Sometimes—but not automatically. A used office desktop can cost less if you already own it or buy it cheaply, its measured power draw and home internet costs are low, and you can maintain it. A VPS can be cheaper when its monthly fee and included outbound transfer cover your video traffic without substantial local power, hardware or connectivity costs. Compare the full monthly cost for your workload rather than the desktop’s purchase price with a VPS’s advertised starting price.
What determines which option costs less?
The desktop-versus-VPS answer depends on the workload and the costs specific to your location and plan. A single 24/7 stream sent to a platform has a different traffic profile from a server delivering video on demand to many viewers. Before comparing options, define how much video you will send, where it will be served, and what level of interruption you can tolerate.
- Desktop: purchase price spread over its remaining useful life, measured electricity use, any additional ISP or data charges, storage and backups, repairs, optional UPS, and your setup and maintenance time.
- VPS: compute, disk, backups, networking, and outbound traffic above the plan’s included allowance.
For either option, state the monthly operating hours, stream bitrate, expected viewers or concurrency, storage period, local electricity tariff, and—if using a VPS—the provider, plan and region. Without those inputs, a single monthly total is not a reliable comparison.
Build a break-even estimate for a home desktop
Measure power instead of assuming a typical wattage
Use a plug-in power meter to measure the desktop at the wall while it performs the intended task. Include any equipment that must stay on for the stream, such as a router, if its power draw is incremental to this use. Multiply the measured kilowatt-hours by your marginal electricity rate. A continuous 24/7 workload runs about 720 hours in a 30-day month, but actual billing periods vary.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
StreamNeo’s 2026 comparison uses 120 W and 720 operating hours per month as an illustrative vendor scenario, not an independent measurement or a representative figure for used office desktops. Treat it as an example assumption only, not a substitute for measuring your machine: StreamNeo’s cost comparison.
Account for the machine and the connection
Divide the desktop’s purchase cost by the realistic number of months you expect it to remain useful for this job. Add expected storage, backup, repair and any UPS costs. Check your ISP’s upload capacity, data limits, extra fees and rules for hosting or continuous traffic; these vary by provider and plan. Home power and internet outages, hardware failures, public reachability, and the time needed to diagnose and recover from problems also affect whether the apparent cash saving is worthwhile.

Calculate VPS cost using traffic, not just the sticker price
A VPS’s monthly compute price is only part of the bill. Check what outbound transfer is included, whether the quota is pooled or resets, and the provider’s overage rate. Estimate the video’s outbound data from bitrate and hours, then include the number of simultaneous recipients: serving the same bitrate to more viewers generally multiplies outbound traffic.
DigitalOcean’s public Droplet pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists plans starting at $4 per month; its displayed 512 MiB plan includes 500 GiB of outbound transfer. That allowance is specific to the displayed plan and does not establish that it can serve every video workload. DigitalOcean documents additional outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB, free inbound transfer, and pooled allowances across a team’s Droplets without monthly rollover. These rates are provider-specific examples, not a comparison of all VPS providers or a claim that the entry plan is suitable for a particular stream. Other cloud costs can also extend beyond compute: Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop guidance identifies virtual-machine compute, managed-disk storage and network bandwidth as resource charges, with related identity, licensing and optional services potentially adding cost. It is a cloud-desktop cost guide, not a quote for a Linux video-serving VPS: Microsoft Learn’s cost guidance.
Compare the options on the same workload
| Cost or operational factor | Used office desktop at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Purchase price, if you do not already own a suitable machine | Usually a recurring plan charge; confirm any setup or disk costs with the provider |
| Power | Use measured wall power and your local marginal electricity price | Included in the provider’s plan price or billing model; check the selected service’s terms |
| Outbound traffic | Subject to home ISP upload capacity, data policy and potential extra charges | Check included transfer and overage against bitrate, operating hours and viewers |
| Maintenance | You manage the computer, storage, updates, recovery and local connectivity | You manage the server unless the service includes relevant administration |
| Reliability and recovery | Depends on your hardware, power, connection and recovery arrangements | Depends on provider, plan, region and your configuration; verify the service’s terms |
| Scaling and geography | Constrained by home upload and hardware; viewers’ experience can vary by location | Depends on available plan sizes, regions, network and delivery architecture |
For one continuous stream, a desktop may win if its acquisition and operating costs are low and the connection is suitable. A VPS may win if the included transfer is enough and its fixed price avoids meaningful extra home costs. For multiple viewers, calculate each option’s actual delivery path and traffic; do not assume that a basic VPS is automatically a cost-effective video-on-demand server.

When a managed video service is a different option
A managed video-delivery product should not be treated as interchangeable with a general-purpose VPS: its upload, playback and platform features must fit the job. Cloudflare Stream, for example, says it charges for stored and delivered video minutes: storage is sold in increments of $5 per month per 1,000 stored minutes, and delivery costs $1 per 1,000 delivered minutes, with bandwidth included in delivery pricing. Its pricing page was updated September 8, 2026. Compare that usage-based model only if its product capabilities meet your requirements: Cloudflare Stream pricing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is another option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera streaming.
