There is no universally best Linode region for a 24/7 YouTube livestream. Start with an eligible core region close to the largest share of your viewers—or to essential processing and control services—then compare candidates using repeated measurements from networks your audience actually uses. For an India-centered audience, Akamai identifies Chennai and Mumbai as core sites optimized for India; Singapore or Sydney may suit workloads serving wider Asia-Pacific or communicating with core sites outside India. Those are geographic recommendations, not a universal ranking for YouTube streams.
How to choose a region for your stream
A region affects the network path between your cloud workload and the services or people it must reach. Viewer location matters, but so do the stream’s origin, any media processing or storage, and control services. Proximity can help connection speed, but the shortest geographic distance does not guarantee the best route or performance. Akamai recommends evaluating candidate locations against the workload and testing from relevant locations and networks. Akamai’s data-center selection guide cautions that congestion, connection speeds, and throughput vary, so one reading should not be treated as decisive.
Build a shortlist around your audience and workload
- Map viewers: Identify the countries or cities that account for the largest share of your likely audience. A globally distributed audience may not have one region that is close to everyone.
- Locate the workload: Include where your encoder sends its output and where processing, storage, and control services run. If the stream is processed in the cloud, the path to those services can matter as much as viewer proximity.
- Separate the components: Media storage and transcoding can require substantial compute and storage, while latency-sensitive services may benefit from being nearer to users. Akamai characterizes core sites as suitable for media storage and transcoding and distributed sites as aimed at latency-sensitive services. That does not mean every stream should put every component at the edge.
- Check service and plan availability: Confirm that the required compute plan, storage, and other services are offered in each candidate location. Availability and pricing can vary by region.
Which regions are worth considering?
| Audience or workload | Region candidates | How to interpret the recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Primarily India | Chennai or Mumbai core site | Akamai describes both as optimized for the India market. Compare them using measurements from the networks and locations relevant to your viewers. |
| Wider Asia-Pacific, or communication with Akamai core sites outside India | Singapore or Sydney | Akamai’s guide recommends these for the stated geography and connectivity needs; this is not a YouTube-specific performance ranking. |
| Other audience distributions | Eligible core regions near the largest viewer concentration or critical services | The available evidence does not establish a winning region for other audience maps. Shortlist eligible locations and measure them. |
| Latency-sensitive work near viewers | A suitable distributed compute site, if eligible | Consider only after confirming access, required core-region deployment, Dedicated CPU availability, and compatibility with the limited service set. |
Use Akamai’s data-center guide for its region-selection guidance and its region inventory to verify current locations and capabilities. These details can change, so confirm availability before committing to an architecture.
Measure candidates instead of trusting a single ping
- Choose representative test points. Test from locations and networks that reflect your audience and the systems your stream must communicate with. A test from your own office or home may not represent viewers elsewhere.
- Measure every candidate more than once. Akamai recommends testing several times, averaging three or five readings, and repeating measurements on weekdays and weekends. A lone result can reflect temporary network conditions.
- Compare more than latency. Assess measured latency and throughput alongside the availability of the required plans and services, operational status, price, and your recovery design.
- Recheck before deployment. Region status, service availability, pricing, and contractual terms are subject to change. Verify current information through Akamai’s official region and service documentation.
No measurements for your audience or workload are established here, so a numerical winner would be misleading. The right choice is the eligible region that performs acceptably in repeated, relevant tests and supports the services your architecture needs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Consider distributed compute only when its constraints fit
Akamai lists live streaming as a potential distributed-region use case, but this is not a drop-in replacement for a core region. Distributed regions are in limited availability, require an existing deployment to one or more core regions, support only a subset of cloud services, and require a Dedicated CPU plan. Check current eligibility and confirm that every service your workflow depends on is supported before designing around a distributed site. See Akamai’s distributed compute regions guide for the constraints.
Plan for a data-center outage
Akamai says each region corresponds to one physical data center and does not provide built-in multi-site high availability. A region choice alone therefore does not make a 24/7 workload resilient. Decide how you will detect a failure, restore service, and move to a tested secondary-region setup if needed. Check that the secondary location offers the plans and services your recovery procedure requires.

Akamai’s Compute Service Level Addendum version 1.2, updated February 20, 2026 and effective February 27, 2026, states 99.99% monthly uptime for covered services in general availability and 99% for covered instances in limited availability. These figures apply only to covered services and are subject to exemptions and agreement terms; they are not an end-to-end guarantee that a YouTube livestream will remain live. Verify that the specific instance and service fall into the relevant category and review the exclusions in the Compute Service Level Addendum. Availability design, YouTube’s service, and the rest of your stream path remain separate considerations.
