If your clips have audio and you want silence during the pause, add matching silence with apad. This filter-and-encode method gives you control over the gap; -stream_loop repeats input but does not create a pause.
Make a black pause between two clips
This example adds a two-second black picture and silence to each clip, then joins the video/audio pairs. It assumes each input has one video stream and one audio stream:
ffmpeg -i one.mp4 -i two.mp4 -filter_complex "[0:v]tpad=stop_mode=add:stop_duration=2:color=black[v0];[0:a]apad=pad_dur=2[a0];[1:v]tpad=stop_mode=add:stop_duration=2:color=black[v1];[1:a]apad=pad_dur=2[a1];[v0][a0][v1][a1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[outv][outa]" -map "[outv]" -map "[outa]" output.mp4The command adds padding after both clips, including the last one. For a loop, that may be useful if you also want a pause at the end before playback restarts. To have pauses only between clips, leave the final segment unpadded and adjust the filter graph so that only the earlier segments receive tpad and apad.
Adapt the command to your files
Check the streams first
The example expects one video and one audio stream in each input. Use ffprobe to inspect the actual stream layout before running it, then adapt the stream selectors and labels if a file has no audio, multiple audio tracks, or a different arrangement. The example is illustrative and has not been run against your files.

Choose black or a held frame
tpad can add solid-color frames or clone the last frame. The example uses stop_mode=add and color=black for a black gap. To hold the final image instead, use stop_mode=clone. See the FFmpeg 8.1 tpad API reference for the documented options.
Decide what audio should do
tpad affects video only; it does not silence audio. The example uses apad=pad_dur=2 to add two seconds of silence to each clip’s audio so the audio duration matches the visual pause. If you want audio to continue across the black picture, do not pad that audio segment with silence. FFmpeg documents the apad filter as a way to add silence, including in workflows that use -shortest to extend audio to video length.

Handle clips without audio
For video-only inputs, remove the audio apad branches and use a video-only concat filter, such as concat=n=2:v=1:a=0. Map only the resulting video output. If only some clips have audio, do not use the two-stream example unchanged: the concat inputs need to be set up consistently for the streams you intend to join.
Choose the right concatenation method
- Use the concat filter when adding a pause. The filter workflow builds the padding into each segment and re-encodes the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; see FFmpeg’s concatenating-video FAQ.
- Use the concat demuxer when you need stream copy and no inserted gap. It reads listed files sequentially without constructing a filter-based pause. Files must have matching streams, codecs, time bases, and other stream properties. The demuxer uses file durations to adjust timestamps, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts; streams of unequal length can also produce gaps. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation before relying on stream copy.
In short, a requested gap and a no-re-encode join are different goals: use padding plus the concat filter for the former, and consider the concat demuxer only when the files are compatible and no inserted pause is needed.

Loop the result without confusing repetition and pauses
-stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; it does not add a delay between clips. Build the pause in the filter graph, then use your chosen looping workflow separately. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes -stream_loop as an input option, with -1 meaning infinite repetition.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The command reports that an audio stream is missing: the example’s
[0:a]or[1:a]selector does not match that input. Confirm streams withffprobeand use the video-only graph if there is no audio. - The pause is silent when you expected sound:
apaddeliberately adds silence. Remove or alter the audio padding branch if audio should continue instead. - The last clip has a gap after it: both segments in the example are padded. Leave the final clip unpadded if the loop should restart immediately after it.
- The concat demuxer produces a glitch or an unexpected gap: check stream properties and duration metadata across the files. The demuxer depends on compatible streams and uses durations to adjust timestamps.
- The filter name or option is rejected: FFmpeg builds and documentation can change. Check your installed build’s filter support and its version-matched documentation; the online FFmpeg documentation is updated over time.
