An FFmpeg input read error means FFmpeg is having trouble reading its source; it does not, by itself, prove that YouTube is at fault. Capture the complete log around the first failure, identify the input protocol and source, then troubleshoot the input-read path separately from the output connection to YouTube. Apply reconnect options only when FFmpeg’s documentation supports them for that input protocol, and test the result while monitoring YouTube’s stream health.
First, identify which part of the stream is failing
“Input read error” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Its cause depends on what FFmpeg is reading—a local file, an HTTP source, a live network feed, a device or another input—and on the surrounding log. A phrase such as “24/7 YouTube radio station on repeat” describes the intended broadcast, not a specific FFmpeg failure mode.
Before changing the command, save the complete FFmpeg command and the log lines before and after the first error. Record the FFmpeg version or build, the input type and protocol, whether the process exits or hangs, and whether it continues producing output. The error wording alone does not establish a universal cause.
- Input-read branch: FFmpeg reports trouble reading the source. Investigate that source and its protocol.
- Output/ingest branch: The log instead reports output-write failures, a broken pipe or RTMP errors. Investigate the connection from FFmpeg to YouTube separately.
Keep both branches distinct: a problem reading the source is not automatically a YouTube ingest problem, and output trouble should not be treated as proof that the input failed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use reconnect options only for a matching HTTP input
For HTTP inputs, FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect controls for cases such as disconnections, network errors, selected HTTP errors and live streams reaching EOF. It also documents retry and delay limits and a socket I/O timeout. These are protocol-specific controls, not universal fixes for files, RTSP, devices or pipes.
- Confirm the input protocol and build. Check the input URL or source type and the installed FFmpeg version. Verify available options against that build’s help or documentation.
- Put applicable options in the input context. FFmpeg input options belong before the corresponding
-iinput. Do not copy HTTP options into a command for a different protocol and assume they apply. - Bound retries and delays. Choose limits appropriate to the source and how quickly you need to detect a persistent failure. The protocol reference documents retry bounds but does not prescribe one correct retry count or timeout for every 24/7 stream.
- Keep logs observable. During a representative run, check whether reconnects succeed, whether the source repeatedly returns errors or EOF, and whether packets resume. A retry loop can restore service after a transient disconnect, but it cannot repair a source that continually fails.
Reconnect behavior is recovery, not a root-cause fix. If the input repeatedly ends or stops delivering data, investigate why the source is unavailable instead of treating repeated retries as proof that the stream is healthy.

Check YouTube output and ingest independently
If the logs point to output rather than input, test the same source locally or send it to a non-YouTube destination when practical. During a test broadcast, inspect stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the intended stream, then choosing a quality the connection can reliably upload.
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and RTMPS. These are encoder and ingest recommendations; they may help validate the output configuration, but they are not a guaranteed cure for an FFmpeg input read error.

Do not apply DASH retry guidance to an RTMP stream
Google’s YouTube Live DASH encoding guide recommends a PUT timeout 500 milliseconds longer than the segment duration and randomized binary exponential backoff after failed segment uploads. It also says repeated upload failures should be signaled to the operator because they correspond to a failing broadcast. This advice is for DASH segment uploads—not a general recipe for FFmpeg HTTP input reads or RTMP output.
Avoid fixes that do not address the diagnosed path
- Do not add
-reas a generic live-input remedy. FFmpeg documents-reas equivalent to-readrate 1: it limits input reading to real-time speed. The FFmpeg command documentation warns that low read-rate settings on actual capture devices or live streams may cause packet loss. Pacing is not network-read recovery. - Do not guess at a timeout, retry count or bitrate. A value cannot be called a fix without logs that support that diagnosis. Match settings to the input protocol and the observed failure.
- Do not assume YouTube caused an input error. Check the source-read path first; use YouTube stream-health messages to evaluate the output/ingest path separately.
Verify recovery with a representative test
- Run the same source and relevant FFmpeg command long enough to observe the failure mode you are troubleshooting.
- Watch the FFmpeg log for the first error, whether recovery occurs, and whether output resumes. If the process exits, note that separately from a process that remains running without useful output.
- For a YouTube output test, monitor Live Control Room stream health and messages while using representative audio and movement.
- After any change, compare the new log and stream behavior with the original. If the input keeps failing, return to source availability and protocol diagnosis rather than increasing retries blindly.
When you want the broadcast to run without an FFmpeg machine at home
StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not repair an existing FFmpeg command or stream from a camera. The workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a home computer and connection do not need to stay on. It is YouTube-only.
