For a 1440p60 YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Those are YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendations; the codec you send to YouTube determines which figure applies. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval.
Recommended bitrate for 1440p60 live ingestion
| Video codec sent to YouTube | Recommended bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are video bitrates for a live encoder ingesting a 1440p60 stream, not guarantees of a particular viewing quality. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The minimums are lower bounds in its guidance, not the target to choose when aiming for the recommended 1440p60 settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Why prerecorded video still uses live-stream settings
If an encoder sends a prerecorded video to YouTube as a live broadcast, YouTube receives it as a live stream. Set the bitrate for the live ingest, using the codec the encoder sends—not the settings used to create or upload the original file.
YouTube separately recommends 24 Mbps for 1440p SDR uploads at high frame rates. That figure applies to encoding a file for upload, not to the live-ingest recommendation for a 1440p60 broadcast. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Choose the codec and bitrate your encoder can reliably send
H.264: 34 Mbps recommended
Use 34 Mbps when the live encoder sends H.264. This is YouTube’s recommended 1440p60 live video bitrate; the listed minimum is 8 Mbps.
AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 24 Mbps recommended
Use 24 Mbps when the encoder sends AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum for these codecs at 1440p60. Confirm that your encoder and chosen streaming workflow support the codec before selecting it.

The figures do not establish that one codec will look better for every creator or encoder. Make the choice based on codec support and stable upload capacity as well as the applicable recommendation.
Set the encoder for a stable 1440p60 broadcast
- Set output resolution and frame rate. Configure the live encoder for 2560 × 1440 at 60 frames per second, if that matches the source and the workflow you intend to broadcast.
- Select the ingest codec and video bitrate. Use 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Do not confuse the chosen ingest codec with the codec used to save the source file.
- Choose CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live streaming.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS if your workflow supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. The live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1.
- Check audio and stream health. Send a representative test with audio and movement like the planned broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and event.
For its test guidance, YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Check upload capacity before going live
YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a stream. For a 34 Mbps video stream, 20% extra is about 6.8 Mbps, so roughly 40.8 Mbps of available upload capacity is a practical arithmetic implication before accounting for other traffic. This is a calculation from YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a separate published YouTube target.
Check the connection where and when the encoder will run, and account for other devices and network use. A wired connection is an optional way to connect an encoder to a router; YouTube’s guidance does not require Ethernet or specify a particular cable type. The essential issue is stable available upload capacity.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and stream problems
- Stream health reports instability or the stream drops: Check whether the available upload capacity is sufficient for the selected bitrate plus headroom, and reduce competing network traffic. A network disruption can break a live stream.
- The encoder rejects the selected bitrate or codec: Verify the encoder’s codec support and configuration. Match the recommendation to the codec actually sent to YouTube: 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- The stream does not match the intended 1440p60 output: Confirm the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate, rather than relying on the source file’s properties alone.
- Video or audio problems appear during playback: Run a representative test that includes audio and movement, then check YouTube’s stream-health information and messages while it is running.
- A file-upload bitrate seems to conflict with the live setting: Treat upload-file encoding and live ingestion as separate workflows. The 24 Mbps upload recommendation for high-frame-rate 1440p SDR files is not a replacement for the codec-specific live recommendation.
