How to Set GOP Length and Keyframe Interval for Pre-Recorded YouTube Live

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval for live streams. Learn the frame-count conversion, encoder checks, protocol differences and common GOP warnings.

Set the outgoing YouTube Live encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the encoder asks for GOP length in frames, use frame rate × interval: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps for a two-second GOP. These frame counts are conversions of YouTube’s interval guidance, not separate recommendations.

What GOP length and keyframe interval mean

A GOP (group of pictures) is a sequence of video frames organized around keyframes. The keyframe interval is the time between keyframes; GOP size may instead be expressed as a number of frames. YouTube’s live encoder guidance calls this “keyframe frequency” and recommends 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. YouTube Help: live encoder settings

For pre-recorded video sent as a live stream, configure the cadence of the outgoing live stream. The GOP in the source file alone does not establish what YouTube receives: a playback and encoder path may re-encode or pass through video, and behavior depends on the software and setup. The cited platform guidance does not specify every application’s handling, so verify your actual output.

Set the interval in your encoder

  1. Find the setting for the stream output. In OBS or another encoder, look for Keyframe Interval, Keyframe Frequency or GOP Size in the encoder or streaming-output settings. Be sure you are changing the output sent to YouTube Live, not merely a recording preset.
  2. Enter 2 seconds. If the field accepts seconds, enter 2. Do not set an interval greater than 4 seconds. If it accepts frames, calculate the value from the outgoing frame rate:
    • 30 fps × 2 seconds = 60 frames.
    • 60 fps × 2 seconds = 120 frames.
  3. Check the outgoing resolution and frame rate. YouTube Live Control Room normally detects them automatically. YouTube says manual selection is available when using a custom stream key with manual settings enabled. Match your encoder output to the stream setup you intend to send.
  4. Test the real playback path. Run a test using representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. This checks what reaches YouTube rather than assuming the source file’s GOP is preserved.
  5. Match primary and backup feeds. If you send both, configure matching keyframe frequencies. YouTube’s Live Streaming API identifies a GOP mismatch as a configuration issue.

OBS’s recording-settings guide lists a keyframe interval of 2 among baseline presets for NVENC, x264, AMD and Quicksync, but that guide is specifically about recording output. Use it as evidence that OBS has this control, not as a substitute for checking the streaming encoder settings and YouTube’s stream health. The OBS guide was published on 2023-11-30. RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube’s general live-encoder table covers RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 2-second keyframes, no more than 4 seconds, and constant bitrate (CBR). It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio; RTMPS is the recommended secure RTMP option. YouTube Help: live encoder settings

Choose bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are actually sending, rather than copying a value from another profile. For reference, YouTube Help’s current page, accessed in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps (5 Mbps minimum), and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at that profile (4 Mbps minimum). At 1080p/60 fps, it recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 (6 Mbps minimum) and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (4 Mbps minimum). These are platform bitrate recommendations, not guaranteed performance results. HLS

HLS has additional packaging requirements; do not apply them to an RTMP workflow. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires closed GOPs, muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and segments generally 1–4 seconds long, with a 5-second maximum. Segment duration and keyframe interval are related but distinct settings. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency. YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion requirements

Troubleshoot GOP and keyframe warnings

  • YouTube reports an interval that is too long: confirm the streaming output’s keyframe setting is 2 seconds (and no more than 4). If the field is in frames, recalculate using the actual output frame rate.
  • The detected GOP size looks wrong or inconsistent: inspect the encoder output and test again. YouTube’s API warns that ingestion problems can make its detected GOP size inaccurate, so a warning may reflect stream delivery issues as well as the configured interval.
  • Primary and backup feeds produce a GOP mismatch: set the same keyframe frequency on both outputs.
  • You are unsure whether the source GOP reaches YouTube: check whether the playback/encoding path re-encodes or passes through the file, then validate with a test stream and YouTube’s health diagnostics. Do not infer the outgoing cadence from the source file alone.
  • You use HLS: check closed GOP support and the HLS packaging requirements separately from the interval. A correct keyframe interval does not by itself confirm compliant segment duration, container, video codec or audio codec.

YouTube documents GOP-related diagnostics in its Live Streaming API error reference and stream health documentation.
