You can run a continuous Tamil devotional music stream on YouTube with an existing computer and a free encoder such as OBS Studio, but the music must be cleared for streaming and the setup needs reliable power, internet, and monitoring. YouTube does not guarantee that a single broadcast will stay live indefinitely, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. For a first stream, verify your channel, test the full setup, and plan for interruptions and recording backups.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enable live streaming ahead of time; YouTube’s music guidance says to enable and verify at least 24 hours before your first planned stream.
- A computer running an encoder. OBS Studio is a free, open-source option. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required, so start with a computer you already own rather than buying a dedicated machine before testing.
- A stable internet connection and dependable power. The computer and encoder must stay running for a PC-based broadcast, and someone should be able to check the stream and respond if it fails.
- Music, artwork, and other visuals that you own or have permission to use in a YouTube live stream.
- A plan for local recording and for what to do if the broadcast disconnects or approaches 12 hours.
YouTube’s own audience figure says more than 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025; that figure covers live content generally, not Tamil devotional streams in particular. YouTube for Artists
Choose a low-cost operating setup
| Approach | Upfront cost | Ongoing considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use an existing computer with OBS Studio | Potentially no new hardware purchase; OBS is free and open source. | The computer must stay powered on and connected. You need to monitor it, preserve local recording space, and recover after power, internet, or encoder problems. | Creators who already have a suitable computer and can keep it running. |
| Use a dedicated computer for the encoder | Requires a separate computer; no specific minimum specification or price is established by YouTube’s guidance cited here. | It still needs power, internet, monitoring, recording capacity, and a recovery plan. A dedicated device does not remove service or connectivity risks. | Creators who want the streaming setup separate from their everyday computer. |
For either approach, test the stream before committing to continuous operation. A dedicated mini PC is optional, not a stated YouTube requirement. Your actual costs depend on equipment you already own, electricity, internet service, and any licensing arrangements; there is no universal lowest-cost configuration.
Clear the music rights before building the playlist
Tamil devotional lyrics, a religious purpose, or an old song do not by themselves make a particular recording free to broadcast. Rights can involve the recording, composition, performers, label, publisher, and other participants. Use recordings you created and control, or obtain permission that specifically covers the intended YouTube live-stream use and relevant territories.

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube Livestream terms and conditions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder warning, interruption, or termination if the material remains; a stream can also be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If you have a license for third-party tracks, ask the rights owner or distributor whether they must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that a license alone may not prevent a live interruption when the channel is not allowlisted. Coordinate in advance rather than assuming a claim can be resolved during the broadcast. Set up and test the stream with OBS
- Enable live access. In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup and complete channel verification if prompted. Confirm the channel has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. For a first planned music stream, follow YouTube for Artists’ advice to enable and verify at least 24 hours beforehand.
- Create a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow. Copy the stream key from the live setup into OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, send it to viewers, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Build the scene and playlist. Add only cleared audio and visuals. Keep the visual scene simple and make sure it does not contain artwork or other material you are not authorized to broadcast. Arrange the tracks in the sequence you intend to repeat, and check transitions and playback levels before going live.
- Set the stream output. Choose an output that your computer and internet connection can sustain consistently. YouTube’s guidance cited here does not establish one bitrate, resolution, or encoder setting as a universal requirement for this use; use the current recommendations shown in your Live Control Room rather than guessing. Avoid making quality choices that cause dropped frames or unstable transmission.
- Record locally. Configure a local recording if your computer has enough storage, and confirm that the recording actually starts. A local file is a separate backup; it does not guarantee that YouTube will archive the live broadcast.
- Run a test broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring streams. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, inspect the Live Control Room preview, check the audio and visual output, and verify that an intended viewer can access the stream with the chosen visibility setting.
- Start and monitor. Start the encoder and confirm the Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream before you announce the link. Keep an eye on connection status, audio playback, and the live player; arrange someone to check it if you cannot monitor the setup yourself.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is archive guidance, not a promise that every shorter stream will be available as a complete replay. YouTube recommends making a local archive backup. YouTube Help: archive live streams
A broadcast that runs continuously for a day or more cannot rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the whole session. Decide how you will preserve the intended content, such as by maintaining local recordings and planning manageable broadcast sessions. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular restart schedule, and any session changes should be tested so they do not create avoidable gaps.

What to expect from monetization
Rights clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use a track does not by itself make a stream eligible to earn revenue. YouTube monetization policies also apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content,” so continuous playback of a repeated playlist does not establish monetization eligibility. Review the current policy for your channel and format before relying on revenue. YouTube channel monetization policies
Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that channel verification and live access are complete, and that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If you are planning a first music stream, allow the advance setup time recommended by YouTube for Artists.
- YouTube shows no incoming encoder signal: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube event, the correct stream key is entered under Settings > Stream, and the encoder is actively streaming. If the key was exposed or reset, update OBS with the current one.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Check internet connectivity, computer power, and whether the computer can sustain the chosen output. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream; restart the encoder or event as appropriate and verify the preview before telling viewers it is back.
- Audio or visuals are missing: Check the OBS scene sources, playlist playback, audio levels, and the Live Control Room preview. A successful encoder connection does not prove that the intended program is audible or visible.
- A copyright warning interrupts playback: Stop or remove the matched material and resolve rights with the relevant owner. For licensed tracks, confirm whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting; do not assume that possessing a license automatically prevents automated interruption.
- The full broadcast is not available as a replay: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use the local recording backup and preserve future sessions in a way that fits the archive guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube-only stream made from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a home computer running. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or pricing, then start the free first day.
