Repeated buffering is a symptom, not proof that your bitrate is too high or that you need new equipment. First find out who is affected: one viewer, several people on the same network, or viewers across unrelated networks. Then check YouTube’s Live Control Room, the encoder output, and the broadcaster’s outbound connection in that order.

YouTube does not publish a separate encoder profile for 24/7 ambient streams. Use its general live-streaming recommendations and the health messages for your own stream to locate the problem.

1. Find out who is buffering

Ask affected viewers whether the problem occurs for everyone, and whether the affected viewers share a home, school, workplace, or other network. Compare their reports with your own playback. This is the quickest way to separate an individual playback problem from a broadcaster-side issue.

  • One viewer: YouTube says the viewer’s device or internet connection is a likely cause. Have them try another device or connection, and compare playback there.
  • Several viewers on one shared network: investigate that network’s capacity and health. Multiple simultaneous streams need corresponding inbound capacity. YouTube’s example says 10 people watching 10 streams require 10 times the inbound network speed; this illustrates the scaling, not a universal bandwidth guarantee.
  • Viewers on different networks: investigate the stream and broadcaster side. Check Live Control Room messages, inspect what the encoder is actually sending, and then test outbound connectivity if the encoder output looks healthy.

These patterns are clues, not definitive diagnoses. A healthy-looking local preview alone does not rule out an outbound connection problem.

  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

2. Check YouTube’s live health messages

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the broadcast and review the Health Indicator and any errors beside it. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance explains how to investigate common stream problems. Its configuration guidance warns that an excessively long keyframe interval can cause buffering.

YouTube’s API documentation describes one insufficient-ingestion message this way: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.” Treat the actual message as evidence about what YouTube is receiving; it is more useful than changing settings blindly.

3. Verify the encoder settings

Compare the values selected in your encoder with the recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations vary by those choices, so there is no single bitrate that fixes every stream.

TP-Link Deco S4 Mesh AC1900 WiFi System, Deco S4(3-Pack)
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
  • Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
  • Keyframe interval: set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Confirm the encoder’s actual setting rather than assuming its default is appropriate.
  • Bitrate: choose a value within YouTube’s recommendation for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate, and that the stable outbound upload can sustain. Do not raise bitrate as a general response to buffering.
  • Resolution and frame rate: verify that the selected output matches what you intend to send and what your connection can maintain. If the connection cannot reliably carry the current settings, reduce output demands and reassess stream health.
  • Codec: confirm that the encoder is using a codec supported by YouTube and a bitrate recommendation for that codec.

A bitrate recommendation is a configuration target, not a guarantee that an unstable connection will deliver continuously. For YouTube’s current general guidance, see recommended settings for live encoders.

4. Check what the encoder is producing

Inspect the encoder’s outgoing stream directly. YouTube recommends checking the stream’s appearance and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, and any local archive recording. Update the encoder software if it is out of date.

  • If the encoder output or local recording is also defective, inspect the media source, playback, encoder configuration, and available processing capacity before blaming viewers’ connections.
  • If the encoder output looks and sounds normal, continue to the outbound connection test. The local preview does not prove that the connection to YouTube is stable.

For a YouTube-led sequence of encoder checks, use its troubleshooting guide.

5. Test the broadcaster’s outbound connection

Measure upload performance from the network carrying the stream, not just download speed. YouTube says the outbound connection must support the stream bitrate, including a primary and backup stream where both are being sent, and recommends 20% headroom. A speed test is only a snapshot; observe YouTube’s stream health while buffering is happening, because one result does not establish stability over a continuous broadcast.

  1. Check that available, stable upload capacity can carry the configured stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  2. If a primary and backup stream are both in use, include both in the outbound capacity assessment.
  3. Watch the Live Control Room health messages during the affected period and compare them with encoder connection errors or dropped frames.
  4. If tests show a connection problem, contact your internet provider. YouTube’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the ISP when the connection is at fault.

A wired connection may be worth checking when diagnosing local network reliability, but a new cable is not a universal cure. YouTube’s connection guidance includes unplugging an Ethernet cable as part of testing encoder failover; that does not establish that buying a particular cable will resolve buffering.

6. If you use OBS, check dropped frames

This section applies to OBS users. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Dropped frames concern the encoder-to-ingest path; viewer buffering can also occur without OBS reporting dropped frames.

  • Compare OBS’s dropped-frame and disconnect information with YouTube’s health messages at the time viewers report buffering.
  • If the connection cannot sustain the set bitrate, lower it to a value consistent with YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific recommendation and the stable upload you measured.
  • Check whether VPN software, security software, or network-prioritization utilities are interfering with the connection. OBS lists these as possible causes.

For OBS-specific symptoms and connection checks, consult OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and its stream buffering troubleshooting page.

7. Choose a latency mode suited to ambient video

For a non-interactive ambient stream, choose Normal latency in the stream’s YouTube settings. YouTube says Normal latency is best for non-interactive streams and gives viewers the lowest buffering risk. Low and Ultra-low latency reduce the delay for audience interaction, but give playback less read-ahead buffer; Ultra-low latency is intended for highly interactive streams and may increase buffering. See YouTube’s latency settings guidance.

Unless quick, real-time interaction is essential, the shorter delay of a lower-latency mode is generally a poor trade for a continuously playing ambient channel.

8. Help a viewer who is the only one affected

If the stream plays normally for other people and the problem is isolated to one viewer, ask them to work through these checks:

  1. Try the stream on another internet connection or playback device.
  2. Set the YouTube player quality manually rather than leaving it on Auto; test a lower quality if the connection cannot sustain the current one.
  3. Reopen or update the browser, then restart the device if the problem continues.
  4. For the YouTube app, clear its cache and test playback again.

YouTube includes device, connection, and playback checks in its troubleshooting guidance. If the problem follows the viewer across devices and networks, report that evidence alongside the stream’s health information rather than assuming an encoder fault.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream is made from uploaded ambient videos, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream looping from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
