If your encoder is sending an outdated YouTube stream key, replace it with the current key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the key saved in your encoder. Check the stream URL and protocol separately, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed in its preview and reports healthy stream status. A stale key is one possible cause of a disconnect—not proof that every mid-stream interruption has the same cause.
What a stale stream key can—and cannot—explain
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes it as working like a stream’s password and address: it helps direct the feed and lets YouTube accept it. The key in the encoder must match the key for the stream configuration in Live Control Room.
YouTube recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder to address certain third-party encoder errors, including startup errors. That does not establish that every disconnect during a running stream is caused by a stale key. A wrong server URL, protocol mismatch, encoder problem, or connection fault can also prevent a feed from reaching YouTube. Use the error and stream-health information in Live Control Room to guide the next check rather than repeatedly resetting keys without evidence.
Check the current key and update the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Go to Create > Go Live, then select the Stream tab. Confirm which stream configuration and key your encoder is meant to use.
- Decide whether to reuse or reset the key. If you believe the existing key is still current, compare it with the key saved in the encoder. If a mismatch or compromise is suspected, a channel owner or manager can select Reset beside the key. Editors and viewers cannot reset it.
- Copy the current key securely. Treat it as a credential: do not post it in chat, screenshots, public support threads, or other public places.
- Replace the key in the encoder. Open its stream settings and paste the current key into the Stream Key field. Returning creators should not assume the encoder refreshed automatically: previous stream settings may load, but a changed key or different stream configuration can leave the encoder using an old value.
- Verify the server URL and protocol separately. If you are configuring RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. Confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s response. Look at the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status. If the same error persists, use YouTube’s displayed error information to decide whether to investigate the key, endpoint, protocol, encoder support, or connection.
Choosing whether to reset the key
| Situation | What to do | Who can do it |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder may still have a valid key, and there is no reason to suspect it was changed or exposed. | Check the stream configuration in Live Control Room and compare it with the key saved in the encoder. Replace the encoder’s value if it does not match. | The person with access to the encoder can update its saved key; a reset is not necessarily required. |
| You suspect the key is outdated, mismatched, or compromised. | Reset the key in Live Control Room, copy the replacement, and update the encoder before sending the feed. | A channel owner or manager must perform the reset; editors and viewers do not have reset permission. |
Resetting changes the credential the encoder must use. If you manage a continuous broadcast, make sure the person responsible for the encoder receives the replacement securely and updates it; otherwise, the encoder may keep trying the old key.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check RTMP versus RTMPS and the stream endpoint
A correct key cannot compensate for sending the feed to the wrong server address or using a protocol the encoder does not support. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted streaming and provides the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. Verify both the URL and the encoder’s protocol setting rather than changing only the key.
- If you see a connection timeout, check the URL and protocol against the values shown in Live Control Room.
- If you see an SSL error, confirm RTMPS support in the encoder and check the connection settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also discusses port 443.
- If the encoder reports that it is sending but YouTube shows no incoming preview, use Live Control Room’s error and stream-health information to continue diagnosis.
Verify the repair and plan for a 24/7 operation
After updating the key or endpoint, test the encoder and confirm that the feed appears in the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; its stream-health view provides status and error messages that can help distinguish a credential issue from a transport or encoder problem.

For a 24/7 schedule, keep a runbook with the stream configuration, the person authorized to reset the key, the secure process for sharing a replacement, and the checks to perform after an update. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee that a single stream event can run indefinitely or that a particular setup will remain uninterrupted.
Common failures and the next check
| Symptom | Likely next check |
|---|---|
| The encoder rejects the stream after a key reset. | Confirm that the replacement key was copied correctly and saved in the encoder’s Stream Key field. |
| The key appears correct, but YouTube does not receive a feed. | Check that the encoder is using the intended stream configuration and the matching server URL. |
| The encoder reports a timeout or SSL error. | Verify the RTMP or RTMPS URL, confirm protocol support, and follow YouTube’s connection troubleshooting, including its guidance on port 443 for SSL issues. |
| A reset did not resolve the disconnect. | Do not assume the key was the cause. Read the Live Control Room error and stream-health status, then investigate the endpoint, protocol, encoder, or connection indicated by the error. |
