To run an ambient music radio station on YouTube, combine a looping playlist and a visual scene in an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that live audio-and-video feed to YouTube. The playlist does not start a broadcast by itself: you still need live access on your channel, a configured encoder, and music rights that cover the way you plan to use the recordings.
Before you build the stream
Enable live streaming
If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube for Artists advises verifying the account at least 24 hours before you plan to go live. Confirm that live streaming is available in the current YouTube Studio interface before preparing a public launch. YouTube for Artists’ live-streaming guidance also explains that an encoder offers more customization and control than a mobile or webcam stream.
Clear the music rights
Make sure you are authorized to use both the composition and the specific sound recording in a YouTube livestream. Confirm that the permission covers your intended territories, monetization, and any replay or archive you plan to keep. Keep the agreement or other documentation that records those permissions.
“Royalty-free” or licensed music is not automatically safe from a live interruption. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If a track is managed through Content ID, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its allowlist; coordinate with the label or distributor when appropriate. YouTube warns that a detected match can lead to a warning, a replaced stream image, an interruption, or termination if the identified content remains. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Make a looping playlist in OBS
OBS Studio can play either a playlist or a single media file as a scene source. Use the playlist option if you want to change tracks individually; use a single long file if you have already assembled the whole program into one recording. These are workflow choices, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation.
Option A: Loop a playlist with VLC Video source
- Prepare the tracks. Put the authorized recordings you want to use in a playlist. Check that the files play in the VLC environment available to OBS and that the transitions sound the way you intend.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry your radio station’s visual presentation.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video Source. Configure its media playlist with the tracks you prepared.
- Check looping. OBS documents a Loop Playlist property for the VLC Video source, enabled by default. Confirm that it is on so playback returns to the beginning after the final item.
- Add the visual scene. Add a still image, animation, or other visual you have permission to use, and arrange it in the scene. Check the preview to make sure the visual is visible while the playlist audio plays.
Option B: Loop one local file with Media Source
- Prepare one media file. Combine the ambient program into a single local audio or video file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the audio formats supported by Media Source; check the selected source and your installed environment for compatibility.
- Add a Media Source. In the OBS scene’s Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Choose the local file.
- Enable Loop. Turn on the source’s Loop property so the file starts again when playback ends. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the loop setting for a single file.
- Build and preview the scene. Add or position the visual element, then check the scene and listen through the start, end, and repeat of the file.
For the precise source properties and current OBS behavior, see the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022). Playlist format support can depend on the selected source and installed VLC environment, so verify your actual files rather than assuming every format will work.

Connect OBS to a YouTube live broadcast
- Start YouTube Studio’s live workflow. Create a live broadcast in the current Studio interface and select the encoder workflow. Follow the prompts to connect your encoder to the broadcast.
- Connect the stream key privately. Use the stream key and connection details provided by YouTube in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or stream scene.
- Check the encoder preview and status. Confirm that YouTube receives the scene and audio from OBS before you make the broadcast public. Follow the current Studio and OBS prompts if the encoder is not connecting.
- Choose visibility deliberately. Start with an unlisted broadcast for testing. Switch to public only when the complete setup is ready and the rights arrangements are in place.
YouTube’s API documentation explicitly includes a 24/7 feed as a broadcast use case. That describes a supported model; it does not promise continuous uptime or guarantee that your account, encoder, computer, or network will remain available. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams was updated September 14, 2026 UTC. Its separate HLS ingestion guide is protocol guidance for encoder vendors, not a setup requirement for an ordinary OBS user.
Test privately, then launch
YouTube for Artists’ guidance is direct: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” Run the whole chain—not just local playback—before announcing a public station.

- Check the broadcast status and your network connection during the test.
- Look for copyright or other Studio alerts before switching visibility to public.
YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is platform-wide context, not a forecast of audience size for an ambient music channel.
Plan for copyright claims and the archive
YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party matches, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A match can affect the live picture or stop the stream, so monitor Studio rather than assuming that a successful start means the broadcast will continue unaffected.

Decide in advance whether to keep an archive of the broadcast. YouTube says claims on an archived live stream may be made after the stream finishes. If you retain a replay, check it for claims after completion and make sure your music permission covers that replay as well as the live use.

| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Music source | Original or commissioned music: establish that you control or have the necessary rights to both the composition and recording. | Third-party recordings: confirm the license covers livestreaming, intended territories, monetization, and archive use as applicable; arrange Content ID allowlisting where relevant. |
| Loop input | One local file with Media Source’s Loop setting: fewer playlist items to manage. | A VLC Video source playlist with Loop Playlist: easier to revise track-by-track. |
| Replay | Do not retain an archive if you do not need one, subject to the options available for your broadcast. | Keep an archive if useful, then review it for post-completion Content ID claims and ensure the rights cover replay. |
| Production | A simple OBS scene and encoder setup can present a visual alongside the playlist. | A more customized encoder scene offers additional production control; YouTube for Artists describes encoder streaming as more customizable than mobile or webcam streaming. |
The official guidance cited here does not establish a minimum computer specification or a need to buy particular hardware. Your local setup does, however, depend on the encoder and network remaining available while you operate it.

Troubleshoot common problems
You cannot start a live broadcast
- Likely cause: Live streaming has not been enabled or verified for the channel, or activation has not had enough time to take effect.
- What to do: Confirm live access in YouTube Studio. For a first stream, YouTube for Artists advises verifying the account at least 24 hours ahead.
The playlist does not play or repeat
- Likely cause: A file is unsupported in the selected source or VLC environment, the source is misconfigured, or its loop property is off.
- What to do: Test the files in the source you chose, check the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist property or Media Source’s Loop property, and let an unlisted test reach the end of the playlist.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Likely cause: The broadcast has not been created in Studio, the encoder is not connected using the current stream details, or the local connection is unavailable.
- What to do: Recheck the Studio broadcast and OBS connection prompts, keep the stream key private, and verify the received feed in an unlisted test before launch.
The stream is interrupted or shows a copyright warning
- Likely cause: YouTube has detected third-party content, or the channel has not been allowlisted for a Content ID-managed recording.
- What to do: Check Studio for the alert, contact the rights owner or relevant label or distributor about channel allowlisting, and use only music whose permissions cover the planned live and replay uses.
