YouTube livestreamers can earn through ads, channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Shopping, and YouTube Premium; after a stream, eligible videos may also earn Super Thanks. Which tools a creator can use depends on YouTube Partner Program (YPP) access, location, channel status, content, and each feature’s rules. YouTube’s published revenue shares describe specific revenue bases—they do not predict what an individual streamer will earn.

How do livestreamers make money on YouTube?

Live creators can combine several YouTube monetization routes, but they work differently: some rely on advertisers, some on direct viewer purchases, and others on commerce or Premium viewing. A feature being available to YPP creators does not mean it is available to every channel, country, or stream.

Route Who or what generates the revenue Live-specific? How payment works
Ads Advertisers Ads may run around eligible livestreams; not guaranteed for every viewer or stream Revenue share under the Watch Page Monetization Module
Channel memberships Viewers No; memberships support a channel and its content Recurring monthly payments for creator-defined perks
Super Chat and Super Stickers Viewers in live chat Yes; available during livestreams and Premieres One-time purchases that make a chat message stand out or surface an animated sticker
YouTube Shopping Product sales No; commerce can be associated with eligible creator content May involve a creator’s own store or eligible third-party product promotion; availability and terms vary
YouTube Premium Premium subscription revenue allocation No; depends on Premium subscribers watching content Creators may receive a portion under applicable rules and modules
Super Thanks Viewers No; it applies to eligible Shorts and long-form videos, including a post-stream video where eligible One-time purchase that adds an animation and highlighted comment

YouTube lists these routes across its monetization overview and live-stream guidance: How to earn money on YouTube and Tips on how to make money on YouTube – Live.

How many subscribers do you need to monetize?

YouTube’s current monetization page describes two YPP access levels. The earlier level opens certain fan-funding and shopping features, subject to each feature’s additional conditions. It is not the same as qualifying for Watch Page or Shorts Feed advertising revenue. Thresholds and regional availability can change; check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s live eligibility pages before relying on them.

YPP level Threshold listed by YouTube Features listed
Earlier access to selected features 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping, subject to additional requirements
Higher threshold including ad revenue 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, memberships, Supers, Super Thanks, and YouTube Premium, subject to applicable rules

These are the thresholds listed on YouTube’s monetization feature page, reviewed October 3, 2026. YouTube reviews channels; meeting a threshold alone does not guarantee acceptance or access to every feature. Paid advertising campaign views and watch time do not count toward the thresholds. See YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility.

What does each monetization option mean for a livestreamer?

Ads: potentially useful, but not predictable

Eligible YPP creators can earn from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page. Ads may be served on livestreams, but channel eligibility, content suitability, ad availability, and whether a viewer is served an ad all affect the result. Do not treat an ad break or a live audience size as a fixed payout formula. YouTube says ad monetization is subject to its policies, including advertiser-friendly content rules, which apply to live streams as well as other video formats: YouTube channel monetization policies.

Memberships: recurring viewer support

Channel memberships let eligible viewers pay monthly in exchange for perks the creator defines. They are a fan-funding product, not an automatic subscription for every viewer. YPP participation, age and location rules, applicable terms, and feature eligibility all matter. See YouTube Commerce Products monetization policies.

Super Chat and Super Stickers: paid participation in live chat

Super Chat lets a viewer pay to make a chat message stand out; Super Stickers are paid animated stickers surfaced in chat. These are live-chat fan-funding features for livestreams and Premieres, not general-purpose donations or crowdfunding. They require eligible creators and content, and are limited by country availability and YouTube’s terms. Chat or comments must be enabled. Examples of excluded video types include private, unlisted, age-restricted, made-for-kids, and fundraiser videos. The precise rules and availability are in YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers eligibility, availability, and policies.

Shopping: commerce, not a guaranteed creator payment

Eligible creators may connect their own store or, where available and eligible, promote third-party products through YouTube Shopping. Participation and availability vary, so a streamer should check the channel’s Earn area and applicable commerce terms rather than assume product tagging or affiliate features are enabled.

YouTube Premium: revenue tied to Premium viewing

Creators may receive part of a Premium subscription fee when Premium subscribers watch their content, subject to YouTube’s modules and rules. It is a separate revenue route from ads and viewer purchases; the amount is not a fixed payment per livestream.

Super Thanks: support after the live moment

Super Thanks is a one-time purchase on eligible Shorts or long-form videos that gives the viewer an animation and highlighted comment. It is not a live-chat tool, but may be relevant to an eligible replay or other video published around a stream.

What revenue share does YouTube publish?

YouTube’s earnings overview, reviewed in 2026, states the following shares under different modules. The percentages have different bases and should not be compared as if they were percentages of the same gross amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Module or revenue type Published share What the percentage applies to
Commerce Product Module 70% of net revenues Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks
Watch Page Monetization Module 55% of net revenues Ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page
Shorts Monetization Module 45% of allocated revenue The creator’s allocation based on their share of views from the Shorts Creator Pool

These are module-specific terms, not a forecast of a creator’s take-home income. YouTube states that its partner agreement does not guarantee how much, or whether, a creator will be paid. Actual revenue depends on factors such as viewer purchases, ad serving, eligible viewing, and the creator’s applicable agreements. See YouTube partner earnings overview.

What can prevent a stream from earning?

  • YPP or feature access: The channel may not meet the relevant threshold, may not be accepted into YPP, or may not satisfy a feature’s own requirements.
  • Location or account conditions: Country availability, age, account standing, and the applicable terms or module can affect access.
  • Content restrictions: Some formats or settings disable features. For example, Super Chat and Super Stickers have exclusions, and chat/comments must be on.
  • Advertiser suitability: A stream can be subject to advertiser-friendly guidelines; eligibility for ads does not guarantee ads will appear.
  • Rights and policy concerns: Content must comply with YouTube’s monetization and other applicable policies. Review the channel monetization policies and the relevant feature rules rather than assuming a live broadcast is exempt.

For Supers, YouTube also places legal responsibility on the creator; whether a payment has particular legal or tax treatment depends on applicable law. Tax obligations depend on where you live and your circumstances, so consult your local tax authority or a qualified adviser rather than treating platform revenue as tax advice.

How should a creator build a practical income mix?

  1. Check eligibility first. Open YouTube Studio’s Earn area and confirm which modules and individual features are available to your channel and country.
  2. Enable only what you can support. For memberships, define perks you can consistently deliver. For live chat purchases, make sure chat is enabled and explain what a Super Chat or Sticker does without promising a response or outcome.
  3. Make the stream suitable for its audience and advertisers. Review live content for rights, policy, and advertiser-friendly issues. A stream’s length or view count alone does not guarantee ad delivery or revenue.
  4. Use the replay deliberately. If you publish an eligible replay or edited video, it may have video-based options such as ads or Super Thanks; these are distinct from live-chat features.
  5. Track actual outcomes, not headline percentages. Compare revenue sources in YouTube Analytics over time, accounting for audience size, viewing, ad delivery, and purchases rather than extrapolating from YouTube’s share rates.

Keep a YouTube livestream running without leaving a computer on

If your format is prerecorded video played as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a monetization feature. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the service loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This does not turn camera broadcasts into uploads, and it is for YouTube only. StreamNeo details are at streamneo.com.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
