OBS YouTube Stream Drops Frames Only When the Media Playlist Advances: How to Diagnose It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS reports dropped frames at the moment YouTube’s HLS media playlist advances, the timing is a useful clue—but it does not prove the playlist update caused the drop. First check which OBS statistic changed. Network dropped frames point to the connection or ingest path; rendering and encoding lag point to different parts of your streaming setup.

First identify which OBS counter changes

Open View → Stats in OBS and watch the counters during the event. Do not diagnose a network problem from a choppy preview or a viewer’s report alone.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): OBS frames failed to reach the destination. OBS describes this as an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate.
  • Frames Missed due to Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to render or composite the scene, often because the GPU is under load.
  • Skipped Frames due to Encoding Lag: OBS cannot encode frames on time. Investigate encoder load and available system resources rather than assuming a network or playlist fault.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. It says OBS Studio itself is an extremely unlikely cause of network dropped frames. That guidance makes the counter an important first distinction, not a diagnosis of this particular HLS timing pattern.

What a YouTube HLS playlist advance means

HLS sends video in segments rather than as one continuous stream like RTMP, so playlist updates are part of its normal operation. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions specify 1–4 second segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. They also specify TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. These are YouTube ingest requirements; they do not establish that a playlist refresh should make OBS drop frames.

YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR streaming or codecs that RTMP does not support. Its HLS instructions list H.264 and HEVC support, and note HLS has higher latency because it uses segments. Choose a protocol that meets your codec and stream requirements; do not change HLS segment settings merely because drops coincide with a playlist update.

Capture a reproducible test before changing settings

  1. Record the setup: note your OBS version and operating system, encoder, codec, protocol (HLS or RTMP/RTMPS), configured bitrate, and any segment settings you can configure.
  2. Watch the right counter: open View → Stats. Record the timestamp of the playlist advance and the timestamp and type of any counter increase. A viewer-side buffer or a stuttering preview is not by itself proof that OBS dropped network frames.
  3. Use a low-risk stream: reproduce the issue on an unlisted or otherwise low-risk test stream. Keep the scene, encoder, bitrate, and other relevant settings the same, and stream long enough to observe the reported event.
  4. Save an OBS log: retain the log from the test. OBS requests logs for connection troubleshooting because they contain useful diagnostic information. Compare the log’s timing with your Stats observations.
  5. Compare ingest paths: if compatible with your codec and streaming requirements, repeat the test using RTMP/RTMPS instead of HLS. Keep the other settings steady. If possible, also test another available YouTube ingest server.

If changing protocols or servers changes the result, that narrows the problem to a path or configuration difference; it does not, by itself, prove a defect in playlist advancement. The available OBS and YouTube documentation does not identify this exact symptom as a confirmed OBS bug.

If the Network Dropped Frames counter rises

Treat this first as a connection-stability or bitrate-capacity problem, even if the counter tends to rise during playlist advances. Make one change at a time so the comparison remains useful.

  • Check sustainable upload capacity: compare your configured bitrate with the upload capacity your connection can reliably sustain, including competing household or game traffic. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; actual stable capacity and YouTube’s limits still apply.
  • Try a different ingest server or path: test another available YouTube server, then compare HLS with RTMP/RTMPS when suitable. OBS also recommends testing another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison.
  • Reduce bitrate for a controlled test: if a lower bitrate stops the network counter rising, the connection may not reliably sustain the original setting. Lower bitrate can reduce image quality.
  • Check the local network: if you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. Check whether a VPN, security product, or network-prioritization software is interfering, and inspect network drivers, modem/router, cable, and other hardware if there are reasons to suspect them. A cable is worth testing only when the connection setup gives you reason to; it is not an established explanation for a playlist-timed drop.
  • Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback: OBS can lower bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames. OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying connection issue and can reduce video quality.

These steps follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance. Avoid changing several network and encoder settings at once: doing so may stop the symptom without showing what mattered.

If rendering or encoding lag rises instead

Rendering lag

Rendering lag is a local scene/GPU performance issue, not evidence that YouTube’s playlist update caused a network loss. Keep the test scene consistent and inspect GPU load, especially if a game is running alongside OBS. OBS’s encoding performance guide recommends limiting a game’s frame rate, simplifying scenes, reducing filters, and limiting resource-heavy browser sources where appropriate. Reducing output resolution or frame rate can also reduce load.

Encoding lag

If skipped encoding frames rise, investigate encoder overload and available system resources. Test a less demanding output resolution or frame rate if needed, changing one setting at a time. A successful network counter does not rule out an encoding bottleneck, and switching HLS settings is not the first response to an encoding-lag counter.

How to compare HLS and RTMP/RTMPS fairly

A useful comparison changes the ingest path while preserving the rest of the test as closely as possible. Record the results rather than relying on whether one short attempt looked smoother.

What to hold or record Why it matters
OBS counter that changes Separates network drops from rendering or encoding lag.
Protocol and ingest server Shows whether the result tracks HLS versus RTMP/RTMPS, or a particular server path.
Encoder, codec, and bitrate Prevents codec or bitrate changes from being mistaken for a protocol effect. YouTube’s HLS instructions list HEVC support in addition to H.264.
Scene and game load Keeps GPU and rendering demand from confounding a network comparison.
Event timestamps and log Lets you check whether the counter change actually coincides with playlist advancement and whether the pattern repeats.

An OBS forum thread begun August 20, 2023 reports one user’s concern about dropped frames during YouTube HLS with HEVC, particularly above 15,000 bitrate, alongside a report of better results on RTMP. It is an anecdotal user report, not a verified diagnosis, current defect confirmation, or proof of this exact playlist-advance symptom. The discussion is available at OBS’s HLS dropped-frames thread.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Observed symptom What to check next
Network dropped frames rise at the event Test stable upload capacity, a lower bitrate, another ingest server, and the local network; compare a compatible RTMP/RTMPS test.
Rendering lag rises Check GPU/game load, scene complexity, filters, and browser sources; reduce rendering demand.
Encoding lag rises Check encoder load and system resources; test lower output demands.
Viewers report buffering but OBS counters stay clear Do not label it an OBS network drop without evidence. Viewer-side buffering can result from the viewer’s network or device even when OBS reports no dropped frames.
The problem disappears on another protocol or server Record that the result depends on the tested path or configuration. It does not isolate playlist implementation as the cause without a log-backed reproduction of that mechanism.

Or let it run in the cloud

This is not a fix for diagnosing OBS’s playlist-timed drops. If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream without leaving a home PC running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
