Then add views, watch time and output-normalized rates—subscriber gains per published video and per live-stream hour—to understand the difference between total reach and conversion efficiency. These rates are calculations from your channel’s data, not official YouTube metrics or industry benchmarks.
Start with a matched-period comparison in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio > Analytics > Content and select the Subscribers report.
- Choose a date range that is identical for Live and Videos and long enough to reduce the influence of one unusually successful upload or stream.
- Compare subscriber gains for Live and Videos. Record views, watch time and the number of videos published during the same window.
- For a closer look or export, open SEE MORE or Advanced Mode, where YouTube says expanded reports let you examine specific data, make comparisons and export results.
YouTube describes this report as a way to understand “what content performs best at turning viewers into subscribers.” It also separates Shorts and posts, as well as an “Others” category that includes subscriptions from YouTube Search and the channel page. Keep those categories in mind if you are reconciling report totals with channel-wide changes.
Normalize for how much content each format had to work
A stream that runs all day has far more hours of exposure than a channel’s individual uploads. Raw totals answer which format was associated with more subscriber gains during the period; they do not show which format produced gains more efficiently for its amount of output.

The two normalized rates are complementary, not directly interchangeable: one is per video and the other per hour. Label them as your own calculations, not YouTube-defined metrics or universal benchmarks. A 24/7 stream can lead on total gains simply because it was available for more hours; that alone does not establish better conversion.

Use live metrics to explain exposure, not to count subscribers
For the Live format, record total hours streamed and, when useful, average and peak concurrent viewers. YouTube Studio reports channel-level average and peak concurrency and hours streamed; stream-specific concurrent-viewer metrics are also available. Concurrency describes viewers watching at the same time, not subscribers gained. Compare it alongside subscriber gains, views and watch time rather than treating it as a substitute for them.
For retrospective format comparisons, use processed YouTube Analytics. The Live Control Room is useful for monitoring a broadcast, but YouTube notes that its figures measure different information from Analytics; Analytics data is processed and despammed. A post-stream subscriber snapshot in the Live Control Room should not be treated as equivalent to the processed channel report.

Understand what subscriber attribution does—and does not—show
Channel-level subscriber gains are broader than subscriptions credited to an individual video. Google’s YouTube Analytics API documentation defines channel-level subscribersGained as including subscriptions across channel surfaces. When a report is restricted to a video, the video-level figure covers subscriptions from that video’s watch page. It does not capture every subscription a viewer may have made after encountering the content elsewhere.
That distinction matters when interpreting a format comparison: use the channel-level content-type report for the overall Live-versus-Videos view, and treat video-filtered figures as narrower attribution. Do not describe a video-filtered total as every subscriber who was influenced by that video.

Make the comparison fair for an Indian channel
- Use the same start and end dates for Live and Videos, and note the period in your report.
- Record the channel’s actual published-video count and streamed hours; do not compare raw gains without showing the difference in exposure.
- Include views and watch time so the subscriber results have viewing context.
- Use concurrency to describe live exposure, not as a subscriber count or conversion rate.
- Check whether your conclusion relies on channel-level or video-filtered attribution, and name the scope.
- Report your channel’s own results. YouTube’s cited help documentation explains how to inspect these metrics; it does not establish an India-specific expected growth rate or show that 24/7 streams generally outperform uploads.
