If an FFmpeg playlist skips gaming VODs, first confirm what kind of playlist FFmpeg is reading. For a concat-demuxer playlist, check the affected files’ streams, codecs, time bases, durations, and paths. A bad duration can shift timestamps; incompatible streams can make stream-copy concatenation fail. The exact fix depends on the command, playlist, transition logs, and media metadata.
First identify the playlist format
Concat-demuxer input is a text file listing media files and optional directives. An HLS playlist is typically an M3U8 manifest and follows a different path. Confirm which input your command uses before applying concat-demuxer options; a remedy for one format may not apply to the other.
For a concat script, inspect the file order, paths, and directives. FFmpeg documents the optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker for automatic format recognition: it must be the first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Diagnose the files around the skip
- Save the exact command and playlist. Remove any YouTube stream key or other private ingest credential before sharing them.
- Find the first affected transition. Note the VOD that fails to start or jumps, then capture FFmpeg’s log around the end of the preceding file and the start of the next.
- Probe the affected files and compare them. Check stream count and order, codecs, time bases, durations, and whether audio and video end at different times. Compare a skipped VOD with a file that plays correctly.
- Read the error before changing options. A path rejection, timestamp jump, and incompatible stream layout point to different causes.
Fix the cause that matches the evidence
Incompatible streams, codecs, or time bases
The concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Compare the probed stream layouts—not just the filenames or container extensions. Differences in stream count, stream order, codec, or time base can make stream-copy concatenation unsuitable.

If the files are not compatible for stream copy, normalize them to a consistent layout or use a filtering and re-encoding workflow. Incorrect duration or timestamp placement
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next file’s timestamps. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration—for example, one inferred from bitrate or associated with a truncated file—can produce artifacts. Check whether the VOD is complete and whether its reported duration is credible.

A duration directive can override the stored duration, but only use a measured or otherwise defensible value. Guessing can move the transition rather than fix it. The concat documentation explains duration directives and timestamp adjustment.
Audio and video end at different times
Check the end times of both streams in the affected file. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally, and streams that do not have exactly the same length may produce gaps. Determine whether the apparent skip is actually a gap caused by one stream ending earlier.

Path rejected by safety checks
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. If the log reports an unsafe filename or directive, inspect the playlist paths and the option in use. Setting -safe 0 permits any filename, but relax that restriction only when the playlist contents are trusted. See FFmpeg’s documentation for the concat demuxer’s safe option.
Choose the concatenation approach

These are workflow distinctions, not a diagnosis of a particular set of VODs. Without the command, playlist, transition logs, and file metadata, the cause of a specific skip cannot be established.
