Start by identifying whether MediaLive cannot connect to YouTube’s ingest endpoint or whether YouTube is receiving the stream and rejecting its settings. MediaLive alert 6018 indicates a connection failure; YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages point to problems such as codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframes after ingest. Work through the connection checks first, then adjust encoding only if YouTube reports an ingest issue.
1. Identify which layer is failing
MediaLive alert 6018 means the channel is configured to send RTMP output but could not connect to its endpoint. That is a destination or connection problem; the alert alone does not show that YouTube rejected the video or audio encoding. See the AWS MediaLive alert list.
If MediaLive connects but YouTube reports stream-health errors, treat those as a separate ingest-compatibility issue. YouTube checks such things as codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video layout. Read the specific error before changing encoder settings.
2. Troubleshoot a connection failure
-
Read the exact MediaLive alert and output group
Confirm the alert number and the affected output. Alert 6018 specifically describes failure to connect to the RTMP endpoint. AWS documents other output alerts, including failed writes, so do not assume that every output symptom has the same cause.

-
Compare MediaLive’s destination with YouTube Live Control Room
Check the protocol (RTMP or RTMPS), server address, port, application name, stream name or key, and any username or password required by the destination. AWS says the sender and downstream operator must agree on the destination details for each output. A standard MediaLive channel requires two destinations; a single-pipeline channel requires one. See AWS RTMP output destinations.
-
Confirm the current YouTube stream URL and key
Get the current ingest details in YouTube Live Control Room and make sure they are the ones configured in MediaLive. If a key was changed, reset, or replaced, update the MediaLive destination accordingly. YouTube explains how to troubleshoot encoder connection errors and how to reset a stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in logs, screenshots, or public examples.

-
Check RTMPS details for SSL errors or timeouts
YouTube recommends RTMPS. For an SSL certificate error, verify that the protocol and server are set to RTMPS; YouTube says to try port 443 if needed. For a connection timeout, verify the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
-
Check network reachability if the configuration looks right
If the destination fields and MediaLive output configuration match YouTube but the connection still fails, investigate outbound reachability and whether the destination is available. Use the alert and operational metrics available for your MediaLive channel to narrow where delivery stops. Network paths and account configurations differ, so there is no single firewall rule that applies to every deployment.

3. Troubleshoot YouTube ingest or stream-health errors
When YouTube receives the stream, open Live Control Room and read its stream-health messages before changing the MediaLive encode. The error list identifies issues including unsupported video or audio formats, bitrate, sample rate, number of streams, channel count, progressive versus interlaced video, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and mismatched primary and backup feeds. See YouTube’s live-streaming error messages.
Verify the settings that affect compatibility
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs for these protocols; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), square pixels, progressive scan, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate tables for the selected codec and resolution.

| H.264 stream format | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the listed resolutions and frame rates. They are guidance for stream compatibility, not evidence that a bitrate mismatch caused a MediaLive endpoint connection failure.
Check primary and backup streams together
If you use primary and backup streams, YouTube requires their settings to match for failover. Compare resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, channel count, and audio codec. A mismatch can produce an ingest or failover problem even when a connection is established.

4. Test and monitor the stream
-
Run a pre-event test
Send a test stream with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check both the MediaLive alert state and YouTube’s stream health so you can distinguish a connection fault from an ingest warning before the event. YouTube recommends testing before going live; see its live streaming settings guidance.
-
Monitor during the event
Keep Live Control Room stream-health messages in view and note their severity and timing. If a new alert appears, compare it with the MediaLive output alert and the settings or destination change immediately preceding it. This helps avoid changing codec or bitrate in response to a connection-only fault.
5. Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | What it points to | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive alert 6018 | MediaLive cannot connect to the configured RTMP endpoint. | Verify endpoint address, protocol, port, application and stream name/key, and any required authentication. |
| “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out” | Connection setup, endpoint availability, or outbound reachability. | Verify the URL, RTMPS support, and network path. |
| “The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate” | Potential protocol or secure-ingest configuration mismatch. | Verify RTMPS server and protocol settings; try port 443 if needed. |
| YouTube reports codec, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, keyframe, or audio errors | YouTube is checking stream compatibility after receiving the stream. | Use the specific Live Control Room message and YouTube’s settings for the chosen format. |
| Primary/backup mismatch | Failover feeds do not have matching settings. | Compare all required video and audio parameters across both feeds. |
6. Keep a YouTube stream running without operating MediaLive
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or game feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, not a fix for a MediaLive endpoint error or a camera-based live production. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
