There is no evidence-based, universal best Indian data center region for a Raspberry Pi relay to YouTube. The right choice is the region that provides the services you need and delivers the most stable route from your actual Pi network to YouTube’s ingest endpoint at your chosen stream settings. Treat location as a shortlist filter, then compare candidates with repeatable tests.
What to compare before choosing a region
A relay that forwards an already encoded stream has different needs from a cloud host that also encodes or transcodes it. First establish the relay’s role and list the instance, network, storage, and any managed streaming services it requires. The Pi model, relay software, resolution, bitrate, and whether encoding happens in the cloud all affect that list; none should be assumed from the fact that a Raspberry Pi is involved.
Compare candidates across six factors:
- Route latency: measure from the Pi’s real access network to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Sustained upload capacity: check that the route can carry the stream continuously, not just during a short speed test.
- Interruptions and loss: record drops or instability during a representative run.
- YouTube stream health: monitor the Live Control Room’s health indicators at the target settings.
- Service and account availability: verify that the exact instance or managed service is offered in the region and enabled for your account.
- Cost and resilience: compare total operating cost and the recovery or redundancy options you need.
Geographic closeness may help narrow the list, but it does not prove that a provider’s route to YouTube will be better. No reviewed source ranks Indian regions for this specific Pi-to-YouTube path; the winner depends on the origin ISP, routing, endpoint behavior, and measurement time.
Indian regions to shortlist
These are provider-listed locations, not a performance ranking. Availability of a region does not mean every instance family or service is available there.
#1 Best Overall

| Provider and location | Region identifier or scope | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Mumbai | ap-south-1 |
Confirm the required service and instance are currently available for your account. |
| AWS Hyderabad | ap-south-2 |
AWS marks Hyderabad as opt-in; check account eligibility and service availability. |
| Azure Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad | Microsoft’s August 6, 2026 announcement describes these four India regions, including India South Central in Hyderabad as generally available. | Confirm the exact service and deployment options in the intended region. The announcement does not compare route performance. |
| Google Cloud Mumbai | asia-south1, listed for the Live Stream API |
Do not infer that this product-specific location listing applies to every Google Cloud service. For Live Stream API, Google advises considering latency, cost, and resiliency, and placing its input endpoint, channel, and Cloud Storage bucket close together. |
Provider region lists and service availability can change. Before committing, check current service availability, account access, instance types, and pricing for the exact deployment. Pricing is not established here.
Benchmark each candidate from the Pi’s real network
- Fix the test configuration. Keep the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate identical across regions. Otherwise, you will be comparing configuration changes as well as locations.
- Use the intended YouTube ingest endpoint. Test from the network the Pi will actually use, not from a different office, home connection, or generic cloud speed-test location.
- Measure the route and sustained transfer. Record route latency, sustained upload throughput, and any packet loss, interruptions, or connection drops over a representative stream run. A brief speed test or geographic distance alone is not enough.
- Run a representative YouTube test stream. Use realistic movement and audio, and monitor stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before an event and choosing a quality the connection can sustain.
- Repeat at representative times. A result at one hour is not proof of stability at the times the stream will run. Keep the test conditions and settings consistent.
- Compare cost and resilience among candidates that pass. Select the lowest-cost region that meets your measured stability and recovery requirements. If using Google Cloud Live Stream API, follow Google’s guidance to keep its input endpoint, channel, and storage bucket close together.
- Re-test when conditions materially change. Repeat the comparison after a provider, route, or YouTube ingest change that could affect the path.
Set the stream up for a fair, stable comparison
Allow upload headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Apply that margin to the upload capacity you can sustain, not a momentary peak. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup.

Choose the ingest protocol for the workflow
For ordinary live content, YouTube documents RTMPS as a secure RTMP path and a good choice, especially when low latency matters. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 to a valid YouTube ingest endpoint. HLS is also supported, but it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Google recommends HLS media segments of one to four seconds; shorter segments can lower latency while increasing rebuffer risk and reducing encoding efficiency. Choose HLS for a supported workflow or codec need, not on the assumption it will make the relay lower-latency.
Keep viewer latency separate from relay route latency
YouTube defines stream latency as the time from camera capture to viewer playback. Its help guidance says most viewers of low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds, and most viewers of ultra-low-latency streams experience less than five seconds. Those are viewer-experience figures, not guarantees for a cloud region or measurements of the Pi-to-ingest route. Ultra-low latency reduces the playback buffer, which can expose network or encoder problems as buffering, and it is unavailable for 4K. Do not use a viewer-latency setting as a substitute for measuring the relay route.

Common decision mistakes
- Picking the closest-looking region: proximity is only a screening clue. Measure the actual route and stream health from the Pi’s network.
- Choosing from a generic speed test: a test to a different destination may not reflect sustained capacity to YouTube ingestion. Run the real stream and observe health.
- Changing settings between regional trials: different bitrate, protocol, codec, or frame rate makes the results hard to attribute. Hold them constant.
- Assuming a provider region means the needed service is there: check instance or managed-service availability and account eligibility for the precise region.
- Confusing viewer latency with route quality: viewer playback delay and Pi-to-ingest route performance are different measurements.
- Testing only once: routes and conditions vary. Repeat at the times and conditions relevant to the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to managing a Pi relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
