeg’s inspection tools, such as ffprobe, before choosing a command. Record the video codec, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, container, audio codec, channel layout, and number of audio tracks. Mixed resolutions, frame rates, or audio layouts may require a normalized output; a playlist that changes properties between files can produce an unstable or incompatible stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the HEVC video and its container/muxing path work for the selected ingest, test passing the video through rather than spending VPS CPU on a re-encode.
- If YouTube rejects the stream, the files are inconsistent, or your output path requires another codec, transcode to a supported target and encode audio to match the chosen protocol.
- Keep the YouTube stream key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs. Supply it through a protected configuration or environment mechanism appropriate to your VPS.
FFmpeg can convert and mux media, but there is no safe universal command for every playlist: the right input syntax, stream mapping, frame rate, bitrate, audio handling, and protocol depend on the actual files and intended output. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options that match your installation and workflow.
Choose RTMPS or HLS
| Path | What to configure | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Ordinary live ingest when the selected output and media are compatible. |
| HLS | Use TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube lists HEVC as supported and accepts AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. | When HLS is the required ingest path and the encoder can meet its segment and playlist constraints. |
These are distinct output protocols. An FFmpeg file playlist can feed either workflow, but it does not satisfy HLS requirements by itself. For the full protocol-specific details, use the linked RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and HLS setup guidance.

Match bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and audio to the output
Video bitrate and frame rate
Select the bitrate row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you will actually send; do not choose by source resolution alone. YouTube’s published recommendations for H.265/AV1 include 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60, with a listed minimum of 4 Mbps for both. At 720p30 and 720p60, its recommended value is 6 Mbps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain the stream.
Allow sustained upload capacity beyond the encoded video rate for audio and network variation. YouTube advises selecting quality based on the connection and running a speed test. Its live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps; choose the matching row rather than assuming every source frame rate should be sent unchanged.

Rate control and keyframes
For RTMP/RTMPS, set constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Configure the output encoder accordingly, whether you are passing through a compatible encoded stream or transcoding it.
Audio
| Audio case | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. |
| 5.1 | 48 kHz and 384 kbps; AAC is required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. |
| HLS codec choices | AAC, AC3, or EAC3. |
For HLS, YouTube gives the same sample rates and bitrates and lists AAC, AC3, or EAC3 as supported audio codecs. Verify channel layout and track selection across all playlist items so a clip change does not leave the stream without audio.

Build and validate the playlist workflow
- Prepare the input list. Use the FFmpeg playlist/input method that fits your files and intended sequencing. Confirm file paths are valid on the VPS and that every item has been inspected. Normalize incompatible sources if needed.
- Set the output deliberately. Choose RTMPS or HLS first, then configure codec path, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio codec, sample rate, and channels against YouTube’s requirements. Do not copy a command intended for another protocol.
- Protect credentials. Put the stream key in a protected runtime configuration rather than hard-coding it into a script that could be exposed. Use the ingest URL and key shown for the live event in YouTube Studio.
- Test before depending on it. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real stream. Check that the playlist advances, audio remains present through transitions, the bitrate stays near the configured target, and YouTube Studio reports a healthy stream.
- Plan for interruption. FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer recovery options, including
attempt_recovery, a recovery wait time, and real-time file input. Evaluate those options for your setup rather than treating them as guaranteed recovery. Run FFmpeg under process supervision and monitor both the process and YouTube stream health.
FFmpeg’s documented recovery example is an implementation option, not proof that every network or YouTube interruption will recover transparently. VPS capacity and provider uptime depend on the chosen service and are not established by these encoder settings. For protocol requirements and current settings, check YouTube’s encoder page before deployment.

- YouTube rejects the video codec: Confirm the outgoing stream codec and protocol, not just the source filename. Test a compatible HEVC pass-through path; if it still fails or the output path is unsuitable, transcode to a supported codec such as H.264.
- The stream connects but playback is unstable: Check that the VPS has sustained upload capacity for the configured bitrate, that CBR is used for RTMP/RTMPS, and that the keyframe interval follows YouTube guidance.
- HLS ingest fails despite an FFmpeg playlist: An input playlist is not an HLS media playlist. Verify TS output, 1–4 second segments, no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges.
- Audio disappears or changes unexpectedly between clips: Inspect all input tracks and layouts, map the intended track, and use an audio format and settings accepted by the selected ingest protocol.
- The process stops after a network interruption: Check FFmpeg logs and process supervision. Consider evaluating FIFO recovery options, but verify behavior with a controlled test and monitor YouTube Studio rather than assuming the process will reconnect correctly.
- The stream key is exposed: Replace it in YouTube Studio and update the protected runtime configuration; do not leave the old key in a public script or log.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
