You can keep a live camera feed from a physical Raspberry Pi on YouTube by running an encoder on the Pi and configuring it to reconnect when the connection drops. That is different from running a Raspberry Pi “in the cloud”: a prerecorded-video cloud service can loop uploaded files, but it is not automatically a relay for a live Pi camera. Choose the workflow that matches your source.
Choose the right setup for your video source
| Option | What it streams | What runs continuously |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Raspberry Pi encoder | A live camera or other input attached to the Pi | The Pi, encoder, network connection, and power supply |
| Managed cloud encoder | Uploaded prerecorded video, in the workflow documented by YouTube | The provider’s cloud playback and encoder service |
A cloud virtual machine running Linux could potentially host an encoder, but the sources cited here do not establish a standard Raspberry Pi-in-the-cloud deployment. A cloud service for looping uploaded videos should not be assumed to accept a live feed from a Pi camera.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room
- Enable live streaming for your channel. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings into your encoder configuration. Use the RTMPS server URL if you want the encrypted connection; do not assume a default RTMP URL is encrypted. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection in its RTMPS instructions.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and shared logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder configuration.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm that the incoming video and audio look right in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
Build a physical Raspberry Pi camera encoder
Hardware and software
A documented implementation uses a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Raspberry Pi OS Lite, FFmpeg and camera tooling, a network connection, and stable 5V power. Its camera options include a Raspberry Pi HQ Camera or a USB camera. These are that project’s choices, not universal minimum requirements or a guarantee that every camera and Pi configuration will work. See the YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine project for its configuration details.
- Place the Pi where the camera can capture the intended scene and where it can remain powered and connected.
- Use a stable network connection with enough upload capacity for the selected video settings.
- Install and configure an encoder appropriate to the camera, its device name, available codecs, audio source, and the Pi’s capabilities.
Configure startup and recovery
Configure the encoder to start automatically at boot, and arrange for it to retry after a connection loss. The cited Pi project documents a systemd service and reconnect attempts. Another unattended encoder project documents FFmpeg under systemd and recovery scenarios including a host reboot and camera loss: YouTube AutoEncoder. These are implementation examples, not evidence of guaranteed 24/7 uptime.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for every Pi and camera in the available documentation: device names, codecs, audio mapping, bitrate, and RTMP/RTMPS support vary by installation. Use the commands and configuration for your exact camera and encoder, then test the stream in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.
Loop prerecorded video in the cloud instead
If your source is prerecorded video rather than a live camera, a cloud encoder can play uploaded media and send an encoder feed to YouTube without a dedicated PC or camera. YouTube’s verified encoder listings include Gyre for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing does not establish support for relaying a live Pi camera.

Before choosing a provider, check supported media formats, current feature limits, account permissions, playback controls, monitoring and reconnect behavior, archive behavior, storage or transfer terms, and current total cost. No comparable price, latency, or uptime figures are established here.
Keep a nonstop stream within YouTube’s limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer nonstop broadcast will receive a complete archive, so do not rely on a continuous stream as the only recording of long-duration content. If preserving the video matters, maintain a separate recording or plan shorter broadcasts and confirm current YouTube behavior in Live Control Room.

Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A working encoder connection does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted music, game footage, or other material; review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for your channel and content.
Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a first broadcast: live streaming may not yet be activated. Enable it in YouTube and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder uses the server URL and key for the selected stream, that the key has not been changed, and that the Pi has network access. Verify that the camera device and encoder input match the actual installation.
- The connection works but video or audio is wrong: check the camera input, codec, audio mapping, and encoder settings. Preview the result in Live Control Room before leaving the setup unattended.
- The broadcast stops after a network or host interruption: confirm the service starts at boot and retries after a connection loss. Test recovery by restarting the encoder and checking whether the stream returns; retry logic cannot prevent power, source, network, or YouTube-side failures.
- The key may have been exposed: replace it in Live Control Room and update the local configuration. Do not publish the new key or include it in diagnostic logs.
- You expect a full archive of a very long broadcast: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; make separate recording arrangements for longer content.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded video—not a live feed from a Pi camera—StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
