Short answer: Hetzner Cloud moves the encoder out of your home, avoiding dependence on your household PC, power and internet connection. A home PC can make sense if it already handles the encoding and you can keep it powered, cooled and connected. Neither is automatically cheaper or guaranteed to keep a stream live: compare your actual home costs with the selected Hetzner server, region and outgoing-traffic charges, and plan for recovery and archiving either way.
What changes when you move the encoder to Hetzner Cloud?
Hetzner Cloud servers are virtual machines running on physical servers. Hetzner offers shared-resource and dedicated-resource server types, with dedicated CPU resources described as suited to CPU-intensive workloads. Its Cloud locations include Europe, the USA and Singapore; a Primary IP is needed for a public network interface. These details make a cloud VM a possible place to run an encoder, not proof that a particular VM can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. The documentation does not establish a minimum server configuration for a specific live-encoding workload. Check CPU and memory needs against your encoder settings before committing. A home PC keeps encoding in your household. Its continuity depends on the computer, its cooling, power, internet service and your ability to monitor or restart it. A cloud VM removes those household dependencies from the encoder, but introduces dependence on the VM, provider network, your server configuration and YouTube’s ingest path. It does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream from encoder to viewers.
Availability: what Hetzner’s 99.9% figure means
Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure monthly availability of 99.9% for each individual Cloud Server, measured during a calendar month. The commitment has exclusions, including customer software or configuration failures and some network interruptions outside Hetzner’s reasonable control. It is an availability effort for the VM, not an end-to-end uptime guarantee for your encoder, YouTube and viewers. Read the Cloud and vServer Service Agreement for its scope and exclusions.

No comparable universal uptime figure is established for a home PC. Its reliability depends on your specific equipment, power, cooling, internet service, monitoring and recovery setup. For either setup, a single machine can fail; if outages have a high cost for your channel, consider a tested backup or failover arrangement. Compare the real cost, not just the server price
There is no defensible universal break-even figure: cloud pricing and included traffic depend on server type and region, while home electricity and connectivity costs vary by household. Build a monthly estimate from the inputs below. Hetzner announced updated Cloud server pricing for new orders and rescales starting 15 June 2026; existing servers are unaffected unless rescaled, so check the current quote for your specific plan and location. As one specific traffic example, Hetzner lists 20 TB included for CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations on its traffic page, last changed 21 May 2024. Allowances differ by product and location, including in the US and Singapore; this is not a universal quota for every Cloud server. Confirm the current allowance for your chosen type and region.
A practical way to estimate both sides
- For home: measure the PC’s power draw during the intended encoding workload; multiply its average kilowatts by the hours it will run, then by your local per-kWh tariff. Add any incremental internet, cooling, backup-power and maintenance costs.
- For Hetzner: price the exact server type and region, include any required IP, and estimate outgoing traffic against that location’s included amount. Include the cost of keeping the resource allocated for the period: stopping the server does not stop billing while the resource exists.
- Compare like periods: use the same number of days or months and include one-time hardware costs or setup effort only if they matter to your decision. Recheck the quote and traffic allowance before ordering.
How much bandwidth does a continuous stream use?
Outgoing traffic depends principally on the encoded bitrate and how long the encoder sends video. A useful estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 = megabytes sent, before accounting for protocol overhead and unit conversions. For a rough decimal estimate, a constant 6 Mbps stream sends about 2.7 GB per hour (6 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000), or about 64.8 GB over 24 hours. This is an illustrative calculation, not a YouTube or Hetzner allowance. At higher bitrates, daily transfer rises proportionally. Compare the estimate with the uplink capacity or data cap at home, or Hetzner’s included outgoing traffic for your selected region and server type.

Set up the encoder for YouTube ingest
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS. It lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec, so use YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve the stream URL and stream key using YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions: Set up your YouTube live stream.
- Choose a video format: select a codec supported by YouTube and your encoder. Set resolution and frame rate to match the source and your encoding capacity; consult YouTube’s bitrate table for that exact combination.
- Set the rate control and keyframes: use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds, as YouTube recommends.
- Use RTMPS where supported: enter YouTube’s ingest URL and the stream key in the encoder’s streaming configuration.
- Test before relying on it: check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s live preview or status, then verify the stream after any changes to the VM, encoder, resolution or bitrate.
Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it in screenshots, logs or example configurations. If exposed, replace it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Archiving is a separate problem for 24/7 channels
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive limitation, not a blanket prohibition on continuous live streaming. If you need a complete record, arrange a separate recording and storage plan rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive. A local recording uses home storage and resources; recording on a cloud server requires its own storage and transfer planning. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Running a stream continuously does not change YouTube’s content rules. Live content must comply with Community Guidelines, and you need the necessary rights for what you broadcast. This is especially important for channels built around music, third-party footage or other licensed material. Common problems and fixes
- The VM is running, but YouTube is not receiving a stream: check that the encoder process is running, the RTMPS URL and key are current, and the encoder output matches YouTube’s supported settings. Confirm connectivity from the server and check YouTube Studio’s stream status.
- The stream drops when the server is stopped: Hetzner bills while the resource exists, but a powered-off server cannot run your encoder. Keep the VM running for continuous service; stopping it is not a substitute for deleting it or reducing its allocation.
- Unexpected cloud traffic charges or exhaustion: estimate transfer from bitrate and duration, then check the selected server’s region-specific included traffic and outgoing-traffic terms. Do not assume the EU allowance applies in the US or Singapore.
- Video stutters or the VM is overloaded: compare CPU and memory use with the encoder’s workload. Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate only in line with YouTube’s guidance, or choose a server that can handle the target encode; Hetzner’s documentation does not certify a particular plan for a given resolution.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: if the stream ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not capture it at all. Use a separate recording plan for content that must be preserved.
- The stream stops during a power or internet outage at home: a cloud VM avoids those household dependencies, but it does not prevent provider, configuration or YouTube-side interruption. For either setup, test monitoring and recovery before depending on it.
