To send a prerecorded file to YouTube Live through Wowza Streaming Engine, publish the file as a live source, configure a YouTube Live stream target, and set viewer latency separately in YouTube Live Control Room. Wowza’s live-lowlatency setting changes how Wowza handles incoming RTMP frames; it does not select YouTube’s playback latency mode. There is no established end-to-end delay figure for this exact workflow, so test the finished setup rather than relying on a promised number.
How the two latency settings differ
There are two independent controls to consider:
- Wowza Streaming Engine: the application’s stream type controls Engine-side handling. Wowza describes
live-lowlatencyas an RTMP mode that reduces frame buffering on receipt from the encoder and is intended for one-to-one or one-to-few audio/video chat. It is not a setting for YouTube’s viewer playback mode. See Wowza’s low-latency configuration guide and Application.xml stream-type reference. - YouTube Live: the latency choice in Live Control Room determines the viewer-facing playback experience. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay from capture to presentation; for a prerecorded file sent as a live feed, this setting still governs YouTube playback, even though the original content was not captured live. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
Changing Wowza’s stream type does not change the YouTube mode, and selecting a faster YouTube mode does not alter Wowza’s input buffering. Configure the relevant controls on both sides, then verify the actual stream.
Choose a YouTube latency mode
| YouTube mode | Best fit | Published guidance and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams where stability and quality matter more than quick replies. | YouTube describes this as the mode with the lowest viewer buffering among its latency options. It supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Streams with limited audience interaction. | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. It does not support 4K, and less read-ahead buffer makes playback more sensitive to network and player conditions. |
| Ultra-low | Streams where near-real-time audience interaction is central. | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 5 seconds. It does not support 4K and carries greater buffering risk; network ingestion problems can affect viewers more. |
The under-10-second and under-5-second figures are YouTube’s typical-outcome descriptions for most viewers, current at access in 2026; they are not measurements of a prerecorded-file-to-Wowza-to-YouTube setup. YouTube’s warning is direct: “Lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” If 4K is required, choose Normal latency. If interaction matters more, test Low or Ultra-low with the expected audience network conditions.
How to stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live with Wowza
- Create the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream, then copy the server URL and stream key from the stream’s settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to obtain these values and provide them to an encoder or streaming service.
- Publish the file from Wowza as a live source. Wowza’s basic documented approach enables
ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisheras a server listener. This publishes a VOD file repeatedly until the publisher is stopped. For scheduled playback or more dynamic sequences, Wowza points to scheduled streaming or server-side publishing workflows rather than treating the basic repeating-file method as a playlist scheduler. See Wowza’s file-as-live guide. - Add a YouTube Live stream target in Wowza. In the Wowza live application, configure the YouTube destination using the target host/application and destination stream name or key. Wowza’s guide describes sending the target over RTMP and checking its status after configuration. YouTube creates lower-bitrate renditions for adaptive playback. Follow the current Wowza YouTube target guide for the fields and interface applicable to your Engine version.
- Select YouTube viewer latency. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the event’s Stream or Manage view, then go to Stream Settings → Stream latency. Select Normal, Low, or Ultra-low according to the trade-offs above.
- Use compatible encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps; confirm that the codec is supported throughout your specific Wowza input and target configuration. Wowza’s technical specifications list RTMP input support for H.264 and AAC-family audio, which does not establish support for every codec or every possible target configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings and Wowza’s technical specifications.
- Set bitrate for the source format. Use YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p30; these are encoder guidance values for those specific formats, not universal settings. Match the bitrate to the actual source and confirm that the network can sustain it. The full YouTube bitrate table includes additional formats.
- Verify the delivery. Check that the Wowza stream target reports a successful push, then confirm that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the event. This confirms configuration and ingest, not a particular viewer delay.
Should you enable Wowza live-lowlatency?
Do not turn it on solely because the destination is YouTube or because the source is prerecorded. Wowza documents this stream type for reducing frame buffering on receipt from an RTMP encoder, especially for one-to-one or one-to-few interaction workflows. It is a distinct Engine-side behavior, not a general guarantee that the complete path to YouTube will be faster.

For the documented low-latency RTMP setup, change Streams/StreamType in the live application’s Application.xml to live-lowlatency, then restart Wowza Streaming Engine. Apply the change only where appropriate to the live application and verify the application starts and publishes correctly. Consult the Wowza setup guide and stream-type reference for the applicable configuration details.
How to measure actual delay
No cited source establishes end-to-end latency for a prerecorded file published through Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube Live. Wowza’s separate HLS latency discussion concerns Wowza Video and a different delivery path; its figures should not be applied to this workflow.

If a numeric target matters, test the real source, Engine deployment, YouTube latency mode, network path, and viewer player you intend to use. Compare a visible source-time marker with the time shown in the YouTube player, and repeat from representative viewer connections. Treat the result as specific to those conditions: a different player, connection, or ingest condition can change delay or buffering.
Common problems and fixes
- The Wowza target fails or YouTube preview is absent: check the stream URL, destination host/application, and stream key for the event. Confirm that the repeating publisher is running and that the Wowza target status indicates a successful push.
- Playback buffers after selecting Low or Ultra-low: YouTube warns that less playback buffer increases sensitivity to network and player conditions. Try Normal latency if stable playback is more important than rapid interaction, and verify the outgoing bitrate against the source format and available upload capacity.
- 4K is unavailable after changing latency: YouTube Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K. Select Normal latency if 4K is needed.
- The file repeats but you expected a changing program: the basic
ServerListenerStreamDemoPublishermethod loops a VOD file until stopped. Use a scheduled streaming or server-side publishing workflow for more dynamic playback. - Audio or video is rejected or missing: check the codec at each stage. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and supports its listed video codecs, while Wowza’s documented RTMP input specifications specifically list H.264 video and AAC-family audio; compatibility at one point does not guarantee every target path.
- The stream is live but latency is not the expected number: the YouTube mode’s typical figures are not guarantees for this exact chain. Measure the end-to-end path under the intended viewing conditions rather than infer a result from Wowza’s separate HLS documentation.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
A prerecorded file does not bypass YouTube’s rules for live streams. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check the channel and event settings before going live. Repeating a file also does not itself establish that a channel meets any separate YouTube eligibility or monetization requirements. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content before scheduling a recurring broadcast. Use this copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream check.
