The setup removes your home computer and internet connection from the streaming path, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the encoder, instance, network, or YouTube can still disconnect. You need to choose an instance for your actual workload, monitor the stream, and test recovery before relying on it.
Before you launch: check YouTube eligibility and choose the workload
Enable live streaming on the channel
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step before provisioning a server. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Decide what the EC2 instance will do
This procedure assumes a video file or prepared scene is available to the server and that encoder software will send it to YouTube. There are two materially different workloads: relaying an already encoded feed, and encoding or transcoding media on the server. Transcoding requires processing capacity appropriate to the source, output codec, resolution, and frame rate; a relay has different CPU and memory needs. No single EC2 size can be recommended without those details.
If you loop a local file, confirm that you have the rights to stream it and that the encoder can repeat it without an unintended black screen or gap. A continuous process is not itself proof that the content complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content before going live.

Launch an EC2 host in Mumbai
- Select the Mumbai region. In the AWS Console, choose Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region identifier
ap-south-1. AWS lists the EC2 service endpoint for this region at its EC2 endpoints page. - Choose an instance for the measured workload. For transcoding, account for codec, source and output resolution, frame rate, and whether hardware acceleration is needed. For relaying, account for the software’s requirements and network demand. Check the selected type’s memory, CPU or accelerator capability, and network performance rather than assuming a general-purpose instance will be enough.
- Review network capacity and security. EC2 network performance varies by instance type; an “up to” rate is not a promise of that throughput continuously. Compare the type’s stated network characteristics with the stream bitrate and YouTube’s headroom guidance. Keep administrative access restricted to the addresses and users that need it, and do not expose the stream key in a public script, image, or log. See AWS’s instance network bandwidth documentation.
- Install and configure your encoder. Install a server-compatible encoder or relay, then make the media file or feed available to it. Configure a restart policy or supervisor for the encoder process, but test that it actually reconnects and resumes the intended media after a failure.
Do not infer viewer latency or playback quality from the Mumbai location alone. YouTube processes live streams for viewer playback formats, and the viewer experience depends on factors beyond the origin region.
Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings
Get the current stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and retrieve its current server URL and stream key from the stream settings. YouTube documents stream configuration at Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the URL and key in the EC2 encoder. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest. RTMPS protects the transport with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or secret store, limit who can read it, and rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Do not paste it into a public repository or share it in screenshots.
Match output to the source and available capacity
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest using H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps. These are platform-supported formats, not a guarantee that every encoder or EC2 instance can encode them at every resolution. If you are transcoding, test the exact source-to-output conversion on the chosen instance. If you are only relaying an encoded feed, avoid unnecessary re-encoding that could change quality or increase compute demand.

| H.264 output example | YouTube recommended bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
For these settings, use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. The bitrate examples and encoder recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; choose settings that match your source and confirm the encoder can sustain them.
Test the stream and keep it healthy
- Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends bandwidth headroom of 20%. Plan for the stream’s bitrate plus that margin; if operating primary and backup feeds simultaneously, include both in the calculation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before the public broadcast. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream, inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm that video and audio behave as intended. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health; its live-streaming tips also discuss preparation and failover.
- Monitor both sides of the connection. Watch the encoder process and logs, EC2 instance state, network performance, and YouTube stream health. AWS provides CloudWatch and ENA network metrics; which metrics are available depends on the instance and configuration.
- Test recovery deliberately. Verify what happens if the encoder exits, the instance reboots, or the connection to YouTube drops. A process supervisor can restart software, but it cannot by itself fix a failed instance, bad credentials, an unhealthy source, or a YouTube-side issue. Test reconnect behavior and keep a practical way to intervene.
Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives
A server that stays powered on is not the same thing as a broadcast that never disconnects. Encoder crashes, network interruptions, instance events, expired or changed stream settings, and platform-side problems can all break continuity. An automatic restart can reduce manual work, but it does not establish end-to-end uptime; include monitoring and a recovery procedure in the operating plan.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived under the same rule. If an archive matters, check the current behavior in YouTube Studio and plan how you will handle long broadcasts—such as whether to stop and start separate sessions—before scheduling them. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Estimate the EC2 cost before leaving it on
EC2 On-Demand compute is charged while the instance is running, with a 60-second minimum billing period. A 24/7 workload means the instance remains billable while it runs, and the total also depends on the selected instance and any associated resources or data transfer. There is no single reliable Mumbai monthly figure without a specific configuration. Check current ap-south-1 pricing for the instance and related charges before deployment; AWS explains On-Demand billing at Purchasing On-Demand Instances for Amazon EC2.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified, eligible, and has completed first-time activation. If activation is pending, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube reports no incoming video: check that the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key, that it is actually publishing, and that outbound connectivity is available. If the key may have leaked, rotate it and update the encoder configuration.
- The stream drops or reports poor health: compare actual sustained network capacity with the bitrate and 20% headroom requirement; check EC2 network metrics, encoder logs, and YouTube’s stream-health view. An instance’s advertised “up to” network performance should not be treated as guaranteed throughput.
- The encoder falls behind or fails during conversion: determine whether it is transcoding rather than simply relaying. Reduce the output workload or select a more suitable compute configuration only after testing the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- The server restarts but the broadcast does not recover: confirm the encoder is configured to start after reboot, can access the media and protected key, and reconnects successfully. Test the entire recovery sequence rather than assuming a process restart restores the YouTube session.
- You expected a full-day archive: the stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Verify current Studio behavior for your planned duration and archive needs before relying on it.
