24/7 streaming

Can a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet Handle 24/7 YouTube Streaming?

A DigitalOcean Basic Droplet may work for a tested relay of pre-encoded video, but it does not guarantee 24/7 streaming. Encoding load, shared CPU, and outbound transfer determine whether it is a sensible fit.

Yes, sometimes—but a Basic Droplet is not a guaranteed 24/7 streaming host. It may be suitable for relaying an already-encoded video feed if the chosen Droplet has enough memory and outbound transfer, and a representative test shows stable performance. Basic uses shared CPU, so performance can vary. If the Droplet must encode video in real time, or variable CPU access is unacceptable, consider a dedicated-CPU Droplet instead.

What decides whether a Basic Droplet is enough?

The crucial distinction is whether the server relays a stream that is already encoded or encodes video in real time. Relaying generally places a different load on the Droplet than software encoding; neither workload can be judged from the plan name alone. DigitalOcean describes Basic Droplets as shared-CPU instances for low-to-medium-load applications with occasional bursts. Shared CPU access is not reserved, and the available capacity can depend on neighboring Droplets. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance lists the Basic family range as 1–8 vCPUs and 1–32 GB of memory (verified September 3, 2026); that range does not mean every size can encode a particular stream.

  • A plausible Basic use: relaying pre-encoded video, with adequate memory and transfer allowance, after testing the intended stream under representative conditions.
  • Consider dedicated CPU: the Droplet encodes in real time, CPU stays heavily loaded, stream-health problems persist, or the workload cannot tolerate variable CPU access. DigitalOcean lists live streaming and video encoding among uses for its CPU-Optimized Droplets, which provide dedicated CPU. This is a reason to consider that class—not evidence that every relay needs it.

DigitalOcean does not publish a certification that a particular Basic configuration can stream continuously, nor a benchmark comparing a specified Basic size with a specified CPU-Optimized size for a particular YouTube stream. Treat the choice as a workload test, not an uptime guarantee.

Estimate YouTube bandwidth and monthly transfer

YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not promises that a Droplet can sustain the workload. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Check the current settings in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before configuring a stream, since platform guidance can change.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

At a constant 5 Mbps, the arithmetic estimate is about 54 GB sent in 24 hours before protocol overhead. Actual transfer depends on stream behavior and overhead. The estimate is useful for translating a bitrate into a daily data budget; it is not a DigitalOcean plan allowance.

DigitalOcean documents a maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets. That is a ceiling, not an application-level throughput guarantee and not the included monthly outbound transfer. Transfer allowances vary by instance type and size, so check the current configuration and pricing for the specific Droplet before committing to an always-on stream. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits and its plan guidance.

Allow headroom, especially if using a backup stream

If you send both primary and backup streams, add their bitrates together when estimating required bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate; see YouTube’s streaming tips. Headroom reduces the chance that a connection operating close to its limit will cause stream-health trouble, but it does not ensure uptime.

Set up and test the stream before relying on it

  1. Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and the channel’s current status.
  2. Choose the feed type and bitrate. Decide whether the Droplet will relay pre-encoded video or perform real-time encoding. For H.264, use YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate guidance as the starting point; for example, its recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60.
  3. Configure the streaming endpoint and key securely. Use the YouTube Live Control Room’s current server and stream-key details, and prefer RTMPS as YouTube recommends. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a command, log, screenshot, or public repository. If exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls.
  4. Budget outbound transfer and network headroom. Estimate daily use from the bitrate, account for a backup feed if present, and verify the Droplet’s included monthly transfer and overage terms for its exact size and region. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrate.
  5. Run a representative long test. Test the same resolution, frame rate, encoder or relay software, and network route you intend to use. YouTube advises testing, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality; start with its encoder settings and streaming tips.
  6. Watch both the Droplet and YouTube. Observe CPU, memory, outbound traffic, and YouTube’s stream health throughout the test. Plan how you will detect and restart a stopped encoder or a lost connection; a successful preview is not proof of continuous availability.

Basic versus dedicated CPU

Decision factor Basic Droplet Dedicated CPU option
CPU access Shared; available CPU capacity is not guaranteed and can vary with neighboring Droplets. Dedicated CPU provides more predictable CPU access.
Workload fit Potential fit for a modest relay of pre-encoded video, subject to a test of the actual workload. DigitalOcean identifies CPU-Optimized Droplets for CPU-intensive uses including live streaming and video encoding.
Performance evidence for this stream No specific 24/7 certification or benchmark for a particular size and YouTube workload is established. No directly comparable benchmark for a specified Droplet and stream is established.
What to verify Observed CPU and memory, YouTube stream health, outbound transfer allowance, and stability in a representative test. That the selected size fits the encoding workload and transfer budget; dedicated CPU alone does not establish end-to-end stream uptime.

DigitalOcean’s plan guidance explains the CPU classes. Compare actual needs and current plan costs rather than assuming that a larger or dedicated-CPU instance guarantees a continuous YouTube broadcast.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health degrades when encoding: check CPU load and encoder settings against the intended resolution and frame rate. If CPU remains high or frames are dropped, reduce encoding demands or test a dedicated-CPU option.
  • The stream stops after running for a while: inspect the encoder or relay process, connection logs, and YouTube stream status. Set up a way to detect a stopped process or disconnected feed and restart it; DigitalOcean’s shared-CPU description is not a promise that the service will automatically recover an application.
  • Outbound transfer is higher than expected: recalculate from the sustained bitrate and hours streamed, include backup-stream traffic and overhead, then compare with the exact Droplet’s included transfer. Do not mistake the documented 2 Gbps network ceiling for a transfer allowance.
  • YouTube will not accept the broadcast: check channel verification, any live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, the current server address and stream key, and whether the chosen protocol and encoder settings match YouTube’s guidance.
  • Preview or audio/video quality is poor: use YouTube’s preview and stream-health information, test the full encoding and network path, and check bitrate and bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; these steps help diagnose issues but do not guarantee continuous availability.
