Neither OBS Studio nor FFmpeg has an established software-cost advantage for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Both are open-source tools; the real bill comes from the computer or cloud host, electricity, internet service, reliability measures and the time it takes to maintain the stream. No verified matched-hardware comparison establishes that FFmpeg uses less power than OBS. To find the cheaper option for your setup, measure the complete systems running the same stream and compare their full monthly costs.

What actually determines the cost?

Use this monthly cost model for either setup:

Host amortization or hosting charge + electricity + incremental internet charge + backup and reliability costs + operator time.

The software license does not settle the comparison. OBS describes itself as free and open source, with free commercial use subject to GPLv2 terms (OBS Help Portal; OBS Studio repository). FFmpeg is an open-source multimedia framework whose documentation describes its media-reading, filtering, encoding and output tools; that documentation does not establish a paid license fee as a differentiator (FFmpeg Documentation; FFmpeg All Documentation).

Hardware you already own

If you already have a suitable computer, its purchase price is sunk for a marginal comparison. Its extra power use, reliability and the cost of keeping it available still count.

A new computer or hosted instance

If you need to buy an always-on computer, include its purchase price and expected useful life as well as power use and compatibility. A mini PC with Intel Quick Sync is one hardware category to investigate, not a demonstrated cheapest choice: no particular model price or measured power use is established here. For cloud hosting, compare the charge for a compatible instance running for roughly 730 hours in a 30.4-day month, plus any network egress or service-limit costs. Actual provider prices depend on the configuration and provider.

Average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 hours × 30.4 days × your local electricity price per kWh.

Use a wall power meter or a trustworthy whole-system measurement while the real stream is running. CPU utilization alone is not an electricity measurement. GPU encoding, video decoding, scene composition, capture hardware, idle system draw and other running services can all affect power use. Local electricity rates vary, so there is no reliable universal monthly total.

Internet service and reliability

Your upload requirement depends on the resolution, frame rate and codec you choose; your ISP’s price and any usage charges depend on your location and plan. Include any incremental plan cost rather than assuming that the advertised bitrate has a standard monthly price. Also account for backup and recovery arrangements and the operator time needed to detect and fix interruptions.

What the two tools are suited to—and what that says about cost

Consideration OBS Studio FFmpeg
Typical workflow fit Useful when the stream needs scenes, capture sources, transitions and graphical controls. Can suit a fixed, scripted media playlist or loop.
Encoding and output Supports configurable encoders and streaming workflows; compatible choices depend on platform and hardware. Provides tools and controls for reading, filtering, encoding and outputting media; available hardware acceleration and encoders depend on the build and system.
License-cost distinction Free and open source; free commercial use is subject to GPLv2 terms, according to OBS. The reviewed FFmpeg documentation establishes no paid license fee as a cost distinction.
Relative electricity use on matched hardware Not established. Not established.

Workflow fit can influence setup effort and operator time, but it does not prove an electricity-cost winner. For a controlled comparison, keep the source, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, encoder and other running processes constant. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity (OBS System Requirements). Both the OBS and FFmpeg configuration should use the encoder and settings the intended stream will actually run.

OBS says hardware encoders can move encoding work off the CPU to a specialized component. Its documentation covers NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox with platform and hardware-generation qualifications. That is a performance and workload explanation—not proof that OBS costs less than FFmpeg, or vice versa (OBS Hardware Encoding). FFmpeg also documents encoder and hardware-acceleration controls, but available options and compatibility vary by system (FFmpeg All Documentation).

How to compare your OBS and FFmpeg setups fairly

  1. Choose the actual workload. Use the intended media or scene, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and audio configuration. Include capture devices and other processes that will run in the real setup.
  2. Match the output settings. Hold the source and encoder settings constant wherever the two configurations allow it. If they must differ, record the difference; otherwise you are comparing configurations, not just applications.
  3. Measure wall power. Record whole-system watts with a wall power meter or another trustworthy measurement while each setup streams. Allow enough time to represent normal operation rather than relying on a short idle reading.
  4. Monitor the broadcast as well as the meter. Note stream-health interruptions, restarts and failures during the measurement period. A low power figure is not a useful cost comparison if the stream does not remain healthy.
  5. Calculate the full monthly cost. Apply the electricity formula to the measured average; add host amortization or hosting, any incremental internet charge, reliability costs and operator time. Use your actual local rates and provider plan.
  6. Report what was tested. If the configurations use different computers, describe the result as a comparison of those systems, not evidence that one application inherently uses less power.

A fixed loop may be simpler to operate with a scripted FFmpeg workflow, while a stream built around scenes and graphical controls may be easier to manage in OBS. Choose based on the workflow you need, then measure the complete configuration. No named organization’s published statistic in the reviewed sources establishes a universal total-cost or matched-system power winner.

Choose YouTube settings before estimating bandwidth

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not over four seconds. Test representative audio and motion and monitor stream health rather than treating a recommended setting as proof the connection will be stable (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions).

For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates include:

Output Recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps
4K30 42 Mbps
4K60 50 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your connection or prices for an internet plan. Use the applicable YouTube row for the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to stream, and verify the sustained upload and stream health on your own connection. For live setup guidance, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. One uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast exceeds that stated window, so do not assume the entire continuous stream will be automatically archived. If retaining recordings matters, plan how the stream will be divided into sessions and how each segment will be managed. The chosen session workflow may affect both operator effort and recovery planning.
