The formula is (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × dollars per kWh. Use your own bill or tariff for the rate; there is no reliable universal wattage or cost for a streaming PC.
Calculate energy use and cost
Watts measure power at a moment; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that one kilowatt is 1,000 watts and a kilowatt-hour is one kilowatt used for one hour. See EIA’s explanation of measuring electricity.
- Measure average power in watts. Measure the equipment while it is doing the work you want to estimate, ideally over a representative period.
- Convert watts and time to energy: kWh = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours.
- Apply your electricity rate: energy charge = kWh × dollars per kWh.
For uninterrupted operation, 30 days is 720 hours and 365 days is 8,760 hours. These are arithmetic conversions of 24 hours per day; a calendar month may have a different number of hours.
Measure the equipment you are actually counting
A PC’s power-supply rating is its capacity, not the computer’s actual operating draw. The stream workload, components, and attached equipment affect consumption, so avoid treating any single “streaming PC watts” figure as universal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Measurement options
- Plug-in electricity usage monitor: For compatible plug-connected equipment, use a monitor that reports watts and, ideally, accumulated kWh. Check that it measures the device or group of devices you intend to include.
- Utility meter or portal: Use interval data if your utility provides it at a useful time resolution. EIA notes that some advanced smart meters can track individual-device use, but capabilities vary.
- Telemetry or an assumption: Manufacturer telemetry may help when direct measurement is unavailable. Label an assumed wattage clearly and replace it with a measurement when possible.
Do not include a monitor’s reading for only the PC and then describe it as the whole setup. Decide whether to count the encoder PC, capture or audio equipment, router/modem, and other continuously powered gear. For an incremental estimate, exclude equipment that would stay on whether or not you streamed; for a whole-setup estimate, include it and say so.
Use the right electricity rate
For a personal estimate, use the applicable per-kWh rate on your current bill or utility tariff. If your plan has time-of-use rates, use a weighted rate that reflects when the equipment operates. Decide whether to include variable per-kWh delivery, adjustment, or similar charges in the estimate. Keep fixed monthly customer charges separate: they generally do not change when you add one device.

EIA’s Electric Power Monthly publishes state and end-use-sector average prices in Table 5.6.A. The page listed July 2026 data, released September 24, 2026. Those averages are comparison benchmarks, not your personal tariff: EIA describes average retail prices as weighted averages of revenues and sales. Its Electric Power Annual with final 2024 data, published in October 2025, explains that operating revenue can include energy, demand, customer-service, environmental, fuel-adjustment, miscellaneous, and tax components. A published average and the marginal per-kWh amount on your bill can therefore differ.
Worked example: a clearly labeled estimate
Suppose the setup averages an assumed 100 W and the applicable rate is an assumed $0.20 per kWh. These inputs are examples, not typical-PC measurements or a current U.S. average rate.

| Period | Energy calculation | Energy use | Energy-charge calculation | Estimated charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days (720 hours) | 0.1 kW × 720 hours | 72 kWh | 72 kWh × $0.20 | $14.40 |
| 365 days (8,760 hours) | 0.1 kW × 8,760 hours | 876 kWh | 876 kWh × $0.20 | $175.20 |
Replace both assumptions with your measured average draw and bill rate. The estimate scales linearly: doubling the watts, hours, or rate doubles the calculated energy charge.
Keep the estimate’s boundary clear
This calculation is for electricity used at your premises by the equipment you choose to include. It does not add power used by viewers’ phones, televisions, or computers, or YouTube’s remote infrastructure. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers encoder settings and recommends a speed test and pre-stream test; it also says YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for different devices and networks. That workflow does not specify the power draw of your local PC or quantify remote infrastructure, so neither should be inferred from it.

Common estimation mistakes
- Using the power-supply label as the PC’s draw: Measure the operating system instead; capacity is not consumption.
- Using an average U.S. price as your personal rate: Use the current bill or tariff for the actual account and rate schedule.
- Mixing whole-setup and incremental costs: State which devices are included and whether they would otherwise be on.
- Multiplying by the wrong period: Use actual hours for the date range and state it explicitly.
- Calling an energy-charge estimate the full bill impact: Keep fixed charges separate and state which variable bill components you included.
