Verdict: AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a standalone way to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock. It packages and originates video supplied by an upstream encoder, while YouTube’s documented workflow requires an encoder to send video to YouTube using its stream URL and key. MediaPackage can make sense when you also need packaging for other playback destinations; for a YouTube-only prerecorded loop, it may add components and cost without solving the central publishing job.
What MediaPackage does—and what it does not
AWS describes Elemental MediaPackage as a just-in-time video packaging and origination service. In AWS’s live workflow, an encoder such as MediaLive sends HLS content to a MediaPackage channel; MediaPackage packages that feed and makes it available through endpoints to downstream devices or CDNs. It is a part of a video-delivery pipeline, not the encoder that creates a live feed from uploaded files.
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is separate: configure an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, then send the video feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The AWS and YouTube workflows cited here do not establish MediaPackage itself as a direct RTMP(S) publishing destination for YouTube. A MediaPackage endpoint should not be treated as interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest URL.
How the YouTube handoff affects the architecture
For a channel that only needs a continuous YouTube feed, start with the component that can encode or play the video and publish to YouTube. Add MediaPackage only if its packaging and origination role serves another real requirement, such as making streams available to a site or app, delivering through a CDN, supporting additional playback formats, or enabling time-shifted or live-to-VOD workflows. Those functions require an appropriate design; they do not appear automatically just because a MediaPackage channel exists.

A complete AWS design would need to account for the upstream encoder, the YouTube output path, and any packaging, delivery, monitoring, or redundancy components it actually uses. The documented AWS live flow sends HLS into MediaPackage, while YouTube’s encoder guidance uses its own stream URL and key. The sources do not establish an exact 24/7 bridge from MediaPackage output to YouTube. Before deploying, verify the selected services’ current output capabilities and the precise handoff for your service versions and region rather than assuming MediaPackage can publish directly to YouTube.
Costs: estimate the whole pipeline, not one service
AWS bases MediaPackage live charges on the volume of video ingested into a channel and the volume of content originated and packaged. A 24/7 estimate must also account for the encoder and its output profile, aggregate bitrate, any configured ingest redundancy, packaging and origination, viewer delivery, and other services in the architecture. AWS recommends a CDN such as CloudFront for more efficient viewer delivery through caching, but the cost depends on the actual delivery pattern and cache behavior.

There is no defensible universal monthly total for an always-on YouTube channel from the information established here. A useful estimate needs a region, bitrate or output ladder, operating hours, redundancy choices, expected viewer distribution, CDN assumptions, and applicable current rates. AWS reference-solution figures apply to their stated sample configuration, not automatically to a continuous YouTube channel. Use current AWS service pricing and calculators with your own assumptions before committing.
MediaPackage limits that matter for live and time-shifted workflows
AWS publishes separate MediaPackage live and time-shifted quotas. The live manifest limit is not a limit on how long a YouTube broadcast can run.

These are AWS-published quotas; verify the current limits for the MediaPackage version and region you plan to deploy.
Configure and operate the YouTube side
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the encoder that actually publishes the feed. YouTube recommends RTMPS and provides encoder guidance for protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate. Select settings appropriate to the content and available upload capacity; the correct bitrate is not a single number for every resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test the feed and monitor stream health before relying on it continuously.

For archive expectations, YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. Do not assume that guidance guarantees a complete archive for a session that runs longer than 12 hours. Decide how you will manage session length and preserve programming if complete archives are important; the cited guidance does not prescribe a specific method for a continuous channel.

- Consider it when packaging and origination are needed as part of a broader live, VOD, catch-up, time-shifted, or multi-destination video workflow.
- Question the extra layer when the sole goal is looping prerecorded video on YouTube. Compare the value of MediaPackage’s packaging role with the added encoder, handoff, configuration, and service costs.
- Validate the complete design when uninterrupted operation is essential. Testing, monitoring, restart behavior, and failover depend on the chosen architecture; the published sources do not validate a particular AWS failover setup.
