For YouTube Live, send FFmpeg’s encoder output straight to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. If you need AWS packaging between an RTMP source and playback endpoints, use MediaLive as the bridge to MediaPackage.
Which route fits your goal?
| Goal | Supported route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send FFmpeg to YouTube Live | FFmpeg encoder → YouTube Live server URL and stream key, using RTMP or preferably RTMPS | YouTube’s encoder setup sends the encoder feed to YouTube; MediaPackage is not required. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the destination setup. |
| Bring an RTMP source into AWS for packaging and playback delivery | FFmpeg/RTMP → MediaLive RTMP input → MediaPackage output → MediaPackage origin endpoint and downstream playback delivery | MediaLive accepts RTMP input and supports a MediaPackage output group; MediaPackage packages upstream content for origin delivery. See MediaLive’s input codec table, its supported output destinations, and MediaPackage channel documentation. |
| Build a new MediaPackage v2 workflow | MediaLive → MediaPackage v2 CMAF ingest over HTTPS | AWS recommends the MediaPackage CMAF ingest output group for new v2 workflows. See MediaLive’s MediaPackage delivery guidance. |
| Use MediaPackage v1 | MediaLive → MediaPackage v1 HLS ingest | The v1 live input documentation lists HLS ingest, not RTMP. See MediaPackage v1 supported live inputs. |
Why FFmpeg cannot push RTMP directly to MediaPackage
MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF as live input types pushed over HTTPS. MediaPackage v1 documents HLS ingest over HTTPS/WebDAV. RTMP does not appear in either generation’s supported live-input list. An ingest endpoint being available does not make it an RTMP server: the accepted protocol is determined by the input type configured for the channel. AWS also states that the v2 channel input type cannot be changed after channel creation, so select the intended ingest format when you create it. See MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and v2 channel details.
For MediaPackage v2, treat HLS and CMAF as distinct HTTPS ingest choices; CMAF ingest is not RTMP or ordinary HLS push. For a new MediaLive-to-v2 workflow, AWS recommends its CMAF ingest output group.
Send FFmpeg to YouTube instead
- Get the destination from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Do not substitute a MediaPackage ingest URL or guess either value. Follow YouTube’s create-a-live-stream instructions.
- Configure FFmpeg to publish to that destination. Use the protocol and encoder settings supported by your FFmpeg build and the YouTube endpoint. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Its guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and its encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table.
- Choose settings for your output, not a universal bitrate. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. Consult its current table for the target you intend to send rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Start the FFmpeg stream and verify it in Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and that audio and video behave as expected before relying on the live output.
This is a destination setup, not an FFmpeg command recipe: the exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, codecs, stream URL, and key. YouTube supplies the URL and key in your account; this article does not invent them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When MediaLive belongs in the workflow
If the source must enter AWS as RTMP and then be packaged for playback, configure MediaLive with an RTMP input and a MediaPackage output group. Keep the two sides distinct: MediaLive receives RTMP, while MediaPackage receives its supported HLS or CMAF ingest over HTTPS. MediaPackage then serves packaged content from its origin endpoints; it is not an RTMP relay that forwards a feed to YouTube.
For new MediaPackage v2 workflows, use the CMAF ingest path AWS recommends. For a v1 workflow, use the documented HLS ingest path. See AWS’s MediaLive-to-MediaPackage guidance for the output configuration.

Common mistakes and fixes
- RTMP connection fails against a MediaPackage endpoint: MediaPackage does not list RTMP as a live input. Send RTMP to MediaLive, or publish directly to YouTube if YouTube is the destination.
- A MediaPackage v2 channel exists, but the intended protocol is wrong: v2 supports HLS or CMAF ingest over HTTPS, and the channel input type is immutable after creation. Create a channel with the correct input type rather than trying to point RTMP at its ingest endpoint.
- MediaLive receives RTMP but MediaPackage does not receive the output: Check that MediaLive has a MediaPackage output group and that its chosen output format matches the v1 HLS or v2 CMAF ingest workflow. MediaLive’s RTMP input and MediaPackage output are separate configurations.
- YouTube does not receive the FFmpeg stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room, the selected RTMP/RTMPS destination, and whether your FFmpeg build supports the chosen codecs and settings.
- The stream connects but settings are rejected or unstable: Check the resolution-specific bitrate guidance, CBR mode, supported video/audio codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval in YouTube’s encoder settings documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, rather than a live FFmpeg feed, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not a camera feed or an RTMP bridge to MediaPackage. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.
