How to Use a Raspberry Pi to Loop Gaming VODs on YouTube Live

A Raspberry Pi can play a gaming VOD in a loop and send it to YouTube Live, but the right settings depend on the model and software. Here’s how to configure and test the workflow safely.

You can use a Raspberry Pi to play a gaming VOD repeatedly into an encoder and send it to YouTube Live, but the exact setup depends on the Pi model, operating system, and software. YouTube’s documented workflow uses a stream URL and key; its encoder guidance sets the output requirements. The official sources available here do not establish one tested, universal Pi model, application, or loop command, so validate your chosen setup with a test stream before relying on it.

What the Raspberry Pi does—and what it does not

A looping live stream has two separate jobs: playing the local video repeatedly, and encoding and sending that playback to YouTube. A Pi may handle both jobs, but its ability to decode a video does not prove it can encode and stream the same video at the intended resolution and frame rate. Capacity depends on the model and encoding path.

Raspberry Pi 5 includes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. That is a decoding specification, not evidence of a hardware video encoder at the same quality. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 note describes software libx264 configurations for Pi 5 and a hardware-encoding configuration for Pi 4. Treat those as distinct paths, and test the actual board and settings you plan to use.

The defensible workflow is to use a video you have rights to stream, configure compatible playback and encoder software, connect that encoder to YouTube with its stream URL and key, and verify the preview and stream health before making it public.

Check your channel and prepare the VOD

Make sure YouTube Live is available

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Confirm access before configuring the Pi.

Use a file you are allowed to livestream

Check the rights for the gameplay, music, overlays, and any other material in the recording. Owning a recording does not necessarily mean you have permission to livestream every included work; game publishers control relevant commercial-use rights, and third-party music or other material can create separate issues.

Use a local file in a format your chosen playback software can read. Check that its audio is present and its duration and playback are suitable for the planned stream. The sources do not establish a specific media-player package or file format for a universal Pi recipe.

Connect the Pi encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and choose the ingestion protocol and stream key option that your encoder supports.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a public screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  3. Choose software compatible with your Pi and Raspberry Pi OS installation. The playback program must repeat the VOD, while the encoder must capture that playback and send it to YouTube. Confirm that the selected program supports the protocol and codec you intend to use.
  4. Configure a conservative output mode the board can sustain. Match resolution and frame rate to the encoding capacity of your specific Pi. Do not infer encoding capacity from the Pi 5’s HEVC decoder specification.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Use only a protocol and codec supported by the encoder you select.

Set bitrate and keyframes for the chosen output

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommended bitrates include these common gaming-stream targets:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube service recommendations, not a guarantee that a Raspberry Pi can encode the mode or that your internet connection can sustain its upload. Higher resolution and frame rate generally demand more from both the encoder and the connection. Start with a mode the hardware can handle, then test with representative fast motion and audio; gaming footage can expose problems that a static test image will not.

Test the loop before a public run

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test where suitable. Confirm that the encoder connects and that the stream appears in the Live Control Room.
  2. Preview the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check image, motion, audio levels, and synchronization rather than assuming that a successful connection means the output is good.
  3. Check the stream health panel and monitor the test. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring quality and testing with audio and movement comparable to the intended stream.
  4. Confirm playback on the channel or watch page. Ensure the live output is actually visible where viewers will watch it.
  5. Test the full loop and intended run conditions. Verify that playback returns to the start as expected and that the Pi, storage, network, and encoder process remain stable for the period you intend to stream.

No universal Pi loop command, tested software stack, sustained run duration, or automatic restart behavior is established here. Do not assume a setup will recover from a power loss, network interruption, full storage, or crashed process without testing and configuring recovery for the specific software you use.

Rights, copyright checks, and monetization

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects third-party material, it may replace the live output with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate the stream. Licensed content may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Check permissions before broadcasting, especially for music that is incidental to gameplay.

Permission to livestream and eligibility to monetize are separate questions. YouTube says monetization of gameplay depends on the publisher’s commercial-use rights. Its guidance says gameplay may be monetizable when commentary is strictly tied to the live action and provides instructional or educational value, while simply showing gameplay for extended periods may not be accepted.

Looping also does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and warn against highly repetitive, interchangeable content with little educational, commentary, narrative, or other viewer value. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission: a channel using somebody else’s VOD may need substantial original commentary, modification, or value, and YouTube evaluates the channel as a whole.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Next step
YouTube does not receive the stream Confirm the stream URL and key, and that the chosen protocol is supported by the encoder. Re-copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
Video stutters or the encoder struggles Check whether the Pi can encode the selected resolution and frame rate, and whether upload capacity is adequate for the configured bitrate. Test a lower output mode and compare the encoder’s stream-health feedback before raising quality again.
Audio is missing or unsuitable Inspect the VOD’s audio and the encoder’s audio input and output configuration. Preview a representative segment in Live Control Room and correct the playback or encoder routing before going public.
The stream connects but viewers cannot see expected playback Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and channel or watch-page playback. Keep the test private or unlisted while you identify whether the issue is playback, encoding, or publishing.
The stream is interrupted after starting Check for third-party-content matches and whether the Pi’s power, network, storage, playback, or encoder process failed. Resolve rights issues or test the relevant system component. Do not assume the chosen software restarts automatically.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded VOD live without leaving a Pi or another computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and the service streams to YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer can be off while the stream runs in the cloud.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Raspberry Pi need OBS to send a loop to YouTube Live?

Not necessarily. The playback and encoder software must be compatible with the Pi, its operating system, and YouTube’s ingest settings; no single software choice is established as a universal setup.

Can a Raspberry Pi 5 hardware-encode a 4K60 stream because it can decode 4K60 HEVC?

No such conclusion follows from the decoder specification. Decoding and encoding are different tasks; validate the chosen encoding path and output on the actual board.
