To broadcast a pre-recorded video as a YouTube Live stream from a cloud VPS, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg on the VPS to send the file to YouTube in real time. The VPS control panel provisions and gives you access to the server; it does not replace YouTube Studio or upload the video directly into a live broadcast.

Before you start: check channel eligibility

YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet its stated minimum age of 16 to stream live. Check your channel’s access before preparing the VPS: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream and access to its YouTube Studio.
  • A cloud VPS you can administer. Its provider’s control-panel screens vary, so the exact provisioning path depends on the provider.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus the video file stored there.
  • Sufficient disk space and sustained outbound network capacity for the file and chosen stream bitrate. The sources do not establish a universal minimum VPS size; encoding method and bitrate affect resource needs.

Set up the stream and VPS

  1. Provision and access the VPS. Use your cloud provider’s control panel to create a Linux VPS in a region and network path suitable for your audience. Connect to it using the access method the provider supplies.
  2. Install FFmpeg and place the media file on the server. Use the package manager for your Linux distribution or a trusted current FFmpeg build. Confirm the file is present and that the installed build can read its container and codecs. Check available disk, CPU and outbound transfer capacity.
  3. Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live for immediate setup, or use Manage → Schedule Stream to prepare an event. Choose its title, privacy and schedule. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming and let viewers choose notifications. See YouTube’s encoder and scheduling guide and stream settings.
  4. Copy the stream’s ingest URL and key. In Live Control Room’s Stream settings, copy the URL and key for this stream. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint: YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted version of RTMP. Use the lock icon to reveal the secure URL, and copy the endpoint shown for your stream rather than guessing it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  5. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your stream. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, log or source repository. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings.

Choose media and encoder settings

Use settings that match both the media and the VPS’s sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed 4 seconds). Its recommended H.264 examples are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p60; consult the full YouTube encoder-settings table for the row matching your codec, resolution and frame rate. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the rate.

There are two practical approaches to the media itself:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Stream-copy: send compatible existing audio and video without re-encoding. This can reduce CPU work when the file’s codecs and parameters fit the selected stream settings.
  • Transcode: encode the media to chosen output settings. This offers more control, but increases CPU demand. Confirm the VPS can handle the encoding workload before relying on it.

These are technical trade-offs, not VPS benchmark results. If you are unsure, test the actual file and settings on an unlisted stream before an event.

Run FFmpeg on the VPS

FFmpeg documents the real-time file-to-RTMP pattern as:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream

For YouTube, replace myfile with the media path and use the exact ingest endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room, using syntax supported by the installed FFmpeg build. Do not publish a command containing a real key. Verify that your build supports the protocol you intend to use, especially RTMPS; not every FFmpeg build supports it. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMPS as a way to stream multimedia across an encrypted connection.

The -re option reads the input at real-time speed rather than sending a file as fast as possible. For a single scheduled event, send the file once. Add looping only if you deliberately want the program to repeat; an indefinite loop is not required for a one-time broadcast.

Preview, go live and monitor

  1. Start the encoder ahead of the event. YouTube’s live-stream tips suggest setting up the encoder at least 2 hours in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not mandatory lead times. See YouTube live-stream tips.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the expected video and audio arrive, then click Go live for a scheduled encoder stream when the preview is ready. The encoder connection alone does not substitute for this launch step.
  3. Monitor the broadcast. Watch for dropped connection or stream-health warnings, and check that picture and sound remain correct throughout. YouTube’s tips also describe testing encoder failover, but the sources do not establish that every VPS or provider panel supports a backup setup.
  4. End the stream cleanly. End it in YouTube Live Control Room and stop FFmpeg on the VPS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after ending.

Copyright, reused content and monetization

A live encoder connection does not grant permission to use the media. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check music, game footage, cutscenes, overlays and other included material. A stream may face copyright enforcement even when its source file plays correctly. YouTube monetization is not automatic: access depends on YouTube’s eligibility and program rules.

For gaming channels, distinguish your own gameplay and commentary from third-party trailers, soundtrack recordings or long unedited sequences. Review rights for every track and clip in the file before streaming; a successful unlisted test only checks delivery, not whether you have broadcast rights.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube receives no signal: check that FFmpeg is running, the file path is correct, and the URL and key were copied from the intended stream. Confirm outbound network access and protocol support in the installed FFmpeg build.
  • The stream connects but preview is wrong or silent: inspect the file’s video and audio tracks and confirm FFmpeg is reading the intended input. Test the actual media on an unlisted stream before the scheduled event.
  • Stream health reports instability: compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate, then check the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. A nominal VPS plan does not by itself establish that its network path can sustain the stream.
  • The secure endpoint does not work: verify that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room, not an assumed endpoint.
  • The key may have leaked: reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings and update the encoder configuration with the replacement. Remove the exposed copy where possible.
  • The event is not live after FFmpeg starts: inspect the Live Control Room preview and use its Go live control when required for the scheduled encoder stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded video without maintaining FFmpeg on your own VPS, StreamNeo handles the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
