To change your Minecraft character’s appearance, use the workflow for your edition: import a PNG in the Minecraft Launcher for Java Edition, or use Dressing Room, Character Creator, or Marketplace in Bedrock Edition. A skin changes how your character looks; it does not add gameplay abilities.
First, check which Minecraft edition you use
The steps depend on your edition, not just whether you play on a computer. Java Edition uses the Launcher’s Skins tab to upload a custom PNG. Bedrock Edition starts in Dressing Room and offers character customization, Classic Skin, and Marketplace routes; custom PNG importing is not available on every Bedrock platform.
Minecraft’s “What is a Minecraft Skin?” guide, published June 5, 2023, describes the Java and Bedrock workflows. If you are unsure which version is open, check the edition named on the game’s start screen or in the Launcher before following the steps below.
How to download and install a skin in Java Edition
Java Edition’s official process uses a flat, unwrapped .png skin image. It may look like a flattened pattern rather than a picture of a person: Minecraft maps that texture onto the character model. The guide does not specify image dimensions, so use a skin file intended for Minecraft rather than assuming a particular size.

- Download the skin PNG to your computer. The official process requires an image file, not an executable installer or mod.
- Open Minecraft Launcher, choose Minecraft: Java Edition, then select the Skins tab.
- Select New Skin and enter a name.
- Choose the model that matches the skin: Classic/Wide for standard arms or Slim for narrower arms.
- Browse to the downloaded PNG and upload it.
- Select Save and Use to apply the skin to your character.
Minecraft’s guide says, “Creating a skin from scratch requires an image editor.” That applies if you want to make or edit the texture yourself; it is not required simply to import a skin PNG you already have.
How to change or create a skin in Bedrock Edition
In Bedrock, start from the game’s Dressing Room. You can assemble a character appearance from available items, choose a Classic Skin route, or get skins and character items through Marketplace. The available options vary by platform.

Build an appearance in Character Creator
- From the start screen, select Dressing Room, then Create Character.
- Choose the Character route to build an appearance from the available items, or start from a default character.
- Back out of Character Creator to save the character in Dressing Room.
Use a Classic Skin or Marketplace content
Choose the Classic Skin route in Dressing Room for that skin workflow. To get Marketplace skins or character items, open Marketplace, find the content, and download it. Minecraft says Marketplace includes free skins as well as skins users can buy.
For content you have already obtained, open Marketplace > My Library and choose Download or Equip as appropriate. Character customizations can also be found from the side menu in Dressing Room. See Minecraft Help’s Marketplace access instructions.

Can you import a custom PNG skin in Bedrock?
Do not assume a custom PNG import button is available on every Bedrock device. Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ says imports are possible on many platforms and specifically names Windows 10 and mobile, while stating that console custom imports are not planned. That is the FAQ’s published position; platform support can change, so check the options in Dressing Room on your device.
The same FAQ says Bedrock custom skins do not sync between devices and games. A skin used in one place should not be assumed to appear automatically on another platform or edition. See the Minecraft Character Creator FAQ for its platform guidance.

Troubleshoot common skin problems
- The Java character’s arms look wrong: Reopen the skin in the Launcher and check whether it is intended for Classic/Wide or Slim arms, then select the matching model.
- You cannot find PNG import in Bedrock: Confirm your exact platform. The official FAQ names Windows 10 and mobile as import contexts and says console imports are not planned; your in-game options are the best guide to current availability.
- A Marketplace item you already obtained is missing: Look in Marketplace > My Library for downloadable content, or check Dressing Room’s side menu for character items.
- You are asked to run a file to install a Java skin: That is not the official Java skin workflow described here, which uploads a PNG through the Launcher.
