How to Fix Crackling Audio in a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fix crackling in a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, first find out whether the noise is in an OBS local recording, the live stream, or only your monitoring path. Then check sample rates, OBS audio buffering and logs, duplicate audio capture, mixer levels, and system load—in that order. Crackling has several possible causes, so avoid changing bitrate or buying hardware until a test points to them.

First, identify where the crackling happens

Use the same OBS scene and audio source to make a short local recording, then compare it with the live stream. OBS recommends testing settings before streaming (OBS streaming connection troubleshooting). Listen to the recording outside OBS as well as to the live stream, and note whether the noise is audible on both, only in the stream, or only through one monitoring route.

  • Crackling in both recording and stream: Start with the source, capture path, sample rates, levels, and system load.
  • Clean recording but crackling stream: Investigate what differs in the live path, including stream delivery and the way you monitor it. This comparison narrows the diagnosis but does not prove a single cause.
  • Only your monitoring sounds bad: Check the monitoring device and route before changing the audio sent to YouTube.

Keep the test short and change one setting at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

Check sample rates across the whole audio path

Compare the sample rate selected in OBS with the formats used by the actual playback and capture devices. Include any routing or virtual-audio software between the player and OBS; matching only one device is not enough. OBS Analyzer identifies mismatched rates as a possible source of drift or distortion and recommends 48 kHz in its diagnostic guidance (OBS Log Analyzer).

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and note the sample rate.
  2. Check the operating-system format for the playback device carrying the lofi audio and for any capture device or interface OBS uses. Also check audio-routing software, if present.
  3. Make the active parts of the signal chain consistent. If you choose 48 kHz, use it across the relevant devices and OBS where supported.
  4. Retest with a local recording. If a device or application needs reinitializing after a format change, restart it; change only one setting at a time.

The correct setting depends on the devices and software in your setup. Do not assume a sample-rate mismatch without comparing the active formats.

Read the OBS log for buffering and timing clues

Inspect the OBS log or Analyzer output for sample-rate mismatch and maximum audio buffering messages. Treat a warning as a clue, not a diagnosis: OBS Analyzer associates maximum buffering with high system load and possible interruption of an audio source, and also notes incorrect device timestamps as a possible contributor. It suggests restarting OBS to reset buffering (OBS Log Analyzer).

  • If the warning appears during a busy period, close unnecessary workloads and repeat the recording test.
  • If the log points to device timing, check which device is involved and whether the symptom follows it.
  • Restart OBS as a controlled test when buffering is reported; compare a new recording rather than assuming the restart permanently fixed the cause.

Make sure OBS is not capturing the same audio twice

Check the sources in the active scene alongside the global audio devices in Settings → Audio. If an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source uses a device that is also selected globally, OBS warns that the duplicate capture can create echo (OBS audio sources). Remove or disable the duplicate route, then record again.

OBS documents device timestamps as a Windows-only option. Test that setting only if the affected device or log symptoms make timing a plausible issue, and compare before and after recordings. It is not a universal crackling fix.

Check the mixer for clipping

Watch the OBS mixer while the audio is playing, especially when the crackle occurs. OBS says final stream or recording audio must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion (OBS audio mixer guide).

  1. If peaks reach or exceed 0 dBFS, lower the source level or mixer gain.
  2. Make another local recording at the loudest part of the lofi track.
  3. Listen for improvement and confirm peaks stay below 0 dBFS.

Clipping can sound distorted, but crackling can have other causes too. If the mixer is not clipping, continue through the diagnostic sequence rather than lowering levels arbitrarily.

Separate audio problems from system and network problems

System load and OBS performance

If audio-buffering warnings coincide with heavy CPU use or other system activity, close unnecessary workloads and test again. OBS documents performance and resource issues that can affect rendering and encoding (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting). Such performance problems can be worth investigating, but they do not by themselves establish the cause of an audio artifact.

Dropped frames and stream delivery

Network dropped frames are a different symptom from crackling audio. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-stability or bitrate issue (OBS streaming connection troubleshooting). Do not change bitrate as an assumed cure for crackling; first establish whether the audio itself is affected in a local recording.

Investigate hardware only when the symptom follows it

After checking software settings, isolate the hardware path with controlled tests. If the problem follows one interface, capture device, port, or routing driver, investigate that component’s connection and driver. For example, disconnect or switch one device at a time and record again, keeping the scene and audio source otherwise unchanged.

A historical OBS forum discussion suggested shared USB bandwidth for a particular capture-card setup, but that is anecdotal and configuration-specific (OBS forum: “Crackling Audio”). It does not establish that a powered hub, USB controller card, or hardware replacement is a general remedy. Consider those only if tests isolate a relevant USB or device path.

Use the evidence to choose the next fix

What you observe Next step
Local recording and stream both crackle Check sample rates, duplicate capture, mixer clipping, buffering clues, and system load.
Sample rates differ across active devices or routing software Make the relevant formats consistent, then retest with a local recording.
OBS reports maximum audio buffering Check system load and device timing; restart OBS as a controlled test.
Mixer peaks reach or exceed 0 dBFS Lower the source or mixer gain and record the loudest section again.
Problem follows one device or connection Investigate that device, driver, port, or routing path before considering replacement.
Recording is clean but viewers report stream-only artifacts Investigate the live and monitoring paths separately; do not infer that bitrate is the cause.

Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream but maintaining OBS on a home computer is the burden, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo.

StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Cloud streaming does not diagnose crackling in an OBS setup—the troubleshooting steps above are for that. For the cloud option, upload your lofi video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Try StreamNeo with the free first day.
