If a YouTube Live replay is silent after you switch videos in OBS, first find out where the sound disappears: OBS monitoring, the live stream, or only the saved replay. Those are separate outputs, and a moving Audio Mixer meter alone does not prove that sound reached YouTube.
Find out which output is silent
While the video is playing, check these three outputs separately and note the result for each:
- OBS monitoring: Can you hear the source through OBS’s selected monitoring device?
- The live stream: If the broadcast is available, does it have sound?
- The replay: Does the saved YouTube recording have sound?
A silent replay does not establish that OBS monitoring was silent, and the reverse is also true. Identifying the affected output narrows the checks to make next.
Check whether OBS is receiving the source audio
- In OBS, open the Audio Mixer while the switched-to video is playing.
- Watch the meter for the relevant audio source. If it responds, audio is reaching the OBS mixer; that does not establish that your monitoring device or YouTube output is receiving it.
- If the meter does not respond, inspect the media source and its playback behavior before changing unrelated devices or buying hardware.
OBS’s Audio Mixer guide describes the mixer and its monitoring controls. A meter is a useful first check, not a confirmation that the stream or replay contains sound.

Check what the source does when you switch videos
If the source is an OBS Media Source, inspect its activation settings. OBS documents “Restart playback when source becomes active” and “Close file when inactive.” The latter frees memory while the source is inactive, but OBS notes that reopening it can cause a brief delay when it is shown again. Confirm that playback resumes or reloads as expected after switching. These are diagnostic checks, not a proven fix for every silent replay.

If you use VLC Video Source, verify its audio setup
- Check the VLC Video Source’s selected Audio Track.
- Confirm VLC is installed. OBS says VLC Video Source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, you need 64-bit VLC.
These requirements and the track setting are described in OBS’s VLC Video Source documentation.
If the mixer moves but the output is silent
Follow the affected output rather than assuming the source itself is broken:

- Only local monitoring is silent: Check that the desired monitoring device is selected in OBS’s audio settings.
- The live stream or replay is silent: Confirm the source is routed to the audio track used for streaming. A moving mixer meter does not verify that routing.
- Only the replay is silent: Compare it with the live stream, if available, and OBS monitoring. This helps isolate whether the failure is specific to the saved replay; the symptom alone does not identify its cause.
The correct track, device, operating system, source type, and OBS version depend on your setup, so treat these as checks rather than a diagnosis.
How much weight to give an OBS 32.0.2 report
An OBS issue filed for version 32.0.2 describes a reporter who could hear VLC source audio locally and saw mixer activity while the stream had no audio. That is an individual report, not proof of a universal or currently confirmed OBS defect, and it does not establish that a silent replay after switching videos has the same cause.
