One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo prepare a video playlist for OBS, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with stream copy when the clips have compatible streams; it joins them into one file without re-encoding. If their codecs, time bases, or other stream properties differ, normalize them or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which re-encodes. Then play the finished file as an OBS Media Source—or use OBS’s VLC Video Source when you need playlist controls. Neither method guarantees a smooth live stream: check the output, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and test YouTube’s live preview and stream health.
Choose: one combined file or an OBS playlist
FFmpeg is useful when you want to prepare several clips as one continuous media file. But it is not required simply to play a compatible video in OBS. Choose the playback route based on whether you need one prepared asset or playlist controls.
| Option | Best fit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg combined file + OBS Media Source | You want clips joined into one file before streaming. | Stream copy works only when the input streams are compatible. If they differ, normalize or re-encode first. |
| OBS VLC Video Source | You want OBS to play separate files as a playlist. | The VLC Video Source provides playlist controls and requires VLC to be installed. |
For the OBS source choices and setup, see OBS media sources. FFmpeg’s concat options are documented in its concat demuxer documentation.
Inspect the clips before joining them
Before choosing a command, check each clip’s video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, durations, frame sizes, frame rates, and audio layout. The concat demuxer expects matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration information can also create artifacts at clip boundaries.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the output of your media-inspection method to compare the files rather than assuming that a shared .mp4 extension means the streams are compatible. If you are unsure, use the re-encode route and inspect its result before streaming.
Combine compatible clips without re-encoding
When the clips expose matching streams, the concat demuxer can join their compressed packets without decoding and re-encoding. This is fast and avoids generational quality loss, but it does not normalize different inputs or apply filters.

- Create a plain-text file named
playlist.ffconcatalongside the clips. List the files in playback order, for example:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' file 'clip-03.mp4' - From the directory containing the list and clips, run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy combined.mp4 - Review the FFmpeg output for errors, then play
combined.mp4through its full duration. Check the joins for freezes, audio gaps, or synchronization changes. - In OBS, add a Media Source and select
combined.mp4.
The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each subsequent file follows the prior file’s duration. Use -safe 0 only when your list contains paths FFmpeg would otherwise reject as unsafe; keep the list and its media under your control. FFmpeg describes stream copy as useful for changing the elementary stream count, container format, or container-level metadata, not for repairing incompatible streams. See FFmpeg’s streamcopy documentation.
Re-encode when the clips are not compatible
If the inputs differ in important stream properties, first normalize them to a common target format and then concatenate the compatible outputs, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which is intended for cases that need re-encoding. The filter requires correctly mapped and synchronized streams, so a safe copy-paste command depends on the actual input stream layout and the target properties. There is no one resolution, frame rate, CRF, preset, or bitrate that is right for every source and machine.

- Choose a target resolution and frame rate deliberately. Preserve the source aspect ratio rather than stretching the picture.
- Do not expect upscaling to add detail that is not present in the source.
- Allow time and compute resources for encoding; unlike stream copy, re-encoding decodes and encodes the media.
- Afterward, play the output through the joins and check both audio/video synchronization and clip boundaries.
For a straightforward compatible file, remuxing and concatenating are different tasks. OBS’s File → Remux Recordings function converts OBS recordings to MP4; it is not a substitute for normalizing or concatenating arbitrary playlist clips.
Set up and test the YouTube live stream
A finished file that plays smoothly on your computer does not prove that the live stream will be smooth. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit your encoder and connection; YouTube says Live Control Room detects incoming encoder settings and transcodes the stream for viewer formats. Check the current guidance and settings in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Configure OBS’s live output to meet YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Start a test stream before the event. Check the YouTube live preview and stream-health indicators, not only OBS’s local playback.
- Watch the transition points between clips and listen for missing or misaligned audio while monitoring the live path.
Keep YouTube’s upload recommendations separate from its live encoder settings. For uploaded video, YouTube recommends formats and properties including MP4, H.264, supported audio such as AAC-LC, a 48 kHz sample rate, and retaining the frame rate used for recording. These are upload recommendations, not a universal recipe for an OBS live encoder. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the stream can buffer even when the file plays smoothly
Local playback does not depend on sending the same data continuously over your internet connection. YouTube says the total live-stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its advice is: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- If stream health degrades, compare OBS’s total output bitrate with the upload capacity actually available during the stream, not just a best-case connection result.
- If the bitrate leaves too little headroom, reduce the live output bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- If the live preview fails at clip joins but the file plays locally, re-check the encoded output’s boundaries, timestamps, and audio/video synchronization.
Troubleshooting FFmpeg, OBS, and YouTube
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports concat or stream errors | Inputs may not expose matching streams, or paths in the list may be invalid. | Check the codecs, time bases, stream layout, and file paths. Normalize or re-encode incompatible clips instead of trying to force stream copy. |
| Visible glitch, freeze, or audio gap at a join | Incompatible stream properties or inaccurate duration information can affect concat boundaries. | Check durations and stream properties; create normalized outputs or use the concat filter, then inspect the resulting joins and synchronization. |
| OBS does not play the separate-file playlist | The VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed, or the source may not be configured for the intended playlist. | Install VLC and check the OBS VLC Video Source playlist controls, or prepare one combined file and load it as a Media Source. |
| File playback is fine, but YouTube reports poor stream health | The available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or unstable for the total live bitrate. | Leave the recommended upload headroom, lower the live bitrate if needed, and test the complete path in YouTube Live Control Room. |
| Uploaded test video looks different from the live stream | Upload encoding recommendations and live encoder requirements serve different workflows. | Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for OBS output; do not treat upload settings as a universal live configuration. |
