There is no universal winner. Hetzner Cloud is a better fit when you value flexible capacity and can manage plan-specific traffic charges; a dedicated root server is worth evaluating when sustained workloads and its published traffic policy suit your stream. If predictable CPU matters but you do not need a whole physical server, Hetzner’s CCX instances are a middle ground. None of these choices guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast: the encoder, network route, source media, YouTube ingest and recovery setup all matter.

Start with the stream, not the server label

For a 24/7 prerecorded-video stream, a server must run the playback and encoder continuously, send the resulting stream to YouTube, and recover if a process or connection fails. Compare five things before choosing: CPU behavior, outbound traffic allowance and overage, location and route to YouTube ingest, current plan or server price, and the way your encoder restarts or fails over.

A server’s port speed and traffic allowance are not the same as the encoder bitrate. The bitrate determines how much data the stream sends over time; the allowance determines how much outbound traffic the hosting plan includes before charges apply. Estimate traffic from the actual bitrate and operating schedule, then check the selected plan’s terms and region.

What each Hetzner option offers

Shared-resource Hetzner Cloud: flexible, with burstable CPU

Hetzner describes CX, CPX and CAX cloud resources as shared across instances. They have baseline CPU performance and can temporarily burst above it. That may be adequate for a workload whose sustained encoder demand fits the baseline, but a burst is not the same as guaranteed, continuous CPU capacity. Check the plan’s current specifications and test with your actual media, codec and encoder. Hetzner Cloud server overview

Traffic allowances depend on plan and region. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB included for EU CX, CPX and CAX instances; US and Singapore allowances vary by plan, as do CCX allowances. Cloud traffic beyond the included amount is billable. Hetzner says excess usage is billed in 100 MB blocks, and notifications at 75% and 100% are alerts, not caps. Confirm the current allowance and billing terms for the exact instance and location before relying on them. Hetzner traffic documentation Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ

CCX: cloud flexibility with dedicated CPU resources

Hetzner says CCX instances provide exclusive CPU resources and continuous, predictable high CPU performance, and recommends them for high production loads and CPU-intensive applications. This can be a sensible option if a shared plan’s baseline is not enough but leasing a physical server would be unnecessary. CCX remains a cloud plan, so its traffic allowance is still plan- and region-specific. Hetzner Cloud server overview Hetzner traffic documentation

Dedicated root server: a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink and published unlimited-traffic policy

Hetzner’s documentation says root servers have a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink by default and unlimited traffic. The exception is a 10 Gbit/s uplink: it includes 20 TB, with overage charged per TB. Verify the specific model and its current location and network terms. A dedicated uplink and traffic policy do not guarantee that YouTube ingest or your whole stream will remain available. Hetzner traffic documentation

For example, Hetzner’s AX42 product page lists a 1 Gbit/s port and minimum network availability of 99.9%. That is a product-page network-availability figure, not a guarantee of 99.9% end-to-end YouTube stream uptime or of uninterrupted encoder operation. Hetzner AX42 product page

Compare the trade-offs

Option CPU behavior Traffic and network information Consider it when
Shared Hetzner Cloud (CX, CPX, CAX) Shared resources, baseline performance and temporary bursts Plan- and region-dependent allowance; cloud overage is billable You value flexible capacity or cloud locations and can verify traffic costs for your selected plan
CCX cloud Exclusive CPU resources; Hetzner describes performance as continuous and predictable Allowance varies by plan and region; cloud overage is billable You want predictable CPU without a whole physical machine
Dedicated root server Physical server dedicated to your use; confirm the model’s specifications for your workload Default dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink and unlimited traffic under Hetzner’s published policy; 10 Gbit/s has a 20 TB allowance and per-TB overage Your sustained workload and outbound volume fit the model and its current terms

The cited policies do not establish a universal current cost comparison or a break-even point. Compare current prices for the precise plan, server model and region you can use, then include estimated overage and any operational costs relevant to your setup.

Size the encoder and bandwidth for the real workload

Estimate outbound traffic from bitrate

Multiply the stream bitrate by its running time to estimate the data sent, then compare that estimate with the hosting plan’s included traffic. For a nonstop stream, even a moderate bitrate accumulates substantial monthly traffic. The estimate should account for audio and video and allow for overhead; treat the encoder’s configured bitrate as an estimate, not a perfect traffic meter. Check whether the selected region and plan include enough traffic and what excess usage costs.

Keep upload bandwidth headroom

YouTube’s networking guidance says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. That margin is about the encoder host’s available outbound capacity, not the plan’s monthly traffic allowance. A high-capacity port does not resolve a traffic overage, and a generous traffic allowance does not ensure a stable route to YouTube. YouTube streaming tips

Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a starting point

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Its H.264 examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are recommendations, not a promise that a particular Hetzner plan can encode those settings; benchmark the actual encoder and content on the chosen hardware. Make a choice with a measured workload

  1. Set the output you actually need. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate based on the video and audience experience you want, using YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point.
  2. Benchmark the encoder. Run the actual playback and encoding workload on a candidate plan or model. Check sustained CPU use, output stability and whether the host leaves enough capacity for playback, monitoring and recovery processes. The available product information does not establish a universal CPU threshold by resolution or codec.
  3. Calculate traffic. Estimate data sent at the target bitrate over your schedule, then compare it with the current included allowance for the exact plan and region. Include billable overage in your cost comparison.
  4. Check the route and region. Compare available locations and test the connection to YouTube’s ingest from the location you intend to use. A published uplink speed alone does not tell you the quality of the route to ingest.
  5. Price the specific configuration. Compare the current cloud plan or dedicated model, not broad categories. Include the traffic policy and any required backup or monitoring arrangements; a universal break-even price is not established by the published figures here.
  6. Test recovery before relying on it. Simulate an encoder or connectivity interruption and verify that your process restarts or your backup encoder takes over as expected.

Configure, test and monitor the live stream

Choosing a host is only one part of operating a nonstop stream. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover. During operation, watch audio and video as well as the platform’s stream-health indicators. Stop the encoder when the event ends if the stream is not intended to continue. YouTube encoder settings YouTube live-stream tips

Before running a 24/7 channel, confirm that you have the rights to the video and audio you stream and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies. Using prerecorded material does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights or that the channel meets platform policy requirements. YouTube live-stream tips

Common problems and what to check

  • Encoding becomes unstable under sustained load: check whether a shared instance is operating beyond its baseline rather than relying on temporary bursts. Test a CCX instance with dedicated CPU resources or a suitable dedicated model against the real workload.
  • Traffic charges rise unexpectedly: compare measured outbound usage with the plan’s allowance for that region. Cloud usage notices do not stop billing; review the current overage terms and traffic usage.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: check available outbound bandwidth, leave the recommended headroom, inspect the route and monitor the encoder connection. Rehearse a restart or backup-encoder failover instead of assuming the host will restore the broadcast by itself.
  • A published availability figure looks like an uptime promise: distinguish network availability for a product from end-to-end stream continuity. Encoder, source media, software supervision, routing and YouTube ingest remain separate dependencies.
  • The stream runs at a new resolution or codec but fails: re-benchmark CPU use and verify bitrate, CBR and keyframe settings against YouTube’s current guidance; performance at one setting does not prove capacity at another.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded video without maintaining a server and encoder yourself, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to evaluate first: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera broadcast. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
