Which DigitalOcean alternative fits your stream?
First decide whether you want to manage a server or have a service run the continuous stream workflow. With a virtual server, you choose and maintain the operating system, encoder, restart behavior and monitoring. A managed service shifts more of that work to the provider. A prerecorded loop, a live camera feed and a computer-generated scene can also need different encoding resources.

Estimate bandwidth before choosing a server
Transfer allowance can be a deciding cost even though the server sends only one encoder feed to YouTube. It does not send a separate copy to each viewer; YouTube handles audience delivery.

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its listed minimums are 5 and 6 Mbps respectively. At 14 Mbps, a continuous feed uses about 4.54 decimal TB over 30 days, before audio and protocol overhead. That is a calculation from bitrate and duration, not a provider quote or a published usage statistic. Leave headroom and use actual observed transfer to size a plan. Lower bitrate reduces transfer but also reduces image quality.
Compare provider transfer terms
- DigitalOcean: Its pricing page lists included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB per month, depending on plan, and public-internet egress overage at $0.01/GiB. Check the chosen Droplet’s specific allowance.
- Lightsail: Bundles include transfer allowances. AWS says inbound and outbound usage count toward those allowances, and excess outbound transfer may be billed at a region-dependent rate. For example, the current bundle page lists 5 TB transfer for its $96/month 2-vCPU, 4-GB compute-optimized bundle. Check the current bundle and region terms before purchasing.
- Hetzner: Consult the current cloud pricing and traffic terms for your intended data center; a comparable plan price is not established here.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
A cloud server does not create a YouTube broadcast on its own. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—must send video to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate encoding, with a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key secret: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots or logs.
- In the encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and codec, using YouTube’s published encoder guidance as a starting point.
- Set constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported by your encoder.
- Start the encoder and verify the incoming signal in Live Control Room before setting the broadcast to its intended visibility.
YouTube publishes settings for H.264, H.265 and AV1, but support depends on the encoder you use. Test the actual configuration and upload path rather than assuming every codec option is supported by your software or server.

Keep a self-managed stream running
A VM gives you control but leaves operations in your hands. Plan for process restarts, health monitoring, disk and log growth, software updates, and protection of the YouTube stream key. Check that the chosen instance can sustain the encoder workload—especially if it transcodes or generates a scene rather than merely relaying a prepared feed.
DigitalOcean’s Marketplace listing for SRS describes features including publisher authentication, recording, stream restreaming and FFmpeg transcoding. The catalog page says it was generated on 2024-03-13 and lists component versions, so verify the current image and maintenance state before using those version details for a new deployment.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer continuous broadcast, do not rely on that statement as an archive guarantee; confirm current YouTube behavior and record a separate copy if preserving the full stream matters.

Common issues and practical fixes
- YouTube does not detect the feed: Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the encoder is sending, and inspect Live Control Room for an incoming signal. Keep the key private and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The stream disconnects or fails to recover: On a self-managed host, check encoder process status, network connectivity, logs and restart supervision. A cloud VM does not automatically provide a correctly configured recovery process.
- Transfer use or cost is higher than expected: Recalculate using the actual bitrate and duration, include audio and protocol overhead, and compare against the exact plan’s allowance and regional overage terms.
- The server struggles while encoding: Reduce the workload or choose a server with sufficient CPU capacity. A prerecorded file being relayed differs from a live scene or a transcoding workflow.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive: Streams over 12 hours should not be assumed to receive the automatic archive described by YouTube’s help page. Confirm current behavior and record separately when needed.
