Use your own merchant UPI QR, place it in the promo video as an overlay, then test the exported video in the actual YouTube Live layout before going live. Keep the code and payment instructions clear without covering the product, and confirm the payee details match your shop. You can also use YouTube Shopping product tags if your channel and products are eligible; they are a separate, complementary checkout route.
1. Get the correct merchant QR
- Download the QR from your payment app or merchant provider. Use the seller’s own merchant code; do not rebuild payment details from memory or use a QR whose destination you have not verified.
- Check the payment destination. Confirm the displayed payee details identify the intended seller before adding the image to a public video. If the name or destination is wrong or unclear, get a corrected QR from the provider.
- Keep a clean source file. Use the provider’s original QR image where possible so the code is not softened by repeated screenshots, resizing, or compression.
NPCI’s BHIM-UPI Guidelines address merchant payments and QR scanning. They do not establish design rules for QR overlays in YouTube videos, so treat size and placement as production decisions to test rather than platform requirements.
2. Add the QR to the promo video
- Open the promo project in your video editor. Set the project to the aspect ratio and resolution you plan to stream. Add the QR image on a track above the product footage.
- Add a short call to action. For example, tell viewers to scan to pay and identify what the payment is for. Keep the product name, offer or price, and QR visually distinct so the payment code does not compete with the item being shown.
- Choose a placement that preserves the product view. A full-screen QR card can make the code prominent but interrupts the demonstration; a small persistent corner code keeps the product visible but may be difficult to scan. Neither layout is established as universally better. Preview both at the intended playback size.
- Allow viewers arriving at different times to see the offer. Repeat the QR card or call to action at useful intervals, but use the intervening time for meaningful product information, narration, demonstrations, or answers to common questions. Repetition alone is not proof of a policy violation; the concern is content that is generic, mass-produced, repetitive, or lacking distinct value.
- Export and inspect the result. Watch the exported file at the size your audience is likely to use. Check that the QR edges remain clear, the payment prompt is readable, and no other graphic covers the code.
There is no sourced universal minimum QR size, display duration, contrast ratio, or scan-success rate for a YouTube overlay. Verify scanability on the actual encoded video and in the YouTube player on likely viewer devices rather than relying on the editor preview alone.
3. Check the stream layout before publishing
- Load the export into your planned streaming setup and inspect it in the streaming software preview or YouTube Live preview, with the other overlays, labels, and product graphics in place.
- Check at realistic viewing scale. Look at the preview on a phone and any other screen commonly used by your audience. Make sure the code is not cropped, hidden by interface elements, or too small once the full stream layout is visible.
- Test the payment route before launch. Use an appropriate test process with your payment provider, if available, and confirm the displayed payee before publishing. Do not ask viewers to pay a code you have not verified.
- Consider viewers watching on the phone they would scan with. If your provider supports it, explain an alternative such as saving the QR image or scanning from a second device. Do not imply that every payment app supports the same flow.
4. Choose an external QR, YouTube product tags, or both
A UPI QR and YouTube Shopping tags solve related but different problems. The QR directs a viewer to an external payment flow; product tags provide a native product-discovery route for eligible creators and items. YouTube does not document conversion performance for these approaches, so choose based on your eligibility, checkout process, and the viewing experience you can verify.

YouTube’s Shopping guidance explains product tagging, but tags are not universally available and may be hidden in some circumstances. Do not build the promotion around tags until you have checked your current Studio options.
5. Follow YouTube’s promotion and monetization policies
External payment destinations
YouTube’s external links policy covers ways of directing viewers off YouTube, including destinations shown or referenced in video and live content. Use a legitimate payment destination, and do not direct viewers to prohibited, misleading, or phishing destinations.

Originality in a repeated promo loop
YouTube says monetized videos, including live streams, should be original and authentic. A loop should provide distinct useful information—such as product demonstrations, specifications, or changing narration—rather than relying on interchangeable templates. Repetition by itself does not establish that a stream violates policy. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

6. Plan the shop stream around the promotion
Decide the stream’s purpose, structure, pace, product selection, and order before going live. YouTube recommends that shopping live streams run for at least 30 to 60 minutes; that is guidance, not a promise of results or a requirement for every promotion. Its live-shopping tips also report that 89% of viewers agreed YouTube creators give recommendations they can trust, based on Google/Talk Shoppe’s U.S. study of 2,000 adults aged 18–64 who used video, conducted in August 2021. That finding concerns trust in recommendations, not QR scan rates or payment conversion.

Common problems and fixes
- The QR looks clear in the editor but is hard to scan in the stream. Inspect the encoded export and the full YouTube preview at realistic size. Adjust its on-screen size or placement, then export and check again.
- The code competes with the product or offer. Separate the QR from the product identity and price, or use a brief full-screen card between demonstrations instead of covering important product detail.
- The payment destination is not the intended seller. Stop publication and obtain a verified merchant QR from the payment app or provider; do not try to reconstruct the payment data yourself.
- Product tags are missing. Check channel and product eligibility, territory, shipping, rights, and video status in YouTube Studio. Use the QR route only if it is suitable and verified; do not assume tags are available to every channel.
- The loop feels repetitive or low in information. Add genuinely distinct demonstrations, product details, or narration. Do not rely on swapping only a product name or image across otherwise interchangeable segments.
