If you already own a NAS, its incremental electricity use may be inexpensive; a cloud VM adds recurring compute, storage and potentially network charges. Compare the same 24/7 workload using measured NAS power and your electricity tariff, then price the exact cloud region and configuration. For a reference point, a Google Cloud c4-standard-2 example works out to about $70.71 in compute for an average 730-hour month, before disks and networking.
Compare the same workload, not just the headline prices
For a fair monthly comparison, specify the stream resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, software or managed encoding, storage needs and runtime. This article uses 730 hours as a convenient average month for continuous operation; actual calendar months differ.
- Home NAS: count electricity that the streaming project adds. If you would run the NAS anyway, its entire power draw is not necessarily an incremental streaming cost.
- Cloud VM: count compute for the full runtime, plus disk, networking and any other services in the design.
- Either option: account separately for hardware purchases, maintenance, backup, outage tolerance and setup effort. The examples below do not price these factors.
Calculate the NAS electricity cost
Use this formula, measuring the equipment under the intended streaming workload if possible:
Monthly electricity cost = incremental average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Include the NAS and encoder’s incremental draw. Add disks that would not otherwise be powered, cooling or extra networking only if they are additional to the streaming project. Idle power or a device’s published model specification may not represent a system encoding continuously.
Illustration using a stated assumption
At an assumed 30 W of incremental draw and $0.173/kWh, a 730-hour month uses 0.030 kW × 730 h = 21.9 kWh, costing about $3.79. The 30 W is an illustrative assumption, not a measured or representative NAS figure.

Use your local tariff
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30¢/kWh in 2026. Its 2025 state figures ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. These are U.S. benchmarks, not a substitute for your own bill; rates vary by location and tariff. See the EIA electricity data.
Estimate the cloud VM bill
Choose the provider, region, machine type, operating system and runtime, then price the complete configuration. A VM left running around the clock uses roughly 730 compute hours in this monthly comparison.

Google Cloud’s pricing page displayed c4-standard-2 at $0.096866 per hour for its default on-demand example. Multiplying by 730 hours gives approximately $70.71 for compute alone. The displayed VM price excludes disks and networking; region and discounts can change the rate. Treat this as a dated example, not a universal cloud VM price. Check Google Cloud Compute pricing.
Keep managed encoding separate
A VM running encoder software is not the same setup as a managed live-encoding service. Google says its Live Stream API is billed by active channel time and input/output resolution, with a ten-minute minimum and durations rounded up to the nearest minute. Price the chosen service and configuration directly; do not add it automatically to a VM-only estimate. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

Do not assume the VM pays to deliver every viewer’s playback
With YouTube ingest, your system sends an encoded contribution stream to YouTube; viewer playback delivery is handled by YouTube. Confirm the cloud provider’s ingress, egress and network terms for your particular design before estimating the bill. No single network charge can be established without a provider, region and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make sure both setups can handle the stream
The encoding settings affect upload capacity and may also affect CPU load, hardware acceleration needs or managed-encoding fees. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a quality your connection can sustain and test with the expected audio and motion. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Example H.264 input bitrates
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are encoder input rates, not estimates of bandwidth needed to deliver video to viewers. Make sure the home connection or cloud configuration can sustain the outgoing contribution stream.
Encoder and stream-key workflow
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. The encoder can be software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder; dedicated hardware is optional when a software setup meets the workload. Include a hardware purchase in the comparison only if you actually need one. Read YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Build a decision from your own inputs
- Record the workload: note resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format and whether encoding is software-based or managed.
- Measure the home option: estimate incremental NAS-and-encoder watts while running that workload; use the electricity price on your bill.
- Price the cloud option: select a region and VM that can encode the stream, multiply its hourly compute rate by the intended runtime, then add storage and applicable network and service charges.
- Compare total ownership: if buying or upgrading hardware, include that cost over the period you expect to use it. Consider power and internet outages, maintenance and backup needs separately from the monthly operating total.
- Recheck assumptions: cloud prices and local electricity tariffs can change. Confirm current prices for the exact region and plan before committing.
The numerical examples are not a like-for-like bill: the NAS example covers assumed incremental electricity only, while the cloud example covers compute only. They cannot establish a general winner. An existing low-power NAS may have a small incremental power bill, while a newly purchased or higher-power system has additional costs; a cloud VM avoids running the encoder at home but requires a complete cloud cost estimate.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. It is a separate cloud-service option, not a NAS or general-purpose VM cost estimate.
