To rerun an existing gaming VOD as a YouTube Live stream, use OBS if you want to send the video from a computer you can keep running; use a cloud service if you want the stream to run from hosted infrastructure instead. In either case, schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect it with a private stream key, and rebroadcast only content you have rights to use. OBS does need to stay open—and its computer and network connection need to stay available—for a local rerun to continue.
Choose OBS or a cloud service
| Consideration | OBS on your computer | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stream runs | OBS encodes and sends the VOD from your computer. That computer and its network connection must remain available during the broadcast. | The service sends the prerecorded stream from hosted infrastructure, so a dedicated local streaming PC is not needed. This shifts the workload; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. |
| Control and scheduling | YouTube Studio supports scheduled encoder streams and reusable stream settings. You control the local OBS scene and when to start it. | Scheduling and automation vary by provider. Check its current features and limits directly before choosing. |
| Cost and limits | OBS is described by YouTube as open-source software available at no charge; account for the computer’s power use and the connection you keep active. | Compare current plan cost, supported video quality and duration, storage, and scheduling restrictions. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded streams, but its directory does not establish current pricing or plan limits. |
| Viewer rewind | YouTube’s DVR setting can let viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. DVR may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. | |
| Rights and monetization | The method does not change your responsibility to have rights to the game footage and audio or to meet YouTube’s policies. Neither workflow guarantees reach, watch time, monetization, or reliability. | |
YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes OBS as open-source streaming software and identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. These listings establish category fit, not an endorsement or current commercial terms.
What to prepare before the rerun
- Enable live streaming: If this is your first time streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than planning the first broadcast for the same day.
- Check the VOD: Confirm that you control the footage or have permission for both live and archived use. Review the full recording for licensed music, overlays, alerts, or other material that could trigger a rights claim.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a stream’s password and address. Do not publish or share it. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Decide whether viewers need DVR: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live, but YouTube says it may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
How to rerun a gaming VOD with OBS
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create an encoder stream or schedule one for the intended start time. Set the title, audience and other event details, then select the stream settings you need. YouTube allows scheduled streams and reuse of settings; verify the selected event before broadcasting.
- Copy the event’s stream key. In the scheduled stream’s stream settings, copy its stream key. Treat it as a credential. Avoid pasting it into public chats, screenshots, or shared notes.
- Configure OBS to send to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or use the stream-key option shown in your OBS version. If entering a key, paste the key for the correct scheduled event. OBS labels can vary by version, so check that the service and key correspond to the event you created.
- Add the VOD as a media source. In the OBS scene you will use, select Sources > + > Media Source, choose the authorized video file, and enable looping if you want playback to repeat. Check the preview for the right aspect ratio, audio, and any unwanted black frames before going live.
- Check output and connection. Use a resolution and frame rate the source and computer can sustain, and confirm that OBS is not dropping frames during a private or unlisted test if practical. The VOD’s source quality does not guarantee the outgoing stream will have the same quality; encoding and upload capacity matter.
- Confirm event controls in YouTube Studio. Check the scheduled event’s auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR settings. YouTube documents these controls, but do not assume they are enabled or configured as intended on a particular event.
- Start the encoder at the scheduled time. Start streaming in OBS, then check Live Control Room for the incoming feed and start status. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network connection running for as long as the local stream needs to continue.
- End and review the archive. Stop the stream from OBS or use the event’s configured controls, then check the resulting YouTube archive and its audio. Archive availability depends on YouTube processing and your settings.

Rights, YouTube rules, and monetization
Confirm game and music permissions
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including applicable music rights. Its game-content guidance says monetization depends on the commercial-use permissions granted by the publisher. Check the publisher’s current streaming policy and review the VOD for music or other material you are not authorized to rebroadcast.
A rerun does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and describes repetitive or mass-produced material lacking materially varied creative, educational, or other value as ineligible. That does not establish that every VOD rerun is automatically ineligible; assessment may depend on the channel and content. Do not assume a rebroadcast will qualify for monetization.

Troubleshoot a VOD rerun
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is streaming, the correct event and stream key are selected, and Live Control Room is open to that event. If the key may be compromised or the wrong key was used, reset or copy the correct key and update OBS.
- The stream stops when you leave: With OBS, the encoder runs locally, so the computer, OBS, and network must stay available. If you cannot keep them available, use a cloud-hosted workflow instead.
- The stream starts at the wrong time or ends unexpectedly: Check the scheduled event’s start time and confirm its auto-start and auto-stop settings. Do not rely on settings from a different event.
- Playback has no sound or the wrong scene: Check the media source’s file path and OBS audio meters, then inspect the outgoing preview. Reopen the source if the file was moved or renamed.
- Viewers cannot rewind: Check whether DVR is enabled. For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check YouTube’s processing status and the event’s archive settings. Availability after the live event is not guaranteed solely by enabling DVR.
- A claim or monetization issue appears: Review the specific affected segment, music, and publisher permissions. Changing from OBS to cloud streaming does not change the rights in the video.
