What members-only chat changes
In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, open Live chat, select Enable members-only chat, and save. This restricts who can post; it does not make the public broadcast members-only. A members-only stream is a different offer: viewers who are not members cannot watch that stream segment and are prompted to join. Decide whether the benefit you want to offer is participation in chat or access to video before changing the setting.
Does gating chat lead to more signups?
The available YouTube guidance does not establish that members-only chat increases membership signups, and it gives no conversion estimate for 24/7 streams. YouTube recommends considering why viewers might join, choosing perks they value, weighing the effort to provide them, and explaining the offer through announcements, intro videos, and public uploads. YouTube says 20% of new members joined after seeing a members-only content promotion on YouTube Home, Watch Next, Search, or a channel page. The Help page does not state the figure’s year. It concerns promotion of members-only content generally—not members-only chat, livestreams, or 24/7 programming—so it is not a chat-conversion rate. YouTube also advises that a public preview and invitation to join can encourage signups when moving from a public stream to a members-only stream. How to test members-only chat on a continuous stream
- Choose the outcome and test window first. Track new paid signups, and track cancellations as well so a temporary increase is not mistaken for durable growth.
- Record what else changes. Note the dates chat is open or restricted, along with programming changes, major events, promotion changes, and outages. This makes it easier to spot other plausible reasons for a change.
- Compare similar periods. Compare windows with open chat against windows with members-only chat, or rotate the setting on a planned schedule. Where possible, match time windows and days; audience mix and activity can vary across a 24/7 stream.
- Interpret signups in context. Consider signups alongside audience size and chat activity, using a consistent audience measure. YouTube does not specify a standard denominator for this kind of test.
- Explain the offer before restricting chat. State what membership includes, how viewers can find the membership offer, and that the public stream remains watchable. YouTube recommends explaining membership value and promoting memberships in public uploads. YouTube Help: Channel memberships tips.
- Watch for community effects. Restricting participation could make the chat feel less welcoming to non-members. Treat that as something to monitor in your own channel, not an established result.
Review the relevant YouTube Studio analytics
YouTube’s membership analytics include signups and cancellations in the billing period, and charts of members gained and lost over time. Review these for each test window and note the dates of setting changes. If you test a public-to-members-only stream transition instead, YouTube represents the public and members-only portions as separate videos in Analytics.
