To keep a Windows PC awake during a YouTube Live stream, set its sleep timeout for the power state it will use. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and change Make my device sleep after. Set the screen timeout separately if you need the display to stay lit. The steps are the same for Indian and other Windows PCs; labels and available options can vary by Windows version, hardware, and manufacturer.
Set the sleep timeout for your stream
Windows has separate controls for turning off the display and putting the computer to sleep. A dark screen does not necessarily mean the PC has slept: you can let the display switch off while Windows continues running the stream.
Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the power condition the PC will use, set Make my device sleep after to a period longer than the planned stream. For a stream with no predictable end time, select Never for that condition if the option is available.
- Adjust Turn my screen off after separately if you need the display to remain visible. Otherwise, it can turn off while the PC stays awake.
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep and change the sleep timing for the applicable battery or plugged-in state. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft; that date does not mean every Windows 10 PC instantly stopped working, but the system is no longer supported.
Choose the setting for the PC’s actual power state
Laptops commonly have distinct timeout choices for On battery and When plugged in. Change the column that matches how you will run the stream. If you switch from battery to AC power—or the other way around—check that state’s setting too.

A long stream can use more power when the PC is kept awake. For a stream that must last longer than the laptop’s available battery runtime, running on power is more practical, but still verify the plugged-in sleep timeout. Microsoft also documents battery saver, power mode, and video playback options; none should be treated as a substitute for setting the correct sleep behavior.
Check what happens when you close a laptop lid
A laptop may sleep when its lid closes, regardless of the timeout you changed. To review the action, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. Check When I close the lid, including its Plugged in choice if shown. You can also review the power-button action on that page. Available choices depend on the device.

Before closing the lid during a stream, confirm that the selected lid action will not put the PC to sleep. If you need to watch the stream on an external display, make sure that display and the rest of the setup are ready first.
Use PowerToys Awake for a temporary override
Microsoft PowerToys Awake can keep a signed-in Windows session awake temporarily or indefinitely without changing the normal power plan. It is useful when you want a stream-specific override rather than a persistent timeout change. Enable Awake through its PowerToys settings or system-tray controls, then choose a duration appropriate to the stream; Microsoft also documents a standalone executable.

In its default behavior, Awake allows connected displays to turn off, so it can keep the PC awake without keeping the monitor lit. It requires an enabled, signed-in session: it does not work at the lock screen and does not prevent you from manually selecting sleep or hibernate. If the PC still sleeps, check that Awake is enabled and that you are signed in.

What YouTube Live and its sleep timer do—and do not do
Do not rely on a browser playing YouTube Live to keep every Windows device awake. Device, browser, and software behavior can vary, and the official Windows and YouTube documentation does not guarantee that browser playback prevents sleep. Configure Windows directly for the power state and stream duration you need.

Windows video playback options are not established as browser YouTube sleep-prevention controls: Microsoft describes them for apps using the built-in Windows video platform. YouTube’s desktop sleep timer has a different purpose: YouTube Help says it pauses a video after a chosen interval. It is not a Windows setting that keeps a PC awake.

- The screen turns off, but the stream continues: This may be normal. The screen timeout and sleep timeout are separate. Change the screen timeout only if you need the display visible.
- The PC sleeps after switching power sources: Set the sleep timeout in the column for the power state now in use.
- The laptop sleeps when you close it: Review Choose what closing the lid does and the relevant battery or plugged-in action.
- PowerToys Awake does not keep the PC awake: Confirm that Awake is enabled and that the session is signed in; it does not work at the lock screen or override manual sleep or hibernate.
- You expected YouTube playback to prevent sleep: Playback is not a guaranteed wake mechanism. Use the Windows timeout or Awake instead.
